[W126 Coupe] would anybody be interested in big brakes?

It was a worthwhile mechanic whom I trust. But either way, he's under
the impression I don't want to needlessly spend money so perhaps it was
something that's good but not ideal and he just didn't tell me.

No truer words were ever spoken. Especially if the work was done by the
dealer. That's why, when you find a capable mechanic whom you can trust,
they are worth whatever they charge just for the peace of mind.

Also any sort of oil or greese (even from your hands) on the rotors will
get on to the pads, and be delivered to the rest of the rotor and pad.
That will cause slipping.  Those rotors must be cleaned with brake
cleaner to get all that off when installing. 
Just because a mechanic did the work, does not always mean he did it
correctly.
