[Guinea-list] West African currency union (on verra bien)

How does the CFA work, anyhow? I remember it was tied somehow to the french
Franc, but I don't recall the details. Why is it better to have a currency
that isn't linked to the CFA?

And are Guinea's economic troubles in part linked to its currency? I recall
that the exchange rate of the GF fluctuated between 1000 to 1500 francs to
the dollar while we were there... That's a big drop! How does that affect
the country's economy, and local economies?

I mean, I imagine in the village they don't get affected by the currency
fluctuations that much, because very few products are imported. But in the
cities, the prices must rise accordingly. And across the board, the lousy
exchange rate makes foreign products accessible only to the rich
"patrons"...

Someone have some economic insight for me?
