As I said, I don't know anything at all about herding dogs, but I go to trials every so often, as I enjoy watching the dogs work. It looks to me that relationship between sheep and a good herding dog is alot like my relationship with my sheep. They are not afraid of me, but when I say go, they go.

Don't ever think your sheep are safe from stray dogs and coyotes just because they can chase your dogs. I've had two Great Danes, a Mountain Cur, and a Sharpei/Pit Bull rescue fighting dog with my sheep. They have all been gentle around my sheep (partly due to training and partly due to disposition) and my sheep do tend to bully them. That is not even close to what happens when two or three stray dogs (or a pack of coyotes) go after the sheep. Sure, my sheep will chase my GD. But, Maggie knows not to fight back. That is far removed from a couple of stray German Shepherds ganging up on your lambs when noone is home.
