It is truly a rarity to see multiple SEC's on the road and when my friend
and I travel we never see any additional SEC's near us.
I am bound by four of the beauties and luckily can choose which to drive as
I did when we went to Las Vegas and I realized that Black with Black
interior is not a wise choice. I will be taking my White with Beige in 10
days perhaps I may not melt!

Hey fellow listers,
I was driving through beautiful downtown White Rock, BC (where I live)
Tuesday evening and saw not one, but two SEC's in less than 5min. The first
was a gorgeous black AMG with deep dish rims. I flashed the guy, but he
didn't see me because he was busy gawking at the scenery - not that I blame
him. The other was a nice silver/burgundy 560 parked a few doors down from
my apartment. It also had the deep dish AMG rims, but the rest of the car
seemed stock. I left a note on the windshield mentioning the group so
perhaps they'll check it out.
It's rare to see even one SEC on any given day, but two within the space of
5min. that was pretty cool.

The centre vents on my 1989 560SEC do not work at all, so I gear myself up
for the major strip down. I remove the glove box liner (Thank you, Dick)
and check out the two vacuum pods. They look good and seem to work. OK,
back to the centre ones. Remove the centre "venetian blinds" (Thank you,
Tom), curse lots and eventually succeed. Push aside the rubber shroud
and...nothing to be seen. No vacuum pod. The center lever under the
centre vents is not actually connected to anything. I can see a tab on the
flap that controls the airflow to the defrost vents, and I can move the flap
manually. My questions are:
1. What items are missing that connect the middle lever to the tab on the
airflow flap?
2. Where/how does the centre (missing) pod physically attach to the car.
3. Where the &$&^# are the vacuum lines that go to the missing pod?
4. Where can I get the correctly coloured vacuum lines?
5. Where can I find the moron who disassembled everything and did not put
it ALL back together?
Cheers.....Barry

Center Vents AC ProblemBarry:
The vacuum element (pod) you are looking for should be just inside the glove
box opening and up to the left. It has a single lever that attaches to a
hidden door that simply diverts airflow to either the defrost vents or to
the center vents.
Are you sure the linkages you are referring to that you accessed by removing
the center vent Venetian blinds and then lifting the rubber surround are not
for the opening and closing of the left side, right side, and center vent
doors 'at the dash' using the manual slides that sit below the center
Venetian blinds and directly above the center console switches???
I'd take another look around in side the glove box area and to the left then
up. At the very least the metal link that the pod operates will be visible.
Let us know what you find.
Dick

Hi!
I went to the salvage yard today and picked up a used
coil off a 1990 560 SEC. However, this coil is not
the cylindrical type that goes on 380 SECs. Does
anyone know if it will really matter?
I was reading the service manual and it said at the
bottom: "Never replace ignition coil by one the
ignition coils used up to now".
Well, this is really confusing because I don't know
what year the manual was made and the manual covers a
range of W126 bodies from '82 to 91+, so what the heck
kind of message is this?
coils are coils? beyond the number of windings and
the strength of the induction current, can MBZ really
have made a big change between earlier model SECs and
later models? obviously, not all coils are the same
but to simply send current to the dizzy cap, can there
really be that much of a "dangerous/damage-prone"
difference?

I do not know but I doubt if any parts are interchangeable between the 380 &
560.

Dear Figment;
HEY. YAH! I never thought of it like that. But I'll bet that, who knows,
even if you DON'T actually NEED a coil for your 380, a used one from an
eight year newer 560 would probably work even better! Sure, it might LOOK
completely different but it is likely just one of those German cosmetic
upgrades.
When you think of it logically, the 560 is almost EXACTLY the same size
engine as a Chev 350, and both the "350" and the "380" start with the number
"3" so they must all be the same, right?
What I question is why you bought a used one from a 560 when you COULD HAVE
bought a BRAND NEW coil for a '70 GMC 350 Heavy Half for only $19.95!!
And if you squint a bit, IT even LOOKS the same.
I'll be on holidays for a while.

Will 17" X 8.5" ET20 front and 17" X 10" ET30 rear fit an SEC? I'm thinking
the front would probably fit without spacers, but would the rear? If spacers
are needed, what size? And what size tires would best fit the front and rear
without having to roll fenders? Or exactly what size 17" wheels and tires
are the
best fit?

Jay,
17x10, ET 30 will not fit at the rear. You'll need at least 20 mm spacers.
17" wheels, the tire dimensions that will bring your overal wheel diameter
the closest to OEM (205/65 HR15) would be:
235/45
245/45
265/40
275/40
If you ran 235 up front and 265 at the rear you should probably be fine.
Regards,

Just contact Hartmut Fehyl at RENNtech. Their 6.0L V8 is a copy of the
original AMG hammer engine. A sheer waste of money at $15950 if you ask
me. There are cheaper alternatives.
...and that price doesn't even include the shipping or transmission.

Bellamy,
Nice logic. Perhaps, I, too, need to take a vacation
from this, eh?
To answer some questions, the salvage yard owner told
me that the coil off the 560 SEC should work fine.
Despite having hundreds of benz's in the yard, he only
has one SEC. I was thinking of pulling the coil off a
'85 380SE but the coil was really hard to take off
given the front end smash-up. I'll give it another
shot today. By the way, I got all of these parts for
free and I haven't installed anything yet, so it's no
loss.
In general, again grossly speaking, the 560 SEC and
380 SEC are the same car except for the guts of the
engine. Remember the 380 SEC is the predecessor of the
500 and 560 series. The engine accessories should
all be theoretically interchangeable, as the basic
input/output parameters are the same or similar. I'll
verify this information about the coil by calling the
local dealer today. Hopefully this smaller coil will
be a nice "upgrade" to the later model series, if you
will. It's definitely smaller and seems to be the new
coil design on all MBZ after 1989 or so...
Sir, I'm gonna have to disagree with ya, comparing a
350 chevy with a 380 benz: it's like lemons to
Macintosh apples, I say. Besides, the next number in
the series is an "8" and not a "5", so I gotcha beat
on that one, eh?! ;)
I'll write back and tell ya what the MBZ dealer tells
me, okies?

Before you play this game, you may want to check the resistance of the coils
with an Ohmmeter.
The newer style 'block' coils produce a higher secondary voltage and have a
much faster 'recovery' time from one spark to the next.

Hi!
I went to the salvage yard today and picked up a used coil off a 1990 560
SEC. However, this coil is not the cylindrical type that goes on 380 SECs.
Does anyone know if it will really matter?
I was reading the service manual and it said at the
bottom: "Never replace ignition coil by one the ignition coils used up to
now".
Well, this is really confusing because I don't know what year the manual was
made and the manual covers a range of W126 bodies from '82 to 91+, so what
the heck kind of message is this?
coils are coils? beyond the number of windings and the strength of the
induction current, can MBZ really have made a big change between earlier
model SECs and later models? obviously, not all coils are the same but to
simply send current to the dizzy cap, can there really be that much of a
"dangerous/damage-prone"
difference?
