Hey Richard,

  I think you're getting "vortex" and "venturi" (venture?) confused. A venturi is simply an opening, vortex is a rapid swirling motion. No, unless it was already designed to create a vortex when air enters the intake, the air simply flows straight in, except for what turbulence is created by obstructions in the passageways, and irregularities in the castings. Some manufacturers do design this feature in, though, such as GM's Vortec 4's, V6's and V8's.
