From jasnews at johnankerberg.org Fri Nov 3 16:49:29 2006 From: jasnews at johnankerberg.org (John Ankerberg Show Staff) Date: Fri Nov 3 16:50:38 2006 Subject: JAS News - News from The John Ankerberg Show Message-ID: Dear Friends of The John Ankerberg Show, For those of you in the United States, Election Day 2006 is fast approaching. What is a Christian's responsibility to government and the election process? The John Ankerberg Show is doing an online rebroadcast from 2004 that examines how Christians should choose leaders and some of the top issues from the 2004 campaign that continue into this election as well as the principles behind those issues. While these broadcasts speak specifically regarding President Bush and John Kerry, many of the 2006 candidates are similarly polarized on the issues discussed in these programs. To watch these programs, visit our website at http://www.johnankerberg.org. We also found the following article by Frank Wright, President/CEO of National Religious Broadcasters, to be helpful in clarifying a godly approach to the election next week. We pray you find these resources helpful during the final days before the election. In Him, The John Ankerberg Show Staff http://www.johnankerberg.org The following article appeared in NRB's Washington Next Week: http://content.nrb.org/WashingtonNextWeek/vol1_iss6.htm Executive Summary Frank Wright, Ph.D., President/CEO October 27, 2006 Vol. I, Iss. 6 I spent part of Wednesday on Capitol Hill, meeting with our Government Relations Director Bob Powers and a number of other interesting people. With so much focus on Members of Congress right now, we tend to forget that Hill staffers are really the pivotal players in the legislative branch. People like Barbara Ledeen, who is highlighted in this week?s exclusive Profile of Power, are the ones who get things done. Most of Capitol Hill seems to be on edge right now. Of course, the election surfaced in each discussion that I had on Wednesday. Everyone is speculating, few have any real answers, and the polls change daily. The Republican Party, put on the defensive for the first time in more than a decade, is running ads that focus on the character ? or lack of character ? of those seeking political office. The Democratic Party, meanwhile, is claiming the moral high ground for its candidates and message. So, whom do you trust? Who is right? It is certainly a time for prayer. While NRB does not endorse any particular candidate or political party, I do know that if Congress changes hands, it will be more difficult for NRB to protect religious broadcasters than it has ever been. We will see hate crimes legislation pushed in both chambers of Congress, and threats to free religious expression will increase. Efforts to define marriage between a man and a woman will stall, and legal protection for civil unions will come to the fore because no lawmaker wants to be labeled ?intolerant? in today?s society. Yet, the message of the Gospel is not a message of tolerance. It is a message of love, hope, grace and forgiveness, by a God who does not ?tolerate? sin on any level in any of us. What then, exactly, is our responsibility in the midst of such political uncertainty? First, I believe that every American citizen has a responsibility to vote. The blood of our forebears was spilled to guarantee this right to us. Countless millions around the world would give anything to possess a right that we take for granted. Second, we must pray. Pray for your elected officials. Pray for those running in your local and state election. Pray for everyone on the ballot, not just for the individual you favor. Finally, remember your priorities. First and foremost, you are a child of the King. To whom do we owe our utmost allegiance? It is to God. When Jesus was asked, ?What is the greatest commandment?? (Mt. 22:35-40) He replied: ??You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.? This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ?you shall love your neighbor as yourself.? On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.? Focus on those words. Love and seek God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Love your neighbor. And as you labor on behalf of the Gospel, I encourage you to also spend this next week praying and interceding, not just for our nation, but for your community, church, family, friends, and neighbors. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Ankerberg Theological Research Institute (A.T.R.I.) Recently a three-judge panel of the Ninth District Court of Appeals has decided to omit the words ?under God? from the Pledge of Allegiance. The nation we love is at a historic crossroads as a small group of people are attempting to strip every vestige of religious fiber from our schools, our workplace, and the government. One person in California said he was offended that his child had to hear the words ?one nation under God? in the Pledge. Of course, no child in America is forced to say the words. It?s optional. But that?s not good enough for this man. He wants all the rest of us not to be able to say the words ?under God.? Many have said the phrase ?one nation under God? is part of who we are as Americans. We need to realize there are forces at work in our nation that want to change who we are and who we have been. They want a completely secularized society that doesn?t even recognize the God in whom our Founding Fathers believed, mentioned, and put into the founding documents of our country. We are literally watching the rewriting of American history. It?s time for people who love God to stand up and say, ?Enough is enough!? Is this what our Founding Father?s intended for our country? The apostle Paul said, ?I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.? In the middle of November, I wrote our Christmas greeting to you and told you I was having some pains in my arms and pressure across my heart. A dear friend of mine, head of emergency in one of our hospitals here in Chattanooga, administered a nuclear stress test to me. I was supposed to travel to two conferences the next two weekends. My friend came out with a smile and said, ?You're not going anywhere this weekend. You go home and rest.? He said, ?I think you might have had a small heart attack, and it looks like you have at least two blocked arteries?. So I made an appointment with one of the leading cardiologists in the city and asked, ?How fast can you see me?? Three days later I was in his office, and we started more testing. He said, ?I don't think you have had any heart damage -- so that's the good thing. But we are going to have to do an arteriogram -- in which we will put a scope up your leg and into your heart to investigate the severity of the blockage.? Remember the verses I told you about? I started repeating them back to the Lord in a more earnest fashion. I rested at home, and it was during this time that I wrote you the December newsletter. A few days later it was time to do the procedure. As I walked in to the hospital, I asked the Lord for his presence, the courage I needed to face whatever was coming up, and His peace. He gave it to me in such an overwhelming way. I praise His name! I have never had an arteriogram before, so I didn't know what to expect. I learned that it's a wonderful tool of modern medicine. I was awake during the whole procedure, talked with the doctor, looked at the screens that were showing my heart, and discussed each artery. There were so many blocked arteries that he could not stent, that I told the doctor, ?Let's go toward open-heart surgery and if possible get these arteries fixed once and for all.? Darlene was sitting out in the waiting area thinking that the doctor would put in two stents, and we would go home the next morning. But he came out and told her, ?I'm sorry, I have bad news for you. Your husband has five major arteries that are blocked and five smaller ones that are blocked.? That was a terrible blow to her. A year ago my mother-in-law had heart surgery, and everybody talked about one special doctor who could replace heart valves and do bypasses in a stellar way. He saved my mother-in-law's life, by performing a very difficult surgery. That was about a year and a half ago. Since that time I've talked to doctors all over town and they told me, ?If they had to have their valves replaced or arteries bypassed, there was only one man they wanted to do the work and his name was Dr. Richard Morrison.? So going in I told my doctors, ?If I need open-heart surgery, make sure Dr. Morrison is the surgeon.? I'll tell you more in the next letter about the five worst days of my life and how God was with me step-by-step. Dr. Morrison operated on me for over five hours. He performed 10 bypasses on my heart. When he drew a diagram for Darlene it looked like he had completely rewired my heart. I was in intensive care and then spent some days in the heart section of the hospital. The good news is that I've just come home. What I need now is your prayers that God would protect me and keep me from any complications. Please pray for my dear wife Darlene and daughter Michelle. They have really been through it. Many of you know of the things that I'm talking about. Then remember my wonderful staff who just saw God and three wonderful doctors save my life. I was a ticking time bomb. Now my staff is working on programs and there is a lot do. That is it for now. I will tell you what really happened in my end of year letter. I am praising God that he allowed me to live and in the future to serve Him and you. Please keep praying. With love in Christ, Dr. John Ankerberg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Ankerberg Theological Research Institute (A.T.R.I.) P.O.
