She shipped over 25 soccer balls and pumps to be used for events and prizes at Girl's Conference. Her plan was to write about the event, and possibly use some photos taken by PCVs and use the article to solicit donations for the next Girl's Conference. This is her first attempt at supporting worthy causes. I have made contact with a PCV who was able to tell me how the soccer balls were intended to be used, but cannot find any information that would be useful for an article to solicit future donations. I was given the email address for Annaliese Limb, who apparently arranged the event, but get no response from her... Perhaps she is no longer there. If anyone has any information about how the soccer balls were used, or can give me a contact in Guinea who may have some information, it would be appreciated. My cousin is an avid soccer player and fan. She got the Stanford Girl's Soccer Team to donate the 25 balls that were sent. It would be nice to give her, and the Stanford Girl's Soccer Team some feedback as to how their donation was used and appreciated. Thanks in advance for any information that could help support future Girls' Conferences. Wayne Kleck waynekleck at yahoo.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Operations research is the use of mathematical modeling to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all sorts of systems (in this case, urban transport and water systems). This meeting is intended to guide operations researchers (like myself) in conducting *relevant* research to solve problems facing Africa. So while the target audience of the conference is operations researchers, the conference organizers are hoping to attract representatives from NGO's, NPO's and policy makers (basically anyone with a good understanding of urban transport and water management issues in Africa) so that the operations researchers can have a clearer understanding of the constraints, objectives, obstacles, etc. inherent to improving these systems. The conference announcement with all the details is below. I hope to be able to attend it myself, but it overlaps a bit with another conference I'm attending. Cheers, Susan Martonosi Koundara '99-'01 **** The organizers of Operational Research Practice for Africa (James J. Cochran, Serigne Gueye, Eric Soubeiga, and Claude Yugma) are very pleased to announce that registration is open for ORPA 4 - Using Operations Research to Address Urban Transport and Water Resource Management Issues in Africa (http://www.orpagroup.net/ORPA2008/index.html). The conference will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. on October 10 -11, 2008 (the Friday and Saturday immediately preceding the 2008 INFORMS Conference). We encourage all academicians, practitioners, policy makers, and doctoral students who are interested in using operations research to address urban transport and water resource management issues in Africa to register for ORPA 4 and participate in the sessions and discussions that will comprise this conference. The program will feature: - Amako? Adolehoume - D?legu? G?n?ral Solidarit? Internationale sur les Transports et la Recherche en Afrique Sub-Saharienne (SITRASS) - INRETS-DEST - Serigne Gueye - Assistant Professor, University of Le Havre - Dave Goldsman - Professor, H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, the Georgia Institute of Technology - Karl Hofmann - President/CEO, Population Services International - Hans Ittmann - Executive Director of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) - Johan Joubert ? Senior Lecturer, University of Pretoria - Hammou Laamrani - WaDImena Project Coordinator, WaDImena - Regional Water Demand Initiative, International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa - Stephen Riley - Executive Director & Secretary/Treasurer, Nuba Water Project We also hope to display some of Gil Garcetti's photographs from his Women, Water and Wells: Photographs of West Africa show (for more information on Gil, visit his website at http://www.garcetti.com/index.php). Registration fees are: Full ORPA 4 Registration Early (by September 15) $275.00 Late (after September 15) $325.00 Doctoral Student ORPA 4 Registration $125.00 Because student registration fees are heavily subsidized, students must be nominated to participate in ORPA 4. A student who wishes to register for ORPA 4 should submit pdf copies of the following documents electronically to ORPA 4 General Chair James J. Cochran at jcochran at cab.latech.edu. 1. her/his current vita 2. a statement of interest explaining how participation in ORPA 4 will enhance her/his career plan 3. a letter from her/his academic advisor or department chair certifying that s/he is a full time doctoral student in operations research or a related discipline (note that we do encourage applications from students from any discipline who have sincere interests in applying operations to the problems to be addressed at the ORPA 4 conference). The ORPA 4 organizers will review all student nominations and respond promptly to allow student registrants ample time to make travel arrangements. Registration is limited, so please be sure to register soon. Note that registration includes: ? conference material ? lunch on both days of the conference ? a dinner banquet on the first day of the conference ? breakfast on the second day of the conference ? snack breaks All participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel and lodging. Participants may visit the http://meetings.informs.org/DC08/hotel.html for information about local hotels We also suggest that ORPA 4 participants register for and attend the 2008 conference of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), which will immediately follow ORPA 4 in the same venue. Information on registering for the 2008 INFORMS conference may be found at http://meetings.informs.org/DC08/. Please send all questions regarding ORPA 4 to Conference General Chair James J.
