How right you are. There is a sepia toned one (chlorobromide? )somewhere of
my father in battledress, also his brothers, and I could manage to get one
of my nephew later this year when he comes on holiday but wearings civvies
not BD kit. On reflection I do have one of him in uniform holding a nasty
automatic rifle very steady. Informal portraits perhaps capture the
character better than posed ones but large format might be found
intimidating. I am just setting up my 2x3 Speed Graphic rangefinder to
couple to the 105mm f4.5 Tominon I bought lately, as the camera came coupled
to a 105mm Rodenstock, so if I correctly set the infinity position maybe we
can get sharp focus nearer with the rangefinder, at least when stopped down
to f8-16. The optical viewfinder covers 105mm and 65mm as the front lens
on the viewfinder slides on/off, or I could attempt to use the wire frame
finder. Does anybody know how to use the rangefinder with longer lenses? I
suspect you can't. (Why did I change from the Rodenstock to the Tominon?
Selfcocking Copal shutter, lens as new, contrasty images, also I got a
reasonable price for the old Rodenstock in its Synchro Compur. Even when I
get these S Compurs cleaned they still run slow when left unused for a month
or two and inconsistently when measured with my Calumet tester. Or rather
there is a spread of speeds around the average. Also I heard the Tominon
might be more tolerant of rising front than the Rodenstock We'll see. For
rising front I am more inclined to use a 90mm Angulon on this 2x3 as it
covers 4x5 just. There is something to be said for having a range of lenses
(and I don't mean what one's wife might say) as you don't get LF zooms.
Cheap 5x4 lenses work well on 2x3 as you mostly use the center of field
only. Philip
