Hi Bill:
The rims I received had been re-worked to their maximum safety
specification. No further work could be done. The rims remain safe so long
as I never try and machine them. For those of you with either blemishes or
clear coat issues and you are at your safety limits there is another
approach which I just completed this past weekend.
Where my rims were in very good shape with curb rash to some extent on all 4
and several stains in the clear coat, I sought the help of a pro who
machines and reconditions the outer most lip while the wheels are mounted on
the car. He did a superb job and took about 4 hours at a cost of $250 U.S
to do his part of the job. I then went to work this weekend and removed the
surface stains in the clear coat (6 hours of work) by hand using a small
toothbrush, a cloth and a fine cut compound. All of the marks were removed
and the clear coat was preserved using this method. I then wet sanded with
2000 grit paper the black center Lorinser medallions. I cleared up all but
one scuff that was too deep to work without damaging the rest of the center
cap. (This I covered with an epoxy clear applied with artists 1/4 inch brush
and lapped onto the original coating then buffed to blend once hardened.
So, I have an excellent quality buffed up set of 1986 rims now and the
waxing continues until I can wax no more.
Hope this helps anyone with just cosmetic issues vs. cracks, dents, etc.
Dick
