I was a PCV stationed in Bissikrima from '04-'05 and am married to Edil Raffi, a Guinean from Mamou. We're trying to plan a trip to Guinea sometime between October and March and are hoping to get some tips on visas, plane tickets, malaria meds, etc. If anybody is planning a trip around the same time or has gone in the past year or so, we would love to hear from you. If there are any American/Guinean couples who have made the trip and could advise us concerning American vs Guinean passports, etc, that'd be great. We'll also be traveling with our toddler, which should make things interesting... You can reply to her directly at koffordk at uchastings.edu Stephanie ------ Greetings Stephanie, My name is Kelsey Kofford, and I am conducting research on behalf of the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies at UC Hastings Law School in San Francisco, California. My research is about the current status of single women in Guinea, particularly single (unmarried) Mandingo women. I am trying to learn what (if any) power, threat, or control the government or any particular populations or groups may have over these women, and if they are being persecuted based on their single status, Mandingo ethnicity, or perhaps the two in conjunction? It seems there is an absolute dearth of any current research or reporting on this subject, so I figured I would direct my inquiry to a legitmate source knowledgable about Guinea, and as such I am reaching out to you for any answers or thoughts you may have. Perhaps you could be so kind as to redirect me to another individual or organization who might be able to assist me in my query if you have no time or information to share yourself? I thank you very much for your assistance, and in advance for any response. The Office of Child Labor, Forced Labor and Human Trafficking (OCFT) here at the U.S. Department of Labor's International Bureau of Labor Affairs (USDOL/ILAB) will be undertaking a competitive review of grant proposals during the week of August 4th in Washington, D.C. for the FY08 Combating Exploitive Child Labor through Education in Guinea Project. The projects that we fund aim to achieve five major goals: 1) Withdraw or prevent children from involvement in exploitive child labor through the provision of direct educational services; 2) Strengthen policies on child labor and education, the capacity of national institutions to combat child labor, and formal and transitional education systems that encourage children engaged in or at-risk of engaging in exploitive labor to attend school; 3) Raise awareness of the importance of education for all children and mobilizing a wide array of actors to improve and expand education infrastructures; 4) Support research and the collection of reliable data on child labor; and 5) Ensuring the long-term sustainability of these efforts. By increasing access to basic education, projects funded by USDOL help nurture the development, health, safety, and enhanced future employability of children engaged in or at-risk of entering exploitive labor in geographic areas or economic sectors with a high incidence of exploitive child labor. Given your background?and expertise, especially your PhD dissertation research on?the Republic of Guinea and work on the social reintegration of ex-combatant youths,?we think that you may be interested and especially well-suited to help us review these grant applications, as we are looking for people with experience with experience with Guinea, the U.S. Government, child labor, etc. to give the Department an external perspective. If you think you may be interested and/or available for this or future application reviews, we would greatly appreciate your letting us know. In November 2005, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa?s first elected female president. A former finance minister known as the ?Iron Lady,? Sirleaf quickly appointed a team of strong women around her, including the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Commerce, and the Chief of Police. Iron Ladies of Liberia follows these women over the course of their turbulent first year in office ? a year which will determine the future of their country. Iron Ladies of Liberia is a unique look behind the scenes at the rebirth of a nation and democracy in action, under the steady hand of women determined to make history and move their country forward. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
