My thought would be to make the extension square. You could use baltic
birch plywood or go for mahogany. The back would have a couple of
grooves to fit the slides in the camera and the front would be either a
flush board with the flange screwed to it, or a couple of sliders so the
lens could fit on yet another board and thus wouldnt' be permanently
mounted to a 3" thick board.
