            The Land of Israel Necklace

        Gush Katif, Joseph's Tomb in Shechem, and Hebron were all symptoms, but the undying passion to wrest Jerusalem away from Jewish hands is and always will be the disease.

         Now, there are no more doubts: The revelations regarding the Palestinian cell that attempted to assassinate Israel's prime minister in Jericho on August 6 put an end to the debate on whether Mahmoud Abbas is the true representative of the Palestinian people.

         When a shared premise is lacking, not only do negotiations usually fail, but they usually do more harm than good. Such is the case in the forthcoming Annapolis, Maryland, talks. One side (Israel) seeks peaceful coexistence while the other (the Arabs) seeks to eliminate its negotiating partner, as evidenced by its violent actions, its voting patterns, replies to polls, political rhetoric, media messages, school textbooks, mosque sermons, wall graffiti, and much else. 

        d.. The face of delusion

         Oslo should have taught everyone the dangers of a "peace process" built on delusions. The delusion then was that Yasser Arafat truly wanted peace. By the time he died, virtually nobody involved in the peace process still believed that, yet the damage had been done: Years of soaring Palestinian terror, and consequent harsh Israeli security measures, eroded belief that peace was possible among Israelis and Palestinians alike. Yet current Israeli-Palestinian talks are also being built on delusions. And the results are liable to be equally devastating.
