[LargeFormat] Scanning B&W negs in colour

I would suggest dropping into the scanning list run off Tony Sleep's
web-site.

I am having trouble with my UMAX 3450 doing the same thing - the bundled
software is having trouble with negs being scanned as negs, not inverted to
positives and a short range (ie. black point 65 white 240).

My comparison is with 35mm on a CanonFS2710 and I am having far more trouble
(& the flatbed attracts cat hair)

regards Dave

Subject: [LargeFormat] Scanning B&W negs in colour

Have been playing around with the new Microtek ScanMaker4 and thought that
scanning a few 4x5 B&W negs may be worth a try. When set to B&W negs using
SilverFast, the scanner defaulted to a scan which used colour - this seemed
sensible given that many people advise use of the colour channels in
scanning B&W negs so that you have more control in the post scan process
using the colour channels.

So far the results have not been up to those obtained from trannies but
maybe the negs chosen were particularly poor! Had I been in the darkroom
though the results would definitely have been a lot better. The scanner
will never take over from the darkroom, however it could be useful in
providing quick contact sheets......

There are some scanning resources on the web, some of which seem very good.
Does anyone know a good web site with info. on this topic that they would
recommend or perhaps have experience that they would like to share on
scanning B&W negs?

All the best,
