I have and HP 882C printer and what you say is true. However, I think =
the question was "how to make econofast the default setting". It always =
comes up "Normal". I'd like it to come up Econofast, too, but I don't =
know how to make that the default. Can you help with that?

Hi Jack,
I was waiting for someone with an HP to answer, but since they =
didn't, let me take a shot. If I remember correctly it is on the page =
where you select the color/mono printing. When you select mono (or Black =
and white) the econofast check box becomes available.
To get there click Start Settings Printers, Right click the HP and =
select Properties. Then page through the tabs. The checkbox is in the =
lower left portion of the page with the print quality settings.
