Dear FOG list members,
I am writing to announce two volunteer positions in Guinea with the NGO
Tostan. We are hoping to find folks with previous Guinea and./or Africa
experience, and we appreciate if you'd send any potential candidates along
to Sarah Nerhling, Tostan's volunteer coordinator: volunteer at tostan.org
Position 1:
*Field Volunteer for Program Monitoring*
*Location:* Labé, Guinea (appx. 7 hours from Conakry, Tostan Guineaheadquarters)
*Hours per week: *Full-time, but must be flexible to work/travel on weekends
depending on tasks
*Responsibilities:*

Investigate impacts and effects of Tostan programs in the field through
village visits and participation in program evaluations
-
Synthesize monthly Regional Coordinator and Supervisor reports for entry
into Tostan Guinea database
-
Writing of village portraits and collection of anecdotes
-
Assist National Coordinator with various tasks
-
Research, write, and deliver quarterly reports to project funders (USAID
and UNICEF), in coordination with National Coordinator and Executive
Director
-
Building capacities of employees in computer use, report writing,
statistical data collection and analysis, and English
-
Miscellaneous public relations projects such as PowerPoint presentations,
brochures, films (if qualified)
*Qualifications:*
-
At least a Bachelors degree in social sciences, business, management, or
related field
-
Strong written and spoken proficiency in both English and French (writing
samples requested in both languages)
-
Previous experience with *either* a nongovernmental or nonprofit
organization *or* experience in Africa/non-western country
-
Strong computer skills in Microsoft office suite (Access or other
database software *preferred*)
-
Ability to work independently, self-motivate, and to manage multiple
tasks at once
-
Ability to be flexible, and considerate of limited resources
-
Considerate of different cultural norms
-
If a woman, ability to operate in a male-dominated society, including
occasional cat calling/harassment from men
*Compensation: *housing and utilities (rooms at the office), all inter-city
travel, and some taxi and Internet communication (in Conakry) included
Tostan-related travel from Conakry to Dakar included
Accommodations for stipend or other living expenses should be discussed with
Tostan Executive Directors prior to commitment
*All other flights to and from **Guinea** will be paid for by the volunteer*
Position 2:
*National Coordination Assistant Volunteer*
*Tostan **Guinea*
*Title: *National Coordination Assistant Volunteer
*Organization: *Tostan Guinea
*Location: *Labé, Guinea, West Africa
*Reports to*: Tostan Guinea National Coordinator
*Anticipated Start Date: *April 2008
*Duration:* One year minimum
*Duties and Responsibilities*
The volunteer will be expected to work Monday through Friday 8:00 am -5:00
pm, except national holidays. After a training period with the Volunteer
Coordinator in Dakar, the volunteer will work with local staff members to
develop a list of specific deliverables for their year of service. The
volunteer will be responsible for making monthly updates to Tostan's
National Coordinator. Supervision and training missions may require the
volunteer to travel to the interior for several weeks at a time. The
volunteer will always have field staff support during these missions and
transportation provided.
Previous volunteers filling this position have been responsible for the
following duties:

Investigate and communicate impacts and effects of Tostan programs in the
field through going on village visit, participating in program evaluations,
and writing and sharing reports

into Tostan Guinea database

Assist National Coordinator with various tasks, ranging from
organizational to administrative to linguistic, etc.

Building capacities of employees in computer use, report writing,
statistical data collection and analysis, and English through trainings,
workshops, and collaborating/critiquing
-
Assist staff to professionally present Tostan Guinea's work: produce
publicity materials (in French and English), represent Tostan Guinea at
local and national conferences, interface with donor visitors, etc.

brochures, films (if qualified)
