[LargeFormat] 5x7 Cameras - some feedback

As anyone who was at the Tintern workshop can tell you, I have a Linhof 
Technika 5x7; and a great heavy beast it is. Especially since the only lens I 
have for it is a 300mm/f4.5 Schneider Xenar which weighs a bit more than one 
kilo... Schneider states the shutter size as "V/12+5FS", I can't remember ever 
having seen a bigger lens mounted in a shutter.
I hope to get hold of another lensboard for this one so I can use a 210mm 
Xenar, which takes a neat, little #3 shutter.

Apart from the weight it's a great camera, though I wonder why Linhof made 
them so that they could be used hand held? And if that wasn't the intention, 
why the coupled rangefinder and the leather grip?
