Hi Guinea-listers-
While this project isn't in Guinea, I thought I'd forward it on
regardless, as it's being run by a wonderful organization with incredibly
low overhead and proven results (in true Peace Corps fashion).
Thanks for your consideration, and hi to all my stage-mates!

Dear Friends,
In less than eight weeks I'm going to attempt the most physically arduous
event of my life: an Ironman race in Madison, Wisconsin. Like the famed
race that takes place in Kona, Hawaii, the event consists of a 2.4 mile
swim, 112 mile bike, topped by a full marathon-a 26.2 mile run-all of
which must be completed in under 17 hours.
What makes me think I can pull this off? I've been participating in
triathlons for the past three years, completing over a half dozen in that
time, including two half Ironman distance events (as well as a marathon
and multiple 100 mile cycling events).
In the past four and a half months of training, I've swum over 100,000
meters, biked about 1,400 miles, run nearly 400 miles, and taught dozens
of spinning classes in preparation, all guided by a professional triathlon
coach.
The next five weeks are going to be the most difficult as the mileage
builds-and this is where you come in. I decided months ago that in order
to get through this tough training regime, the race had to be about
something other than ego and a test of will and endurance. I'll be
participating in this race to raise money for a wonderful organization,
Machik (www.machik.org).
My colleagues at National Geographic may recognize Machik, as it was
started by National Geographic Emerging Explorer Losang Rabgey (
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/emerging/lrabgey.html) and her sister
Tashi. While there are many organizations worthy of fundraising dollars,
I've decided to support Machik because of the remarkable results they
achieve with so little resources and minimal overhead.
In 2002, Machik opened a primary school in the remote, mountainous
community of Chungba in Tibet. In a community with 90% illiteracy, this
school, its dynamic staff and equally impressive students (nearly 300,
over half female) quickly earned awards and became a model for the region.
Next year, it will celebrate the graduation of its first class. But
there's one problem: there isn't a middle school in the area for that
class of students to go to. Machik is now building one to meet that need,
with a budget of $40,000. Your donation can help make it happen.
You can donate to this cause easily and securely by clicking on

pasting the link into your browser. If you're considering donating, I
encourage you to do so now, before this email slips to the bottom of your
inbox (as I know happens with me). Your donation is fully tax deductible,
and each donation will help power me through the next two months of tough
training, not to mention the race itself. Please feel free to pass this
on to any others who may be interested in donating!
In you're in the Madison area on September 9th, I encourage you to come
out and cheer me on! You'll also be able to track my results live on
www.ironman.com.
Many thanks for considering this request, and for your support, whatever
form it may take.
Best wishes,
Carrie
