[W126 Coupe] fuel pump buzzing

Richard, If the pump ever fails, rap on the pump body with something solid and I'll bet it starts working again. My BMW got by for years that way. When I turned the key I would listen for the buzzing before I turned to starter position. If I did not hear a buzz I left the ignition turned ON and grabbed some channel lock pliers giving the pump a rap or two until the buzz returned. It started every time with that procedure(not found in owners manual). Jim Alexander

It's interesting that Mike mentioned that. I just got the same advice on
the mbca forums (pump diesel fuel through the pump with 12V applied to
the pump contacts in reverse). If I have a while with the pump, I'll just
wait till summer vacation before replacing it. The performance seems
unaffected and I can't hear it at speeds higher than creeping, so I'm
guessing I have a good while. Thanks for letting me know I'm not coming
up on an impending stranding (I was a bit worried as my dad just got
stranded last month thanks to a fuel pump that went bad without
warning).
Thanks again,
Richard

The buzz is an indication of the pump wearing out. Should go for a
while
without affecting pressure. I have just replaced them in the past once
the
buzz became constant and heard while driving.

This past week while meeting with Mike Ramay in Las Vegas he mentioned
that
removal of the pump and running diesel fuel through it (I think with
pump
reversed) dissolved much of the crud and gave some additional service
life.
You might want to ask him for additional details.
