[LargeFormat] Brownish stained negative

Just dug out my LF camera and tried to make some pictures. After
developing a neg, I found that there is a brown cloudy stain in the
negative. It is located in the middle of the neg, not towards the edges.
It does not seem to be related to the picture itself. Neither is it a
deposit on the surface of the film.

What is it, and how can I avoid it ?

One of my books tells me that this might be a sign for insufficient fixing
(how embarrassing). I did not use fresh fixer, but the fix was far from
being exhausted. - Also listed is that traces of fixer in the developer
can cause brown staining. I don't believe this is the reason in my case,
and I would expect a more random distribution of the stain in that case
anyway.

Would refixing help ? (Using fresh solution this time ...)

(If you want to know: I used HP5+, developed in Microphen stock. Fixing in
Tetenal Superfix - or Ilford Hypam, don't remember for sure now.)
