The rear element MUST be fully seated or the world comes to an end.


.... or at least the lens doesn't perform optimally, you get fuzzy
pictures, the whole expensive Eurpoean photo trip was a loss, you wife
thinks you're a fool, and your kid no longer has a college savings
account.  


Like I said the world comes to an end.  :)
