[LargeFormat] Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Wyndham pinhole camera project

I'm currently in the process of building a 4x5 pinhole camera from red =
oak. Particulars are:
Focal length: 76mm
35mm lens equiv: approx. 20mm
Pinhole size: .3207mm (.0126 in.), calculated by .03679*sqrt(76), hand =
made in .001" brass shim stock
Calculated f stop: 237

The lens board and backboard are both made from .250" thick red oak =
plywood (got a good deal on it). "Shutter" is just going to be a small =
piece of the .250 plywood, with a brass screw as a stop. May also =
spring load the shutter piece, in order to keep the pinhole covered when =
not in use.

I've decided to be slothful and lazy when it comes to the film: I'm =
going to use the Kodak ReadyLoad film holder and film packs. More =
expensive, but a whole lot simpler to live with.

Bought some spiffy looking brass corners, etc. to dress it up. =
Hazarding a guess that the whole thing is going to cost me under 20 =
bucks to make (with another 50.00 or so for the film back, and around =
42.00 per pack of 20 ReadyLoad film sheets).

Next project is to build an oak tripod... anyone got any design plans =
for one?

pinhole camera project

I am astounded by many of the photos that were taken during the pinhole
event, and those on the web site have inspired me to dive in, too. =
Would
anyone on the list care to share their experiences with pinhole =
photography,
especially including equipment preferences? In my younger days, I built =
a
shoebox pinhole camera, but now, I have access to better equipment and a
little more cash, so I think I'd like to work with something nicer and
easier to control. While I probably won't go the dedicated pinhole =
camera
route, unless I build my own, I was thinking about getting a precision
pinhole or two for either my 4x5 or my 8x10.

Suggestions? Comments? Large gusts of hot air?

Hi Clive and others,
It seems that you had an image of this bridge on the LF list not too
long ago. Here is an interesting variation from the Worldwide pinhole
photography day Gallery.
http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2002/index.php?id=3D32

I'l get back to you on the Wyndham hotel pinhole camera. At this satge,
suffice it to say that it went beyond our most optimistic expectations,
that the picture has an incredible beauty and power as a 12 feet wide by
9 feet high image (paper negative) and that we still have a lot of work
before we get to have a great positive image. Me. my wife and my friends
are just exhausted from having set-up the room, shot the iamge,
disassembled the set-up and processed the negative print all in a period
from saturday noon to tuesday 5:00Am, virtually non-stop. (BTW, the
F/stop was F/564...).
Talk to you soon,
Guy
