I thought he used an array of slide projector bulbs, each with its own
rheostat to control brightness, similar to the beseler resistrol idea. With
that, large areas could burn/dodge in a single exposure time, leaving the
smaller detailed areas to individual manipulation. As I recall, the
contraption also had a massive flex hose leading to a fan for cooling.
