This has already made a world of difference to people with whom I was talking today in Conakry. So, we've created a group now called "Guinea Solidarit?," with a Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?topic=24844&post=161936&uid=166627000126#/group.php?gid=166627000126&ref=mf?The purpose of the group is to be an alliance of "friends of Guinea and of peace and democracy in general, in support of the Guinean people and of an end to military rule and dictatorship and a beginning of freedom and prosperity." Please join us, and tell all of your friends and family to join us. I've also posted there links to many of the news stories on the events, as well as photos and a video from the march in NY on Monday. For people not on FB, below our first posting on "what we can do."? Let's continue to share ideas, contacts, and accounts of actions taken. With thanks and hope, Jen ********************** It is hard to know what is going to happen next in Guinea, and hard to come up with recommendations for international policy and action that we would all agree on at this time ? so it may be best that we focus on awareness-raising and positive pressure-putting for now.? Others may have other connections they can start using or different ideas about what should be done; please discuss if so. ? But for now and per discussions with people today, seems there are a couple of things that we can all do immediately: ? 1. WRITE TO YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER ? Writing to small town or city newspapers can be one of the best ways to get the word out - even in this day & age of FB, etc. (People still very much read those papers, especially those who are not going to hear about it on FB.) ? Recommended things to include in a letter (doesn?t have to be long): ? a.?????? A personal connection to Guinea, to democracy: if you are an RPCV, talk about your village, your family, what Guinea means to you, etc. If you are another kind of friend of Guinea and democracy, talk about why what happened caught your attention, what it means to you to live in a place where one is free, what it meant to participate in the democracy of the 2008 elections and the Obama campaign, etc. ? b.????? Some basic background into the situation, e.g.: 51 years since independence, and in that time only two presidents, both dictators; previous protests in 2006 and 2007 also ended in bloodshed; bloodless coup in December led to initial hope that this military group might be able to help Guineans transition to democratic government; betrayal of these promises as Dadis has suggested that he himself will be a candidate; utter brutality against unarmed population protesting on Monday ? at least 160 confirmed deaths but many more suspected, brutal rapes, pillaging and firing of rifles continues in the capital.? Guineans have had enough. ? c.?????? A call for the international community to not let the junta get away with the crimes they have committed or delay elections any further.? You can say that you a heartened by the statements already made by the UN Security Council; African Union; European Union; the governments of the US, France, Canada; and the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) among others strongly condemning the action and in some cases calling for immediate international investigation into the events. Can say that you expect that these statements will be followed up by real action with regard to the investigation into crimes against humanity, with real pressure on the junta and with assistance in finding a path towards democratic elections. ? Tomorrow I will post a sample letter that my husband Brian has already written to his hometown paper in Connecticut. If you do write a letter (and I hope everyone will!!), please let us all know and post it here. ? 2. EMAIL CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS & ANY JOURNALIST YOU KNOW ? Tell them what happened and that they should be covering this story. CNN, for instance, has an ?exchange? page for feedback on coverage, etc.: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form.sound.off.html?(Thanks to my mom for that tip ? and for already writing to them!) I know we?re competing for airtime and inches with the latest tsunami and earthquake, etc. ? but if CNN can find space for their current homepage story on the sex lives of university students, they can make space for the life-and-death struggle for democracy in Guinea. ? 3. HELP US LINK TO HUMAN RIGHTS ORGS ? It is clear that it will be crucial to have impartial investigations into the events of Monday and the violence and rights violations that continue, as many sound very much like crimes against humanity.? Many of you are lawyers and others work at human rights NGOs or know people who do; if you work with such groups or have contacts there, please let them know about our group and that we have links to people in Guinea who can serve as witnesses and otherwise assist with the investigations.? ? Also, Helki Spidle tells us that if anyone has specific information implicating significant individual human rights violators, please contact the US Dept of Homeland Security's Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Unit at hrvwcu at dhs.gov. (Helki, can you tell us more about how that works?) ? ? 4. IF NECESSARY, LOBBY OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES Because many of us are not yet sure what specific action the US should be taking regarding Guinea and given that their initial statement was already pretty strong, the well-informed suggestion I received was to hold off on contacting members of Congress, etc. until there is a more strategic moment or when we know better what to recommend. And at that time, we can be a small but very well-informed and powerful voice through a petition or letters, etc., calling for follow-up on the plans for international investigation or sanctions if well formulated, etc.? A card to be holding in our collective pocket. ? WHAT ELSE? ? If you do any or all of the above or any other action, please tell us about it. ? Yours in solidarity, Jen ? ________________________________ From: Tom O'Toole To: amascorro at yahoo.com; jbsfela at yahoo.com; guinea-list at klatha.com Sent: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 2:47:40 PM Subject: RE: [Guinea-list] September 28 Massacre and Attrocities Count me in.? If I learned anything from the Obama campaign it's that we need to use goals to keep us at the top of our game and to have the greatest impact possible.? SoMonday will mark one week since the September 28 tragedy, and we need to make sure the world knows. The letters don't have to be long, just heartfelt.? Below again for (updated) suggestions on content. ? Can we do it?? (You know the answer to that!) And once you?ve written a letter, please either?post a message on the Guinea Solidarit? Facebook page saying something like ?I?ve written my letter, have you?? or let me know via email so that we can keep count. ?In solidarity, Jen ******************************************************** WRITE TO YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER Writing to small town or city newspapers is still?one of the best ways to get the word out. Recommended things to include in a letter: a. A personal connection to Guinea, to democracy: if you are a returned Peace Corps volunteer, talk about your village, your family, what Guinea means to you, etc. If you?ve been to Guinea, talk about what it was like.? If you are another kind of friend of Guinea or of human rights and democracy in general, talk about why what is happening caught your attention, what it means to you to live in freedom and democracy, etc. b. Some basic background into the situation, such as (and feel free to copy): On Monday, September 28, 2009, nine months after a military junta took control of Guinea in a coup, more than 50,000 Guineans rallied in the capital of Conakry to protest the possible presidential candidacy of the junta?s leader, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara. The population was met by a merciless attack by the Guinean military who fired live ammunition into the crowd, beat people with batons, and viciously raped women and girls in the streets. ?Currently, the International Red Cross has estimated the death toll at 157 with more than 1,200 people injured, but with reports of the junta hiding bodies and many of the critically wounded in worsening state, these figures are likely much higher. The latest reports are that the violence continues with soldiers rampaging and looting with impunity in the city.? While Guinea has traditionally been a relatively peaceful country, 51 years of dictatorship and gross mismanagement of government since independence has led to an unsupportable situation.? Guineans have had enough. c. A call for the international community to not let the junta get away with the crimes they have committed or delay elections any further. ?d. Tell people to join our "Guinea Solidarit?"? Facebook group to be a part of the cause, sign a petition in support of the Guinean people,? and to learn more about what they can do. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Following the call we had yesterday, we've identified the following areas of action, as stated on the website: * Advocate to governments, international organizations and agenda setters in support of?human rights and a peaceful, democratic transition in Guinea. * Serve as a resource to human rights organizations, law clinics, and international agencies investigating human rights abuses in Guinea. * Serve as a resource and nonpartisan, multiethnic forum for activists, journalists?and victims of human righs abuses in Guinea. * Conduct outreach and provide resources for educators and student groups to raise awareness and promote activism in support of human rights and democracy in Guinea. To acheive these things, we need you. Specifically: * If you are a lawyer, law student, human rights clinic, pro-bono clinic, or human rights organization staffer: please email the new head of our law/human rights subcommittee, Rachel Cherington, at rcherington at yahoo.com, for more information and to get connected. ? ????????? If you are a high school or middle school teacher - or high school/middle school student -?and want to work on discussion guides/lesson plans or anything else cool that you think of, please email ... me (jbsfela at yahoo.com) - until I can confirm our new education head -- or tell me if you want to be that person! ? * If you are a university student or faculty member and want to help organize information and advocacy sessions at your school, please email our campus organizing heads Ataoulaye Fela Bah?(afb21232 at columbia.edu), Susan Martonosi (smartonosi at yahoo.com), and Lisa Mueller (lmmueller at ucla.edu) ? * If you are?are following the policy options very closely and/or have links to?lawmakers and other decision-makers and want to be involved in our policy/advocacy subcommittee, please email me at (jbsfela at yahoo.com). ? * If you are?are following the policy options very closely and/or have links to?lawmakers and other decision-makers and want to be involved in our policy/advocacy subcommittee, please email me at (jbsfela at yahoo.com). ? * ?We are also looking for someone to take the lead on victim support efforts that people want to do, i.e. possibly connecting to Medecins Sans Frontiers to channel donations, etc. Please let me know if you are interested in this angle. ? * Finally, we need people to be regular bloggers posting on our site, getting the discussion going on what?s going on in Guinea in general. If this is you, let me know.? We are now nearly 500 strong on Facebook ? and I haven?t had a chance to count the number of letters that have been flying out but it?s got to be dozens (and that?s only the ones I know about).? At this time, it?s about everyone making the most of these tools we have to start taking whatever initiatives you think would be helpful to further our collective goals. ? Hillary Clinton's statements today are a real testament to how urgent this cause is and why our voices on the issue are so critical. We discovered this week that there is already an NGO in Guinea (that of Nadine Bari, the writer) with the name "Guinese-Solidarity." Not exactly the same but close enough that it was starting to cause confusion as we start to become known in Guinea. Soooo ... it's with a bit of sadness but also with the determination to keep moving that Ataoulaye and I have renamed us "Alliance Guinea" - which apparently has no existing equivalent. We would have asked for inew name deas but with the website already created, we had to make the change fast. We hope you like it; it's cool in that "alliance" is the same in French or English - pronounce it either way you like. Welcome to the Alliance! And, our revised website is now up and fully operational: www.allianceguinea.org . We're really excited about?its abilty to faciliate resource sharing,?and, most importantly, reach people - especially Guineans -- who are not on Facebook. It is also completely bilingual. Check it out, leave a comment - and let us know if you are interested in being a regular blogger (or member of any one of the "sub-committees" that are now forming - see the site for more info). Finally, I'd like to take a moment to sincerely thank my dear friend Ben Kelley, who had the idea for the website in the first place and has been instrumental - often in the wee hours of the night -- in acquiring our domain name and creating the site (twice!). Thanks, Ben. Still in solidarity, Jen Jennifer Swift-Morgan Afia/Labe '99-'02 jbsfela at yahoo.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There will be a march in Washington DC this Monday the 26th [of October] to raise awareness about the events of September 28 in Guinea and to garner continued support for justice and a transition to and through democratic elections. The march is designed to emphasize Guinean women?s participation in particular, and thousands of people are expected to join in from around the country. It?s short notice ? but can we mobilize as many Guinean and non-Guinean friends of Guinea from the Alliance Guinea group to join in as well? The march will begin at 10am Monday in Lafayette Park in DC, and will include stops at the State Department and possibly Capitol Hill. We are also making arrangements for smaller meetings with key State and Hill representatives to inform, show support for statements made thus far, and discuss ways to move forward. If you are in the Washington/MD/VA area, we hope to see you there. If you are in another city, especially on the East Coast, and wish to get connected with transportation to and from the march with others from your area, please email allianceguinea @ gmail.com. Let?s make this as big a show of solidarity as possible ? demonstrating that Guinean tragedies and dreams are everyone?s tragedies and dreams. ? The Guinean organizing committee -- especially the women's group?here in New York - has been working around the clock on this?and I think we'll easily have a couple thousand people there. My hope is to have a very strong showing of non-Guinean friends of Guinea as well. Asking now for some help: we have some informal meetings scheduled on Capitol Hill as part of our actions tomorrow, and I am looking for someone who speaks French and knows Guinea well who can be part of the small group of mostly Guineans taking part in these meetings. If you can do this or know someone who can, kindly let me know asap. Cell number: 202.550.7459.
