      1. ISRAEL, IN THE END YOU WOULD LOSE IT ALL
      By Ryan Jones - Jerusalem Newswire - April 21, 2004=20
      It's all about setting precedence. If you give away a little =
today, the next guy will give away a little more tomorrow, until =
eventually there is nothing left to give away.=20

      What is clear is that men like Ariel Sharon and Binyamin Netanyahu =
truly believe Israel is better served with them at the helm. What also =
appears clear is that they are giving little thought to what happens to =
the nation the day after they are gone.=20

      When that day comes, their actions, and their compromises, will be =
used as both example and justification for what their successors will =
do.=20

      If Israel's current Likud leadership uproots the Gaza Jewish =
community and four Samarian settlements, the next leftist premier will =
feel no special restriction against evacuating, say, all of Judea.=20

      We've seen this played out once before.=20

      In 1998, Netanyahu relinquished Israel's control over most of =
Hebron - Judaism's second holiest city. Two years later, Ehud Barak was =
prepared to give in to nearly every single "Palestinian" demand, =
including sovereignty over half of Jerusalem.=20

      Why? Because the situation with the Arabs had improved?=20

      Hardly.=20

      But Netanyahu had paved the way. He had given some, and so Barak =
felt at ease giving more, jumping at the chance to be peacemaker of the =
year.=20

      This is a perilous blueprint. If each successive prime minister =
further erodes Israel's red lines, those lines will eventually converge =
on Tel Aviv, and the Jewish state will be no more.=20

      Oh but this time, say supporters of the Sharon plan, Israel has a =
letter from US President George W. Bush - "the best friend Israel has =
ever had in the White House" - promising that after leaving Gaza it can =
hold onto those "West Bank" settlements really important to it.=20

      Baloney.=20

      The letter Sharon is waving at his Likud Party isn't worth the =
paper it's written on.=20

      Not because Bush is a bad and dishonest man, but because one day =
soon - whether in seven months or four years and seven months - he will =
no longer be president of the United States.=20

      And then what?=20

      Is there some law that says every future American president will =
be bound to deal with Israel and the peace process based on Bush's =
letter to Sharon? Of course not.=20

      The next president will be free to alter US foreign policy =
regarding the Israeli-Arab conflict to best fit his own world outlook =
and cater to the political pressures facing him.=20

      So why is Israel willing to cede a blood-bought piece of its =
ancient homeland for written "guarantees" that have no staying power?=20

      Has the land of Israel become so cheap in the eyes of its leaders? =
Or does Sharon really believe that his willingness to compromise on Gaza =
will forever solidify Israel's position in the eyes of the world?=20

      The Prime Minister's own words, spoken four years ago when Ehud =
Barak was working to dismantle the Jewish state, echo on:=20

      "We are a strong people, with weak leaders."=20

      Those of us who have read the end of THE book know that the =
children of Israel will never again be separated from their land - =
whether by outside forces or by their own leaders.=20

      Holding onto this, we will in prayer and in action oppose all =
efforts to uproot Jews who have been replanted in their own land, =
trusting, even when hope appears lost, that He Who is Israel's Keeper is =
watching over His promises to her, to perform them.=20

      2.   WHY I CELEBRATE RANTISI'S DEATH
      By Irwin N. Graulich - April 21, 2004=20
      Another congratulatory "mazel tov" goes out to the Israeli Apache =
helicopter crew!=20

      Many people, including Jews, were angry over my recent article, =
"Yassin's Ticket To Heaven. " How dare I express "any" joy over the =
Sheik's demise. Many emails implied that, "I am no different than all =
the terrorist groups who give out candy and march through the streets in =
victory after a suicide bombing."=20

      How did this twisted moral equivalence develop where the death of =
evil is no longer a cause celebre of the decent? Remember that great =
scene after WWII in Times Square, where hundreds of thousands of people =
were celebrating the death of Hitler, and the Allied victory over Japan? =

      I am proud that America and Israel have imbibed the =
Judeo-Christian ethic that encourages fighting evil and killing it. Of =
course, the rest of the world is trying to make us feel guilty about our =
values and immensely moral actions. That is why America is hated for =
liberating Iraq, and Israel is hated for standing up against 5 Arab =
countries that were intent on destroying it. When these Arab countries =
became so fearful of tiny Israel after 3 wars, they proceeded to create =
a new replacement pawn called the Palestinians.=20

      For those Jews filled with rage at me and not at the terrorists =
and their leaders, they obviously had not attended a synagogue during =
the month of March. It was probably no coincidence that Sheik Yassin's =
death coincided with the holiday of Purim, where Jews "joyously" =
commemorate the death of Haman and his sons.=20

      Whoever has not experienced this holiday, Christian, Jew, Muslim =
or Secular, is certainly missing an important life experience. Fun is =
the name of the game and even excessive drinking is encouraged! . There =
is screaming, yelling and jumping up and down every time the evil =
Haman's name is mentioned during the Scriptural readings. Yet some Jews =
remarkably have contempt for my elation over the wonderful deaths of =
Yassin, Rantisi and any future Hamas terrorist leaders. Coincidentally, =
the word Haman is only one letter off from Hamas. Perhaps a little =
divine revelation here.=20

      A new, "progressive" European mentality has infected the world in =
the 21st century with an overemphasis on love and compassion. Although =
both of these traits are important, they must be properly channeled. As =
The Talmud clearly states, "Those who are compassionate when they should =
be cruel, will be cruel when they should be compassionate." Just watch =
the cruelest regimes in the world start blaming Israel at the UN for =
ridding the world of this evil doctor.=20

      Unlike Jack Straw, the morally confused foreign minister of Great =
Britain, most Americans m! ake a clear distinction between good and =
evil, and the killing of innocents. The Straw man sees no difference =
between a terrorist leader and a democratically elected head of state. =
It is no wonder that America's Founding Fathers could not wait to get =
the hell out of "Straw country by the Thames."=20

      Any nation that was inspired to put the word "Great" in front of =
its name, must have some severe psychological issues with its own meager =
talents. Other than Tony Blair and a relatively few select individuals, =
the British have been infected by a morally decaying European Union. In =
fact, the British are still angry with America over their loss in the =
Revolutionary War.=20

      Hamas leader Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi publicly announced that he =
would prefer death by Apache over cardiac arrest. A partnership of God =
and Ariel Sharon granted him his eternal wish. Rantasi, an =
ultra-arrogant pediatrician from Gaza said, "I will not leave one Jew in =
Palestine." He was absolutely correct because he left 5 million.=20

      Hamas is a terrorist organization that must be dealt with in =
precisely the same manner as al Qaeda. There is no difference between =
bin Laden and Rantisi, except Rantisi is now pushing up daisies and will =
likely be pure fertilizer when bin Laden finally joins him. The =
elimination of these individuals should bring joy to the hearts of every =
respectable man, woman and child. The bad guys are dead, just like in =
the happy endings of those great Hollywood movies.=20

      The destruction of evil is a very healthy concept, yet many =
individuals seem disturbed by it. Evil is a cancer on the soul. Just =
like oncologists provide us with a certain joy by destroying tumors and =
harmful cells, there should be an equivalent emotional high in "burning =
the evil out of our midst." We do not feel sorry for cancer or =
terrorists.=20

      Although Rantisi's white automobile was unrecognizable, his face =
looked much worse. Yet those Hamas warriors "bravely" carried his body =
with its exposed, deformed head through the streets of Gaza City, so =
that even little children would be affected by the blood stained =
imagery.=20

      The terrorist strategy is a death cult that declares victory when =
they are killed. How is that for an inverted truth? Remember when =
victory meant that you destroyed the enemy? The evil terrorists cannot =
face the reality of constantly losing their battles, so they have =
invented a totally new military strategy that defines victory with =
defeat. Being sent to Club Med-Heaven to have imaginery relations with =
72 virgins has become all the rage.=20

      But why die? Perhaps America and Israel should simply drop =
hundreds of thousands of Las Vegas travel brochures over these terrorist =
cells and Islamic marches in Gaza, the West Bank and Iraq. They will =
begin to realize that is indeed possible to! have these 72 women while =
they are still alive, along with some great food and other amenities. =
You do not need to kill Jews. Take the $25,000 that your family receives =
from the Hamas political arm and instead, book a flight to Vegas.=20

      It is indeed humiliating that the entire Arab and Muslim world of =
1.2 billion people cannot defeat 5 million Jews in Israel, nor match any =
of their accomplishments in science, technology, literature or medicine. =
It is humiliating that Israel actually does what it says it will do to =
terrorist leaders, while these macho-terrorist leaders talk a big game. =
It is humiliating that every single Arab and Muslim leader saw =
"themselves" in the Saddam capture video and the Rantisi funeral =
procession. It is humiliating to the world that tiny Israel and =
relatively small America does what it wants throughout the world in =
fighting and destroying evil. Let the celebration begin!=20

      3. FAITH IN THE DEPTHS OF HELL
      Jeff Jacoby - Boston Globe - April 19, 2004=20
      The order to kill every pregnant Jewish woman had been issued that =
morning. So when a Nazi guard patrolling the Jewish ghetto in Kovno =
noticed a pregnant Jew walking past the local hospital, he shot her at =
point-blank range. She died on the spot.=20

      Hoping to save the baby, some passersby rushed the dead woman into =
the hospital. An obstetrician determined that she had been in her last =
weeks of pregnancy, and said that if surgery were performed immediately, =
her baby might be rescued.=20

      But could such surgery be squared with Jewish law, which is =
stringent in its concern for the dignity of the dead? If the baby didn't =
make it, the mother's body would have been mutilated for nothing.=20

      The question was put to Rabbi Ephraim Oshry, a young rabbinical =
scholar. He didn't hesitate. "When saving a life is involved, we are not =
concerned with the desecration of the dead," he ruled. Besides, if the =
murdered mother could speak, wouldn't she welcome the "desecration" of =
her body if it would assure her baby's survival? He ordered the =
operation to proceed at once, and the baby was born alive.=20

      Then came a horrifying postscript. "The cruel murderers . . . came =
into the hospital to write down the name of the murdered woman. . . . =
When they found the baby alive, their savage fury was unleashed. One of =
the Germans grabbed the infant and cracked its skull against the wall of =
the hospital room. Woe unto the eyes that saw this!"=20

      This case from May 1942 was one of many that Rabbi Oshry was =
called upon to decide during the Nazi occupation of Kovno, Lithuania's =
second-largest city. He recorded the heart-rending questions that were =
brought to him in brief notes on scraps of paper, then buried the scraps =
in tin cans. Someday, he hoped, those scraps might be found -- evidence =
that even in the midst of the Nazi inferno there were Jews who clung to =
their God and His law, refusing to abandon Him even as they must have =
wondered whether He had abandoned them.=20

      More than 90 percent of Kovno's 40,000 Jews were killed in the =
Holocaust -- either by the Germans or by their Lithuanian collaborators. =
Rabbi Oshry was one of those who survived. After the war he retrieved =
his notes and began writing them out as full-length rabbinical rulings, =
or responsa. These were ultimately published in five Hebrew volumes; in =
1983 a book of excerpts in English -- Responsa from the Holocaust -- was =
published by Judaica Press.=20

      I read Responsa from the Holocaust soon after it came out, and =
found it deeply moving. With the approach of Holocaust Remembrance Day, =
which occurs this year on April 19, I took it down from the bookshelf =
last week -- and again found it powerful and affecting. The questions =
laid before Rabbi Oshry can reduce you to tears, but what is really =
extraordinary, I saw now, was that anyone would care enough to ask such =
questions in the first place.=20

      In October 1941, "one of the respected members of the community" =
asked Rabbi Oshry if he could commit suicide. His wife and children had =
been seized by the Nazis, and he knew that their murder was imminent. He =
feared that the Nazis would force him to watch as his family was killed, =
and the prospect of witnessing their deaths was a horror he couldn't =
bear to face. He begged for permission to take his own life and avoid =
seeing his loved ones die.=20

      Later that month, the head of another household came to Rabbi =
Oshry "with tears of anguish on his face." His children were starving to =
death and he was desperate to find food for them. His query was about a =
bit of property that had been left behind by the family in the next =
apartment. The entire family had been butchered a few days earlier, and =
there were no surviving relatives. Under Jewish law, could he take what =
remained of their belongings and sell them to raise cash for food?=20

      Next to such questions, answers seem almost superfluous. (The =
rabbi did not permit the suicide; he allowed the neighbors' property to =
be taken.) What is stunning is that men and women in the throes of such =
hideous suffering and brutality were still concerned about adhering to =
Jewish law. In the lowest depths of the Nazi hell, in a place of terror =
and savagery that most of us cannot fathom, here were human beings who =
refused to relinquish their faith -- who refused even to violate a =
religious precept without first asking if it was allowed.=20

      Violence, humiliation, and hunger will reduce some people to =
animals willing to do anything to survive. The Jews who sought out Rabbi =
Oshry -- like Jews in so many other corners of Nazi Europe -- were not =
reduced but elevated, reinforced in their belief, determined against =
crushing odds to walk in the ways of their fathers.=20

      Some Jews fought the Nazis with guns and sabotage, Rabbi Oshry =
would later say; others fought by persisting in Jewish life. In the end, =
Responsa from the Holocaust is a chronicle of courage and resistance -- =
and a profound inspiration to believers of every faith.=20

      4.   AN ANSWER TO HITLER
      By Paula R. Stern - israelinsider.com - April 19, 2004=20
      I was born on November 9. Kristallnacht. On November 9, 1938, the =
Nazis went on a rampage, burning, destroying, killing. From an early =
age, I felt different from my friends. History weighed heavily on my =
mind. With an interest that bordered on obsession, I read about the =
creation of Israel, about the Holocaust, and finally about the Eichmann =
trial.=20

      Born more than 20 years after the Holocaust, but on a day that =
still brings back the collective pain of a people on the brink of =
disaster, my mother calls me her answer to Hitler. The Holocaust =
happened. Over 6 million Jews were murdered. I am guilty of the same =
crime as they were - that of being Jewish. But my very existence, and =
that of my children, is the best response we can give to Hitler and all =
anti-Semites.=20

      Two of my sons are named for great uncles, murdered by the Nazis. =
One died in Auschwitz shortly after he was married, the second died in =
the forest, too weak to go on. Two of my other children are named for =
Holocaust survivors, orphaned young and scared for life. Despite their =
pain, they survived and went on to marry, build families and lives and =
give my children the special love that only grandparents can give.=20

      When I read some message of hatred saying that the Holocaust is a =
hoax, or that Hitler would have been praised if he had limited himself =
to only killing this kind of Jew or that kind, despair threatens to =
weaken my resolve - but only momentarily.=20

      An anti-Semite in California sends me a note written in German, a =
pathetic attempt to intimidate. An aging Frenchmen writes, "You are a =
malignant parasite, a 'good German' complicit in the war crimes of Nazi =
Israel, and the moment some brave Palestinian blows your brains out, =
it'll be a mitzvah for good people everywhere."=20

      I read the hatred, I hear the message and I understand what those =
who experienced Kristallnacht only suspected. There is a hatred out =
there that will not die. It is a reminder why we must fight harder for =
our country and never weaken ourselves.=20

      You could drown in the hatred. "Death is too good for them. Death =
can not come soon enough to them all. Kill an Israeli settler. Save the =
World." Until you realize that this is what they want. I think of Shaye, =
my husband's grandfather. My husband never knew a grandparent's love =
because Hitler had a master plan. So Shaye was murdered, along with his =
wife and many of his children.=20

      Today, there are six Shayes: one in Israel, one in Canada, three =
in New York, and one in Brazil. They are all strong, devoted Jewish men, =
committed to keeping the memory of Shaye alive.=20

      As Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, arrives here in Israel =
and abroad, we are all faced with the memory and the pain of more than =
six million lives that ended too soon. In Israel, even before the day =
approaches, the radio is filled with the voices of Holocaust survivors, =
desperately trying to tell their stories. Just saying the names of their =
mothers and fathers still makes their voices break in sorrow and it =
isn't hard to hear the tears, or the anger when they mention a younger =
brother or sister, too weak to have survived.=20

      His 4-year-old brother was thirsty and he still remembers his =
older brother trying to comfort the young boy. Soon, soon you will =
drink. Rest now. She never got the chance to say goodbye to her father =
and brother. Her mother kept her alive and forced her to get up and join =
the roll call, or she wouldn't be here now. He remembers his bar mitzvah =
in the ghetto just before being deported and tries to explain to others =
what it was like to find himself orphaned with his brothers and sisters. =
She was in a gas chamber, pulled out at the last minute for a work =
detail. He was in a Russian work camp and doesn't really consider =
himself a survivor, but he lost his mother and father, two brothers and =
countless cousins and aunts and uncles and all his grandparents.=20

      Six candles are lit, six stories told. Czechoslovakia and Hungary. =
Poland and Germany. France, Turkey, Greece, Russia, Denmark and Holland. =
Latvia and Ukraine. And everywhere in between. The scope, the pain, the =
plan. It is hard to remember, impossible to forget.=20

      A trip to Poland raises more questions than it answers. Stand in =
the gas chamber and beg the room to reveal its secrets. Cement walls =
close in on you. Who can guess how many died in the spot where you =
stand. How many ashes, how many shoes in Maidanek. Seventeen thousand =
stones in Treblinka for the communities, but how many stones for the =
people? A picture from my son's bar mitzvah left near the crematoria in =
Auschwitz. Let them see the land of Israel as we have made it today. A =
baby's grave in Chelmno, and bones that still come to the surface in the =
rain. Shmuel died not far from here. Shaye. Raiza. Chana. Yehoshua. =
Benyamin Elimelech. Chaim Lazer. Gabriella. My great-grandmother. My =
great aunts. My husband's grandparents.=20

      To focus on the past is impossible without the strength that can =
be drawn from the present, without the picture of my children I carried =
with me every minute, and without the knowledge that within a few days, =
I would be home in Israel. If we had had our country then, Hitler never =
would have succeeded. The world cannot do what it once did because we =
have changed the world by returning to ourselves.=20

      Early in the morning, in Israel, all over the land, a siren is =
sounded. For two minutes it will wail and all of Israel will stop. It is =
fitting to remember the past and know from where you come. Cars, buses, =
people in the middle of their day, shopping, walking, eating, everything =
stops. It looks like something out of the Twilight Zone, a world =
suddenly frozen in grief, while a nation stops to remember and to mourn. =

      Then, when the siren stops, we get back into our cars, go back to =
our coffee, our shopping, our newspapers. We do not forget, but we live =
on. Stronger for having remembered, better for having survived.=20

      The six Shayes, my children and I, young children here in Israel =
and around the world - we are all answers to Hitler and the anti-Semites =
who still burn synagogues, attack Jews in the streets, and send =
hate-filled messages through the Internet and the mail. By committing =
ourselves to the future, we cannot prevent another Holocaust, but we can =
deny Hitler his victory by holding true to the values he despised.=20

      Hitler did succeed in killing most of European Jewry, but he =
failed in his primary aim. He did not destroy Judaism, and he did not =
destroy Shaye.=20

      As we commemorate Yom HaShoah this year, take a moment to remember =
and mourn. Remember and live. Remember.=20

      <P>What is clear is that men like Ariel Sharon and Binyamin =
Netanyahu=20
      truly believe Israel is better served with them at the helm. What =
also=20
      appears clear is that they are giving little thought to what =
happens to=20
      the nation the day after they are gone.=20
      <P>When that day comes, their actions, and their compromises, will =
be used=20
      as both example and justification for what their successors will =

      <P>If Israel's current Likud leadership uproots the Gaza Jewish =

      <P>We've seen this played out once before.=20
      <P>In 1998, Netanyahu relinquished Israel's control over most of =

      <P>This is a perilous blueprint. If each successive prime minister =
further=20
      erodes Israel's red lines, those lines will eventually converge on =
Tel=20

      <P>Oh but this time, say supporters of the Sharon plan, Israel has =

      <P>Baloney.=20
      <P>The letter Sharon is waving at his Likud Party isn't worth the =

      it's written on.=20
      <P>Not because Bush is a bad and dishonest man, but because one =
day soon -=20

      <P>And then what?=20
      <P>Is there some law that says every future American president =
will be=20
      bound to deal with Israel and the peace process based on Bush's =
letter to=20
      Sharon? Of course not.=20
      <P>The next president will be free to alter US foreign policy =
regarding=20
      the Israeli-Arab conflict to best fit his own world outlook and =
cater to=20
      the political pressures facing him.=20
      <P>So why is Israel willing to cede a blood-bought piece of its =
ancient=20
      homeland for written "guarantees" that have no staying power?=20
      <P>Has the land of Israel become so cheap in the eyes of its =
leaders? Or=20
      does Sharon really believe that his willingness to compromise on =
Gaza will=20
      forever solidify Israel's position in the eyes of the world?=20
      <P>The Prime Minister's own words, spoken four years ago when Ehud =
Barak=20

      <P>"We are a strong people, with weak leaders=85"=20
      <P>Those of us who have read the end of THE book know that the =
children of=20
      Israel will never again be separated from their land - whether by =
outside=20
      forces or by their own leaders.=20
      <P>Holding onto this, we will in prayer and in action oppose all =
efforts=20

      <P>Many people, including Jews, were angry over my recent article, =
"<A=20
      href=3D"http://www.jewishindy.com/print.php?sid=3D3273">Yassin's =
Ticket To=20
      Heaven</A>. " How dare I express "any" joy over the Sheik's =
demise. Many=20
      emails implied that, "I am no different than all the terrorist =
groups who=20
      give out candy and march through the streets in victory after a =
suicide=20
      bombing."=20
      <P>How did this twisted moral equivalence develop where the death =
of evil=20
      is no longer a cause celebre of the decent? Remember that great =
scene=20
      after WWII in Times Square, where hundreds of thousands of people =
were=20
      celebrating the death of Hitler, and the Allied victory over =
Japan?=20
      <P>I am proud that America and Israel have imbibed the =
Judeo-Christian=20
      ethic that encourages fighting evil and killing it. Of course, the =
rest of=20
      the world is trying to make us feel guilty about our values and =
immensely=20
      moral actions. That is why America is hated for liberating Iraq, =
and=20
      Israel is hated for standing up against 5 Arab countries that were =
intent=20
      on destroying it. When these Arab countries became so fearful of =
tiny=20
      Israel after 3 wars, they proceeded to create a new replacement =
pawn=20
      called the Palestinians.=20
      <P>For those Jews filled with rage at me and not at the terrorists =
and=20
      their leaders, they obviously had not attended a synagogue during =
the=20
      month of March. It was probably no coincidence that Sheik Yassin's =
death=20
      coincided with the holiday of Purim, where Jews "joyously" =
commemorate the=20
      death of Haman and his sons.=20
      <P>Whoever has not experienced this holiday, Christian, Jew, =
Muslim or=20
      Secular, is certainly missing an important life experience. Fun is =
the=20
      name of the game and even excessive drinking is encouraged! . =
There is=20
      screaming, yelling and jumping up and down every time the evil =
Haman's=20
      name is mentioned during the Scriptural readings. Yet some Jews =
remarkably=20
      have contempt for my elation over the wonderful deaths of Yassin, =
Rantisi=20
      and any future Hamas terrorist leaders. Coincidentally, the word =
Haman is=20
      only one letter off from Hamas. Perhaps a little divine revelation =
here.=20
      <P>A new, "progressive" European mentality has infected the world =
in the=20
      21st century with an overemphasis on love and compassion. Although =
both of=20
      these traits are important, they must be properly channeled. As =
The Talmud=20
      clearly states, "Those who are compassionate when they should be =
cruel,=20
      will be cruel when they should be compassionate." Just watch the =
cruelest=20
      regimes in the world start blaming Israel at the UN for ridding =
the world=20
      of this evil doctor.=20
      <P>Unlike Jack Straw, the morally confused foreign minister of =
Great=20
      Britain, most Americans m! ake a clear distinction between good =
and evil,=20
      and the killing of innocents. The Straw man sees no difference =
between a=20
      terrorist leader and a democratically elected head of state. It is =
no=20
      wonder that America's Founding Fathers could not wait to get the =
hell out=20
      of "Straw country by the Thames."=20
      <P>Any nation that was inspired to put the word "Great" in front =
of its=20
      name, must have some severe psychological issues with its own =
meager=20
      talents. Other than Tony Blair and a relatively few select =
individuals,=20
      the British have been infected by a morally decaying European =
Union. In=20
      fact, the British are still angry with America over their loss in =
the=20
      Revolutionary War.=20
      <P>Hamas leader Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi publicly announced that he =
would=20
      prefer death by Apache over cardiac arrest. A partnership of God =
and Ariel=20
      Sharon granted him his eternal wish. Rantasi, an ultra-arrogant=20
      pediatrician from Gaza said, "I will not leave one Jew in =
Palestine." He=20
      was absolutely correct because he left 5 million.=20
      <P>Hamas is a terrorist organization that must be dealt with in =
precisely=20
      the same manner as al Qaeda. There is no difference between bin =
Laden and=20
      Rantisi, except Rantisi is now pushing up daisies and will likely =
be pure=20
      fertilizer when bin Laden finally joins him. The elimination of =
these=20
      individuals should bring joy to the hearts of every respectable =
man, woman=20
      and child. The bad guys are dead, just like in the happy endings =
of those=20
      great Hollywood movies.=20
      <P>The destruction of evil is a very healthy concept, yet many =
individuals=20
      seem disturbed by it. Evil is a cancer on the soul. Just like =
oncologists=20
      provide us with a certain joy by destroying tumors and harmful =
cells,=20
      there should be an equivalent emotional high in "burning the evil =
out of=20
      our midst." We do not feel sorry for cancer or terrorists.=20
      <P>Although Rantisi's white automobile was unrecognizable, his =
face looked=20
      much worse. Yet those Hamas warriors "bravely" carried his body =
with its=20
      exposed, deformed head through the streets of Gaza City, so that =
even=20
      little children would be affected by the blood stained imagery.=20
      <P>The terrorist strategy is a death cult that declares victory =
when they=20
      are killed. How is that for an inverted truth? Remember when =
victory meant=20
      that you destroyed the enemy? The evil terrorists cannot face the =
reality=20
      of constantly losing their battles, so they have invented a =
totally new=20
      military strategy that defines victory with defeat. Being sent to =
Club=20
      Med-Heaven to have imaginery relations with 72 virgins has become =
all the=20
      rage.=20
      <P>But why die? Perhaps America and Israel should simply drop =
hundreds of=20
      thousands of Las Vegas travel brochures over these terrorist cells =
and=20
      Islamic marches in Gaza, the West Bank and Iraq. They will begin =
to=20
      realize that is indeed possible to! have these 72 women while they =
are=20
      still alive, along with some great food and other amenities. You =
do not=20
      need to kill Jews. Take the $25,000 that your family receives from =
the=20
      Hamas political arm and instead, book a flight to Vegas.=20
      <P>It is indeed humiliating that the entire Arab and Muslim world =
of 1.2=20
      billion people cannot defeat 5 million Jews in Israel, nor match =
any of=20
      their accomplishments in science, technology, literature or =
medicine. It=20
      is humiliating that Israel actually does what it says it will do =
to=20
      terrorist leaders, while these macho-terrorist leaders talk a big =
game. It=20
      is humiliating that every single Arab and Muslim leader saw =
"themselves"=20
      in the Saddam capture video and the Rantisi funeral procession. It =
is=20
      humiliating to the world that tiny Israel and relatively small =
America=20
      does what it wants throughout the world in fighting and destroying =
evil.=20
      Let the celebration begin!=20

      <P><FONT color=3D#800000 size=3D+2>T</FONT>he order to kill every =
pregnant=20
      Jewish woman had been issued that morning. So when a Nazi guard =
patrolling=20
      the Jewish ghetto in Kovno noticed a pregnant Jew walking past the =
local=20
      hospital, he shot her at point-blank range. She died on the spot.=20
      <P>Hoping to save the baby, some passersby rushed the dead woman =
into the=20
      hospital. An obstetrician determined that she had been in her last =
weeks=20
      of pregnancy, and said that if surgery were performed immediately, =
her=20
      baby might be rescued.=20
      <P>But could such surgery be squared with Jewish law, which is =
stringent=20
      in its concern for the dignity of the dead? If the baby didn't =
make it,=20
      the mother's body would have been mutilated for nothing.=20
      <P>The question was put to Rabbi Ephraim Oshry, a young rabbinical =

      scholar. He didn't hesitate. "When saving a life is involved, we =
are not=20
      concerned with the desecration of the dead," he ruled. Besides, if =
the=20
      murdered mother could speak, wouldn't she welcome the =
"desecration" of her=20
      body if it would assure her baby's survival? He ordered the =
operation to=20
      proceed at once, and the baby was born alive.=20
      <P>Then came a horrifying postscript. "The cruel murderers . . . =
came into=20
      the hospital to write down the name of the murdered woman. . . . =
When they=20
      found the baby alive, their savage fury was unleashed. One of the =
Germans=20
      grabbed the infant and cracked its skull against the wall of the =
hospital=20
      room. Woe unto the eyes that saw this!"=20
      <P>This case from May 1942 was one of many that Rabbi Oshry was =
called=20
      upon to decide during the Nazi occupation of Kovno, Lithuania's=20
      second-largest city. He recorded the heart-rending questions that =
were=20
      brought to him in brief notes on scraps of paper, then buried the =
scraps=20
      in tin cans. Someday, he hoped, those scraps might be found -- =
evidence=20
      that even in the midst of the Nazi inferno there were Jews who =
clung to=20
      their God and His law, refusing to abandon Him even as they must =
have=20
      wondered whether He had abandoned them.=20
      <P>More than 90 percent of Kovno's 40,000 Jews were killed in the=20
      Holocaust -- either by the Germans or by their Lithuanian =
collaborators.=20
      Rabbi Oshry was one of those who survived. After the war he =
retrieved his=20
      notes and began writing them out as full-length rabbinical =
rulings, or=20
      responsa. These were ultimately published in five Hebrew volumes; =
in 1983=20
      a book of excerpts in English -- Responsa from the Holocaust -- =
was=20
      published by Judaica Press.=20
      <P>I read Responsa from the Holocaust soon after it came out, and =
found it=20
      deeply moving. With the approach of Holocaust Remembrance Day, =
which=20
      occurs this year on April 19, I took it down from the bookshelf =
last week=20
      -- and again found it powerful and affecting. The questions laid =
before=20
      Rabbi Oshry can reduce you to tears, but what is really =
extraordinary, I=20
      saw now, was that anyone would care enough to ask such questions =
in the=20
      first place.=20
      <P>In October 1941, "one of the respected members of the =
community" asked=20
      Rabbi Oshry if he could commit suicide. His wife and children had =
been=20
      seized by the Nazis, and he knew that their murder was imminent. =
He feared=20
      that the Nazis would force him to watch as his family was killed, =
and the=20
      prospect of witnessing their deaths was a horror he couldn't bear =
to face.=20
      He begged for permission to take his own life and avoid seeing his =
loved=20
      ones die.=20
      <P>Later that month, the head of another household came to Rabbi =
Oshry=20
      "with tears of anguish on his face." His children were starving to =
death=20
      and he was desperate to find food for them. His query was about a =
bit of=20
      property that had been left behind by the family in the next =
apartment.=20
      The entire family had been butchered a few days earlier, and there =
were no=20
      surviving relatives. Under Jewish law, could he take what remained =
of=20
      their belongings and sell them to raise cash for food?=20
      <P>Next to such questions, answers seem almost superfluous. (The =
rabbi did=20
      not permit the suicide; he allowed the neighbors' property to be =
taken.)=20
      What is stunning is that men and women in the throes of such =
hideous=20
      suffering and brutality were still concerned about adhering to =
Jewish law.=20
      In the lowest depths of the Nazi hell, in a place of terror and =
savagery=20
      that most of us cannot fathom, here were human beings who refused =
to=20
      relinquish their faith -- who refused even to violate a religious =
precept=20
      without first asking if it was allowed.=20
      <P>Violence, humiliation, and hunger will reduce some people to =
animals=20
      willing to do anything to survive. The Jews who sought out Rabbi =
Oshry --=20
      like Jews in so many other corners of Nazi Europe -- were not =
reduced but=20
      elevated, reinforced in their belief, determined against crushing =
odds to=20
      walk in the ways of their fathers.=20
      <P>Some Jews fought the Nazis with guns and sabotage, Rabbi Oshry =
would=20
      later say; others fought by persisting in Jewish life. In the end, =

      Responsa from the Holocaust is a chronicle of courage and =
resistance --=20
      and a profound inspiration to believers of every faith.=20

      <H3>4. &nbsp;&nbsp;<A name=3D4>AN ANSWER TO HITLER</A></H3>By =
Paula R. Stern=20
      - israelinsider.com - April 19, 2004=20
      <P><FONT color=3D#800000 size=3D+2>I</FONT> was born on November =
9.=20
      Kristallnacht. On November 9, 1938, the Nazis went on a rampage, =
burning,=20
      destroying, killing. From an early age, I felt different from my =
friends.=20
      History weighed heavily on my mind. With an interest that bordered =
on=20
      obsession, I read about the creation of Israel, about the =
Holocaust, and=20
      finally about the Eichmann trial.=20
      <P>Born more than 20 years after the Holocaust, but on a day that =
still=20
      brings back the collective pain of a people on the brink of =
disaster, my=20
      mother calls me her answer to Hitler. The Holocaust happened. Over =
6=20
      million Jews were murdered. I am guilty of the same crime as they =
were -=20
      that of being Jewish. But my very existence, and that of my =
children, is=20
      the best response we can give to Hitler and all anti-Semites.=20
      <P>Two of my sons are named for great uncles, murdered by the =
Nazis. One=20
      died in Auschwitz shortly after he was married, the second died in =
the=20
      forest, too weak to go on. Two of my other children are named for=20
      Holocaust survivors, orphaned young and scared for life. Despite =
their=20
      pain, they survived and went on to marry, build families and lives =
and=20
      give my children the special love that only grandparents can give. =

      <P>When I read some message of hatred saying that the Holocaust is =
a hoax,=20
      or that Hitler would have been praised if he had limited himself =
to only=20
      killing this kind of Jew or that kind, despair threatens to weaken =
my=20
      resolve - but only momentarily.=20
      <P>An anti-Semite in California sends me a note written in German, =
a=20
      pathetic attempt to intimidate. An aging Frenchmen writes, "You =
are a=20
      malignant parasite, a 'good German' complicit in the war crimes of =
Nazi=20
      Israel, and the moment some brave Palestinian blows your brains =
out, it'll=20
      be a mitzvah for good people everywhere."=20
      <P>I read the hatred, I hear the message and I understand what =
those who=20
      experienced Kristallnacht only suspected. There is a hatred out =
there that=20
      will not die. It is a reminder why we must fight harder for our =
country=20
      and never weaken ourselves.=20
      <P>You could drown in the hatred. "Death is too good for them. =
Death can=20
      not come soon enough to them all. Kill an Israeli settler. Save =
the=20
      World." Until you realize that this is what they want. I think of =
Shaye,=20
      my husband's grandfather. My husband never knew a grandparent's =
love=20
      because Hitler had a master plan. So Shaye was murdered, along =
with his=20
      wife and many of his children.=20
      <P>Today, there are six Shayes: one in Israel, one in Canada, =
three in New=20
      York, and one in Brazil. They are all strong, devoted Jewish men,=20
      committed to keeping the memory of Shaye alive.=20
      <P>As Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, arrives here in =
Israel and=20
      abroad, we are all faced with the memory and the pain of more than =
six=20
      million lives that ended too soon. In Israel, even before the day=20
      approaches, the radio is filled with the voices of Holocaust =
survivors,=20
      desperately trying to tell their stories. Just saying the names of =
their=20
      mothers and fathers still makes their voices break in sorrow and =
it isn't=20
      hard to hear the tears, or the anger when they mention a younger =
brother=20
      or sister, too weak to have survived.=20
      <P>His 4-year-old brother was thirsty and he still remembers his =
older=20
      brother trying to comfort the young boy. Soon, soon you will =
drink. Rest=20
      now. She never got the chance to say goodbye to her father and =
brother.=20
      Her mother kept her alive and forced her to get up and join the =
roll call,=20
      or she wouldn't be here now. He remembers his bar mitzvah in the =
ghetto=20
      just before being deported and tries to explain to others what it =
was like=20
      to find himself orphaned with his brothers and sisters. She was in =
a gas=20
      chamber, pulled out at the last minute for a work detail. He was =
in a=20
      Russian work camp and doesn't really consider himself a survivor, =
but he=20
      lost his mother and father, two brothers and countless cousins and =
aunts=20
      and uncles and all his grandparents.=20
      <P>Six candles are lit, six stories told. Czechoslovakia and =
Hungary.=20
      Poland and Germany. France, Turkey, Greece, Russia, Denmark and =
Holland.=20
      Latvia and Ukraine. And everywhere in between. The scope, the =
pain, the=20
      plan. It is hard to remember, impossible to forget.=20
      <P>A trip to Poland raises more questions than it answers. Stand =
in the=20
      gas chamber and beg the room to reveal its secrets. Cement walls =
close in=20
      on you. Who can guess how many died in the spot where you stand. =
How many=20
      ashes, how many shoes in Maidanek. Seventeen thousand stones in =
Treblinka=20
      for the communities, but how many stones for the people? A picture =
from my=20
      son's bar mitzvah left near the crematoria in Auschwitz. Let them =
see the=20
      land of Israel as we have made it today. A baby's grave in =
Chelmno, and=20
      bones that still come to the surface in the rain. Shmuel died not =
far from=20
      here. Shaye. Raiza. Chana. Yehoshua. Benyamin Elimelech. Chaim =
Lazer.=20
      Gabriella. My great-grandmother. My great aunts. My husband's=20
      grandparents.=20
      <P>To focus on the past is impossible without the strength that =
can be=20
      drawn from the present, without the picture of my children I =
carried with=20
      me every minute, and without the knowledge that within a few days, =
I would=20
      be home in Israel. If we had had our country then, Hitler never =
would have=20
      succeeded. The world cannot do what it once did because we have =
changed=20
      the world by returning to ourselves.=20
      <P>Early in the morning, in Israel, all over the land, a siren is =
sounded.=20
      For two minutes it will wail and all of Israel will stop. It is =
fitting to=20
      remember the past and know from where you come. Cars, buses, =
people in the=20
      middle of their day, shopping, walking, eating, everything stops. =
It looks=20
      like something out of the Twilight Zone, a world suddenly frozen =
in grief,=20
      while a nation stops to remember and to mourn.=20
      <P>Then, when the siren stops, we get back into our cars, go back =
to our=20
      coffee, our shopping, our newspapers. We do not forget, but we =
live on.=20
      Stronger for having remembered, better for having survived.=20
      <P>The six Shayes, my children and I, young children here in =
Israel and=20
      around the world - we are all answers to Hitler and the =
anti-Semites who=20
      still burn synagogues, attack Jews in the streets, and send =
hate-filled=20
      messages through the Internet and the mail. By committing =
ourselves to the=20
      future, we cannot prevent another Holocaust, but we can deny =
Hitler his=20
      victory by holding true to the values he despised.=20
      <P>Hitler did succeed in killing most of European Jewry, but he =
failed in=20
      his primary aim. He did not destroy Judaism, and he did not =
destroy Shaye.=20

      <P>As we commemorate Yom HaShoah this year, take a moment to =
remember and=20
      mourn. Remember and live. Remember.=20
