Dan,
It also occurs to me that the rear end seems "soft", analogous to worn
shocks on a car with a standard suspension.  Does this possibly indicate low
pressure as you described in scenario 1?

You will get many expert answers to this -- my first two thoughts are:

1) Low pressure in the hydraulic boosters at the rear, and

2) Control arm at the rear that sets the ride height may have been
knocked out of adjustment.
