This is particularly interesting since Hillers was originally hired as
an oarsman on the expedition with Powell in the Grand Canyon. Powell
had a terrible time keeping a photographer and after several bad
experiences with various 'photographers', Hiller who had been assisting
them when ever possible, became the 'official' expedition photographer.

There is a VHS video that I have checked out of our local library that
goes into great detail about the trials and tribulations of the various
expeditions sent out west by the congress. It's called "Frontier
Photographers: The eyes of a curious nation". It is really quite good.
