[LargeFormat] cost of scanning question

My little Acer ScanPrisa 1240UT was great for my 5x7 negs (the only
$125 scanner that had a 5x7 transparency adapter) for things like
cataloging negatives, printing digital "contact prints" to thumb
through, etc....but as a guy who scanned photos for a living for a few
years, really good transparency scans are gonna come from a scanner
whose price is definitely in the $1200-$120,000 range....although the
higher you get up that range the more the difference lies in the
software than in the hardware.

Paying more for a scanner in the lower end of that range gets you
greater DMax, sometimes better hardware resolution (more important than
the interpolated or software resolution), and a better "engine" (the
actual scanner CCD transport)...

Alas, my little Acer became obsolete when my Operating System outpaced
Acer's willingness to write a scanner driver for it. It does serve as a
nice place to stack my bills, however.
