            The Land of Israel Necklace

         I am a white South African who became a journalist mostly because I wanted to report and expose the evils of apartheid in the Eastern Cape of my country. I know about apartheid. During my 20 years in Israel I have seen NOTHING that in any way compares to that system - whether on the books (in the government, judiciary and security services) or on the streets - among the Israelis I have come to know so well.

         And so Hamas's position improves by the day. On Sunday, just after Israel made its first payment of $120 million to Salaam Fayad's Fatah government, Fayad announced that the money will go to pay salaries of PA employees in Gaza.
        This tells us two things. First, it shatters the illusion of two distinct PAs - one that is bad and one that is good. By paying PA employees in Gaza, Fayad showed that from Fatah's perspective, there is only one PA, not two.
        Second, his move exposes as a lie Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's claim that the money was going only to Fatah. Indeed, it showed that Israel is funding Hamas.

         What if Hamas and Fatah are not really enemies? The media has always represented Hamas and Fatah as great enemies, but this has always flown in the face of the facts.

         The clear message Hamas is trying to convey by Johnston's release is that it is in charge. As spokesman Abu Marzouk put it to the Associated Press in Damascus, Hamas is proving that it is "a responsible group ... preserving the people's rights, security and stability." This is indeed how Israel and the world should treat Hamas: as the entity responsible not only for its own actions but for Gaza as a whole. Yet holding Hamas responsible is not what Israel or the international community is doing.
