If Norton Utilities is not on the system go to the windows folder and rename REGETIT.EXE to REGEDIT.COM. Double click on it. In the right side pane look for string with a path to windos.exe, right click on it and select delete. If you don't see it navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices and follow the above advice. and then check for good measure: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce That should do it. Cross your fingers and reboot. If this worked then delete the offending windos.exe file. Be advised, that the masquerading program may still be on the system, and if it is run again you will be back to square one. If you need help with any of the above, just come on back. LOL (If all goes well don't forget to rename the .com back to .exe) (ps. you will probably need to re-associate your .exe files) [This message has been edited by rmbox (edited 01-08-2000).] Hope this helps, Wally --=====================_551953==_.ALT Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Hi Virginia, Wally Neilson here;

Hi BWise.
It's late here but I'll give this one a go before I nod off.
The
windos.exe is a sub7 backdoor type Virus.
It is usually put in place on a system by a exe masquerading as a desireable program.
It will sometimes deliver a fake error message to mask it's installation.
It needs to be removed from that system.
All of the applications with the .exe extension are being routed through the
windos.exe trojan.
There are many variants but the following should get it going.
Your win.ini file will most likely have to be edited.
There are a number of ways that this can be done but the easiest is to right click on the my computer icon and click explore.
Navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\win.ini
Double click on it.
Remove
windos.exe from the run= line.
And the load= line if it is there.
There really shouldn't be anything there.
Leave the run=
Leave the load=
If your friend can't do this then follow HKEd's advice but with the win.ini.
Follow his advice concerning system.ini.
If your friend has Norton Utilities then she is in luck.
The win.ini and system.ini can be edited using the NREGEDIT.EXE.
Rename the extension to .com (NREGEDIT.COM)
Open it up and navigate to:
INI Files\Win.INI\windows
And
INI Files\System.INI\boot
Follow the above advice.
And follow the advice below.
If Norton Utilities is not on the system go to the windows folder and rename REGETIT.EXE to REGEDIT.COM.
Double click on it.
Click on file on the menu and export the registry saving it on the desktop with a name like virus.reg.
This is just a precaution.
Be sure to select the export range - all.
The registry is a fairly dangerous place to edit so when editing there backup precautions should always be taken.
If you are not familiar with the registry and make a mistake you will be able to get your unaltered virus infected registry back.
On the left side pane navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Left click on the run folder.
In the right side pane look for string with a path to
windos.exe,
right click on it and select delete.
If you don't see it navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
and follow the above advice.
and then check for good measure:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
That should do it.
Cross your fingers and reboot.
If this worked then delete the offending
windos.exe file.
Be advised, that the masquerading program may still be on the system, and if it is run again you will be back to square one.
If you need help with any of the above, just come on back.
LOL

(If all goes well don't forget to rename the .com back to .exe)
(ps. you will probably need to re-associate your .exe files)
