Thanks, Blake. That was a more complete answer than I have patience to =
write. I have much more patience on the phone, so I invite anyone who =
needs further explanation or discussion to call me at 546-7790. If you =
forget it, it is in every issue of Bits n Bytes (in the SIG section)

I'm sure Dick will reply to this, but maybe I can take him off the =
hook. =20

What he is referring to is not the same as you suggest. Many internet =
clients like Outlook Express and Internet Explorer provide a checkable =
box somewhere (usually under "preferences" or "Tools, Internet options" =
that force a connection attempt whenever you click on their icon. In =
Internet Explore, one such option can be found under "Tools, Internet =
Options, Connections" In Outlook Express a similar option is under =
"Tools, Options, General, Send and receive mail". Any one or =
combination of settings will force a connection attempt without your =
intervention. A second attempt by you to connect will product the error =
message you mentioned. In your case, the error message meant little =
because you were able to use the opened access to sent your question to =
helpline.

Tip: Automatic access via these options is OK when all is going will =
with your connections, but another variable when something is going =
wrong. When having connection problem, dump these options and start at =
the dialup adapter or modem, depending upon the systems.

What is dial in if not on line (Last Line of Dick's message)and how =
do I check this? I have heard that it is possible to dial up your home =
computer to access it when you are away would I have this with Win 98? =
If sow where is it and how do I check this?

Anything that makes your modem look busy to the system will result =

'Connection Indicators' -- the little monitors ) means that a connection =
was probably not made.=20

If some program was using the modem it should show up in the task =
list while it is active. If this happens again, press CTL-ALT-DEL and =
examine the task list for programs that shouldn't be running at the =
time. See which ones are at the top of the list. These are the most =
current ones. Have you given any of them permission for automatic =
update? How about permission to dial in if not on line?=20

message,=20
Something is already using the modem. How can I find out which =
program
was using the modem. I saw nothing in the task bar. I pulled =
the plug
because I could not exit and shut down.
