David,

Post 88 cars have a twin fuel pump setup, whilst earlier cars have a single
pump set-up. So your 91 will have dual fuel pump set-up.

The twin fuel pumps are slimmer than the single pump. The fuel accumulators
are also different.

The retaining bracket and lines are different. But I wouldn't get intot eh
complexities of only swapping the pump. Just simply switch the entire system
over - it's very quick and straightforward.

Remove the entire existing set-up on your 85 car, which is easy, as all you
need to remove are the 4 10mm nuts retaining the fuel system bracket,
discnnect the main flexible fuel line to the fuel pump and the one to the
fuel filter. (Of course, clamp off the flexible fuel lines to prevent fuel
pouring out from tank...)

Then, simply remove the 91 system, bolt-up to the 85 and connect the fuel
lines, one to the back of the fuel pump and the other to the fuel filter.

You will have to create a very small loom, to power the additional fuel
pump. Or you can cut this from your 91 fuel pump loom.

I did the above on my 1987 W126 300SE, which had a single pump system -
fitted the entire fuel system from a 1990 300SE and it only took 30 mins.
Benefit is better efficiency and the fact that the two pumps are independant
- if one fails, you have another to keep you running.

For future fuel system parts, it's best to retain the chassis number from
your 91 car.
