The best way to use such lenses is to use a Packard
shutter. This is a simple air operated shutter which mounts
on the rear of the lens board. They can also be adopted to
fit on the front of a lens. Packard shutters used to be
plentiful on the used market but that has dried up so they
must be bought new. See http://www.hubphoto.com for more.
They are not cheap but are much less expensive than a large
new Copal and don't require machine work to fit. They are
also made in much larger sizes than any conventional
shutter.
By mounting the Packard shutter on a board with an
adaptor to take smaller lens boards the same shutter can be
used for many lenses. There is a flash synch version.
BTW, if the Cooke lens is the soft focus one they are very
rare on the used market. Cooke has begun to make these again
because they are unique in their effect. The new version is
quite expensive so you probably have a real bargain.
