It worked for the police because they were trying to correct a largely undeserved opinion of themselves. Not sure our opinion of "he who shall remain nameless" is undeserved.

Hi Talbir - I can understand how you feel and want to offer a different
perspective. I feel, as you and many others do, that much of what Mr. M
writes is uncalled for. However you and I - and the others who read his
words - have to live with them for only a minute or so. Mr. M. however has
to live with those feelings every minute of every day. That in itself is a
punishment of sorts.
I went to school in Berkeley in the 60's during the time when there were
huge riots and demonstrations. There was a European Imports car dealership
on Telegraph Avenue a few blocks from Sather Gate (the main entrance to the
campus) that was totally trashed with vehicles turned upside down and set on
fire. All sorts of things were happening. I would come home from working at
the Kaiser Center in Oakland (on my bicycle) and the streets would be thick
with tear gas.
During that time the police started to be called "Pigs" It was "Pigs this
and Pigs that". There was even a time that some vehicles had stickers that
said "Kill a Cop for Christ".
The police overcame the "Pig" thing by having little tie tacks made up that
looked like a Porky Pig face. They had Pig softball tournaments and Pig
barbecues...you get the idea. Instead of becoming furious about the Pig
thing, they made fun of it and stole the thunder from those who tried to
belittle them. After that, those who called the police "Pigs" just seemed
silly.
Maybe Mr. M is suffering from an advanced case of Tourette's syndrome and
has to lash out at everything in his life. Just laugh at it and don't let it
get to you. It worked for the Police back then.
