         "the rejection of Israel forms an integral part of the Palestinian ethos," and the real goal is not a state beside Israel but one in place of it-as abundantly expressed to this day in every Palestinian medium from mosque sermons to TV shows to schoolbooks to newspaper articles and cartoons.

        It is perverse, if not altogether surreal, that the international community persists in treating with seriousness the negotiations between the Palestinian Authority and Israel that deal in some considerable measure with the "key issue" of return of refugees. It's time to get real: The "right of return" does not exist.

         One would think from many sources that if only President George Bush tried harder or Israel had a more stable government that there would be an Israel-Palestinian peace treaty next week. Comforting and hopeful, perhaps, but stupid.

         As long as the Palestinian world was divided into two separate entities only on the physical level, this could go on, yet in January this world will be divided into two on the legal front as well - a development that would mark the ultimate collapse of Palestinian politics.
