  Patrick:

Where are you taking the voltage measurements that you can see a difference in the alternator output and what is delivered to the batt terminals? Have you got any aftermarket gear hooked up on the electrical?

In any event, check the OverVoltage Protection Relay Fuse(s) with a meter and replace if NG.

When was the last time the voltage regulator was replaced on the alternator? If never and if the mileage on the SEC is over 120k or so, just replace it as that is likely going to go soon anyway. Hopefully the alternator contact rings (they mate with the regulator pack's carbon brushes) are not too badly worn. If you can feel a ridge or lip on the outer edges of the contact ring with your finger nail then you may need to rebuild the alternator. This ridge prevents full surface contact with a new set of brushes. Whatever you decide, do not buy a 'Reman Bosch in a Box' replacement, have your original rebuilt by a reputable electric shop.

There is a great shop on the recommended list for suppliers on MBCoupes and they are located in Fall River, MA. Reasonable and high quality plus they can build out an alternator's output to handle audio amplifiers.

I have just returned from a journey, during it I stopped the car for about 10mins which flattened the battery. I called the automobile association who came along and jump started the car. The guy checked the alternator and battery and both were ok, but on checking further the voltage generated by the alternator was about .5 less by the time it got to the battery indicating some resistance. Has anyone any idea what could be causing this.

    Any help appreciated.
