Other useful free defensive tools, in order of importance:
zonealarmfirewall
    Spybot checker and destroyer
AVG virus checker
pestpatrol(free version just discovers - have to manually delete files or 
    registry entries)  checker
startupmonitor(PC Magazine)
AdAwarechecker
popfilespam/virus classifier
webwasherweb site control (cookies, pop-ups, ads)
    AntiVir virus checker
    avast! virus checker

BTW, all the checkers need regular (at least weekly) updates, which the 
programs can usually accomplish themselves.
