Dear Les,

A ute is a utility vehicle - you might call them pickup trucks but they
are generally made with the front of a passenger car and an open cargo space
in the back. Think in terms of the old Ford Falcon Ranchero of the 1960's.

All the major manufacturers made them for the last 4 decades from the
standard sedans. I drive a Ford Longreach ute and the General Motors company
Holden also make a similar vehicle. They give you enough haulage for 3 bales
of hay or a cement mixer and wheelbarrow or about 6 sheep if you cram them
in. The real advantage is they have a big enough engine and a soft enough
highway ride to enable you to haul for a long distance.

The farm ute carries shooters in the back and occasionally it goes over
a paddock at too high a speed and the good old boys fall out and bounce over
the landscape.
