      1.   DIVINE IMPLICATIONS OF SHUTTLE DISASTER

      The first thing that sprang into my mind when I heard the sad news =
of the space shuttle disaster was how the Islamic world would react to =
it, and especially Iraq. Having lived and worked with Middle East =
Muslims for over two decades, I knew that many would immediately see it =
as divine judgment upon America and Israel. More importantly, they would =
also view it as strong signal that the two countries will be defeated, =
or at least severely weakened, during the looming showdown with Iraq.=20

      My thoughts were confirmed a few hours later when Israel's popular =
Army Radio announced that Saddam's brutal regime had just issued a =
statement declaring that Columbia's destruction was the "beginning of =
Allah's punishment" upon the USA and its Mideast Zionist ally. The =
statement noted that the Israeli astronaut killed in the shuttle =
breakup, Ilan Ramon, had participated in the 1981 Israeli air force =
destruction of Iraq's nuclear reactor near the town of Osirak. Saddam is =
said to be still seething over that bold action, which thwarted his =
ambition to produce nuclear weapons by the late 1980's.=20

      I will never forget the day in 1981 when Ramon and his fellow =
pilots roared over northern Israel, where I was then living, on their =
way to Iraq. Most world leaders and the United Nations strongly =
condemned Israel's first ever Likud-led government for carrying out the =
"unprovoked attack." Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Defense Minister =
Ariel Sharon were subjected to withering criticism, even from Israeli =
opposition leader Shimon Peres. As far as I know, few world leaders =
later thanked Begin or Sharon for keeping atomic missiles out of =
Saddam's Gulf War arsenal.=20

      Ramon's death is hitting Israelis very hard. His televised =
give-and-take from space with now Prime Minister Sharon was about the =
only bit of good news during January's dreary procession of election =
mudslinging, more Palestinian terrorism and Israeli military responses, =
and pending war in Iraq. For a few minutes every day, the weary public =
could turn their attention to the heavens as newscasters reported the =
latest details of the Columbia mission.=20

      Israeli Jews were particularly touched when their first (and =
last?) astronaut revealed that he had brought with him a drawing of =
earth done by a Jewish boy while imprisoned in the Theresienstadt =
ghetto. He made mention of his mother's captivity at the Auschwitz Nazi =
death camp when telling the Israeli public about it via television from =
the shuttle. He also revealed that he had a miniature Torah scroll from =
the Bergen Belsen camp with him, along with a small Israeli flag and a =
kiddush wine cup. Everyone already knew that he had a microfilm copy of =
the Hebrew Bible, given to him by President Moshe Katsav. Most were =
deeply moved when they heard he had recited the ancient Shema prayer =
("Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God is One God =85") while looking down =
from his celestial perch on a glistening Jerusalem below.=20

      Now, they are preparing to look down through their tears into =
Ramon's grave, just as they have watched and wept as hundreds of =
Israelis were prematurely laid to rest over the past two years as a =
result of sudden, violent explosions. It wasn't supposed to end like =
this.=20

      Is there a divine warning or message to be found in this past =
weekends tragic occurrence? Maybe yes, maybe no. But Columbia's =
unexpected destruction might at least help to remind us that things =
don't always work out the way that we hope or expect them to. This is a =
good thing to keep in mind as American soldiers mass for war against =
Iraq.=20

      I for one find it odd that so many folks in America and Israel =
seem fairly complacent about the pending Mideast battle. Most seem to =
expect nothing more than Round Two of the 1991 short conflict. Trusting =
in America's techno-military might, the average Israeli seems to think =
that little will happen to them this time. That may be so. But we have a =
completely cornered Saddam in 2003, about to lose his seat of power, and =
probably his life. Under these conditions, he will surely release =
whatever demons he can to fight on his behalf, both here in the region =
and around the globe. I also find it odd that the growing prospect of a =
major second front in Korea does not seem to be rattling more cages.=20

      The same Bible that Ilan Ramon carried into space warns us not to =
boast while putting on our armor like those who brag about their =
successes while taking it off. A little more humility might just be in =
order. Along with declaring how inevitable it is that America and her =
allies will be victorious over Saddam and his axis of evil backers, I =
hope President Bush will call for national fasting and prayer before the =
guns start firing. The truth is, we don't always know how things are =
going to turn out.=20

      2.   CHURCH OF THE PEACENIKS

      Religious leaders who oppose the Iraq war.
      I was e-mailing earlier this week with an Episcopal priest friend =
in the military's chaplain corps, asking him how the soldiers he serves =
are bearing up these days, on the march to war with Iraq. He replied =
that most are going to the Middle East with "a resigned determination."=20
      "Our men and women in uniform understand that we can defang this =
evil monster now, and take our licks," the chaplain said. "Or, we can =
defang him later, at a cost which is significantly higher. The odds in =
our favor decrease the longer we delay. To delay will cost Americans in =
body bags."=20

      I then asked how the soldiers feel when they read of religious =
leaders denouncing war with Iraq, the same war they are going to have to =
fight, if it comes to that.=20

      "Betrayed. Disgusted," the chaplain replied. "They find them =
na=EFve, clueless. It causes a rift between the soldier and the faith =
group. The Episcopalian soldiers I serve, for example, were outraged =
during the Gulf War when they saw the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal =
Church on the picket lines in front of the White House."=20

      Well, Episcopalian soldiers, here's some comfort: Peter Lee, the =
bishop of Virginia (and thus the ordinary of Colin Powell, a parishioner =
at St. John's, McLean), has issued a thoughtful, balanced statement =
about a Christian's duty in the impending conflict.=20

      "We pray for peace," the bishop said. "We uphold our leaders and =
our military in our prayers. And in a fallen world, we understand that =
one of the responsibilities of international leadership is to name the =
threats to peace and to participate in removing them, by diplomacy if =
possible, by measured, necessary force as a last resort."=20

      Bishop Lee, a Korean war veteran, neither endorsed nor condemned =
this war, but said only that Christians should pray that our nation =
should do God's will =97 even if the divine will means fighting a just =
war. That seems about right. Yet such a statement puts Bishop Lee at =
odds with his church's presiding bishop, Frank Griswold, a strident =
antiwar activist who recently said that the "world has every right to =
loathe us," and with the Archbishop of Canterbury, who has described a =
U.S.-led war on Iraq as "immoral and illegal."=20

      Across the Tiber, the antiwar sentiment is much the same. Pope =
John Paul II has made several strong statements calling on the United =
States to stand down from war with Iraq. Top cardinals have sharply =
criticized America's march to war, saying that attacking Iraq now would =
violate just-war principles. Cardinal Francis Stafford, the top-ranking =
American in the Vatican, issued Rome's most detailed case against the =
war in this recent statement, in which he said that war can only be =
justified if it is defensive or the threat of attack is "very imminent." =


      "Furthermore, the concept of a 'preventive' war is ambiguous," =
Cardinal Stafford continued. "=85The threat must be clear, active and =
present =97 not future. Nor has the American administration shown that =
all other options before going to war have proven 'impractical or =
ineffective.'"=20

      Though a number of U.S. Catholic bishops and heads of Catholic =
religious orders have taken hard antiwar positions, the bishops' =
conference last November issued a more balanced statement. Though they =
opposed military action, the bishops conceded that "people of good will =
may differ on how to apply just-war norms in particular cases, =
especially when events are moving rapidly and the facts are not =
altogether clear."=20

      It's the same everywhere you look. Heads of mainline Protestant =
denominations in America, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in =
America, the United Church of Christ, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the =
United Methodist Church, are on record opposing the war. The National =
Council of Churches is strongly antiwar (which is like saying Homer =
Simpson is strongly pro-donut). Jewish religious leaders are divided, =
with some supporting the war and others opposed. Some Jewish peaceniks, =
however, hesitate to join the antiwar movement because it has become =
home to overt anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiments. As for the =
Muslims =97 well, do you really have to ask?=20

      In fact, the only major American religious leaders to forthrightly =
back the president are Evangelicals. Richard Land, a top Southern =
Baptist official, joined Chuck Colson three other prominent Evangelicals =
in a supportive letter sent to the White House last fall. But the =
National Association of Evangelicals have declined to make a statement =
on the war, reflecting the ambivalence many congregations feel about =
attacking Iraq.=20

      So: With the overwhelming majority of major religious leaders in =
the West either antiwar or ambivalent about military action in Iraq, =
what are we laypeople to make of all this?=20

      I have heard some say that priests and pastors "ought to get =
behind our president," by which they mean refuse to criticize Bush and =
his war plans as a matter of patriotism. This isn't quite right. =
Religious leaders have a prophetic role to play, speaking truth to power =
when civil authority is in the wrong. Plus, does anybody want ordained =
men and women uncritically baptizing war? The pope was right to call =
war, even just war, a "defeat for humanity."=20

      That said, religious authorities today are reflexively, and =
depressingly, pacifistic on this war, as if every devil can be cast out =
with high-minded talk and good intentions. Some of it has to do with the =
knee-jerk liberalism of the upper clergy in all the American churches, =
whose leaders are generally much more to the left on social matters than =
their congregations. These are the kind of hopeless naifs who take a =
fact-finding tour of Iraq, and return trumpeting news that the citizens =
of this totalitarian dictatorship don't want war. A generation ago, =
their predecessors took "peace tours" of the Soviet Union, and came home =
denouncing America for its warmongering ways.=20

      But there are those who truly believe that the classic criteria =
for a just war have not been met. The problem, though, is that just-war =
theory, which dates from St. Augustine's fifth-century deliberations, is =
in need of updating to account for the dramatically different conditions =
of the present age. (For a more detailed discussion of this, see George =
Weigel's lengthy First Things essay.)=20

      In an era when weapons of mass destruction are possessed by rogue =
states, the very act of having such devastating weapons can legitimately =
be seen as an act of aggression requiring a response. This is even truer =
when it is known that a government supports terrorist surrogates that =
have sought to acquire such weapons. Must America lose New York or =
Washington before she is free to wage war on those who would nuke her, =
if they had the means?=20

      Antiwar clerics have no answer to that question, and no =
responsibility for protecting populations from that fate. History will =
not hold bishops accountable for failing to prevent the annihilation of =
cities. One suspects George W. Bush and Tony Blair wish they slept as =
well these days as peacenik vicars.=20

      Many divines, citing the just-war criterion that insists =
"competent authority" must be in charge of a just war, say that America =
must not act without the United Nations. Leaving aside the risibility of =
theologians tutoring statesmen on the rules of international =
sovereignty, the United Nations is very near to proving its moral =
vacuity, its impotence, and its incompetence as an authority charged =
with keeping international order.=20

      We are told by Christian leaders that America and its allies =
haven't gone far enough to resolve the crisis without resorting to =
military means. After 12 years of sanctions and a demonstrably useless =
inspections regime, and a year of intense diplomacy under the cloud of =
war, all with no effect on Iraq, there is simply nothing left to be =
done. We do not yet know how our religious leaders will react to the =
overwhelming case Colin Powell made this week at the U.N., in which he =
demonstrated conclusively that a dozen years of trying peaceful means of =
coercion has not worked with Iraq. But their credibility is on the line. =


      One antiwar argument the peace pastors use will not be swayed by =
Powell's U.N. speech: that the Iraqi people will suffer terribly in the =
event of an American-led war. That's probably true. But all war brings =
suffering to civilian populations. It's terrible, and an army must do =
its best to minimize it. Yet many more people =97 our own =97 may die if =
Saddam is allowed to remain in power, and develop his weapons of mass =
destruction.=20

      Barring a miracle (for which we all must pray), this nation is =
going to war. "The course of this nation does not depend on the =
decisions of others," the president said to Congress. One might add: Not =
even bishops and pastors. And, considering what some of them are saying, =
perhaps, Thanks be to God.=20

      3.   A JAPANESE VIEW OF THE PALESTINIANS

      If you are so sure that "Palestine, the country, goes back through =
most of recorded history", I expect you to be able to answer a few basic =
questions about that country of Palestine:=20

      When was it founded and by whom?=20

      What were its borders?=20

      What was its capital?=20

      What were its major cities?=20

      What constituted the basis of its economy?=20

      What was its form of government?=20

      Can you name at least one Palestinian leader before Arafat?=20

      Was Palestine ever recognized by a country whose existence, at =
that time or now, leaves no room for interpretation?=20

      What was the language of the country of Palestine?=20

      What was the prevalent religion of the country of Palestine?=20

      What was the name of its currency? Choose any date in history and =
tell what was the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian monetary =
unit against the US dollar, German mark, GB pound, Japanese yen, or =
Chinese yuan on that date.=20

      And, finally, since there is no such country today, what caused =
its demise and when did it occur?=20

      You are lamenting the "low sinking" of a "once proud" nation. =
Please tell me, when exactly was that "nation" proud and what was it so =
proud of?=20

      And here is the least sarcastic question of all: If the people you =
mistakenly call "Palestinians" are anything but generic Arabs collected =
from all over -- or thrown out of -- the Arab world, if they really have =
a genuine ethnic identity that gives them right for self-determination, =
why did they never try to become independent until Arabs suffered their =
devastating defeat in the Six Day War?=20

      I hope you avoid the temptation to trace the modern day =
"Palestinians" to the Biblical Philistines: substituting etymology for =
history won't work here.=20

      The truth should be obvious to everyone who wants to know it. Arab =
countries have never abandoned the dream of destroying Israel; they =
still cherish it today. Having time and again failed to achieve their =
evil goal with military means, they decided to fight Israel by proxy. =
For that purpose, they created a terrorist organization, cynically =
called it "the Palestinian people" and installed it in Gaza, Judea, and =
Samaria. How else can you explain the refusal by Jordan and Egypt to =
unconditionally accept back the "West Bank" and Gaza, respectively?=20

      The fact is, Arabs populating Gaza, Judea, and Samaria have much =
less claim to nationhood than that Indian tribe that successfully =
emerged in Connecticut with the purpose of starting a tax-exempt casino: =
at least that tribe had a constructive goal that motivated them. The so =
called "Palestinians" have only one motivation: the destruction of =
Israel, and in my book that is not sufficient to consider them a nation" =
-- or anything else except what they really are: a terrorist =
organization that will one day be dismantled.=20

      In fact, there is only one way to achieve peace in the Middle =
East. Arab countries must acknowledge and accept their defeat in their =
war against Israel and, as the losing side should, pay Israel =
reparations for the more than 50 years of devastation they have visited =
on it. The most appropriate form of such reparations would be the =
removal of their terrorist organization from the land of Israel and =
accepting Israel's ancient sovereignty over Gaza, Judea, and Samaria.=20

      That will mark the end of the Palestinian people. What are you =
saying again was its beginning?=20

      You are absolutely correct in your understanding of the =
"Palestinians" murderous motives. I am afraid however that you, along =
with 99% of the population of this planet have missed the beginning of =
WWIII (the enemy call it Jihad) quite a few years ago. The siege of the =
US embassy in Tehran in 1979, an event to which the latest Nobel Peace =
Prize winner had so miserably failed to respond, can be very well used =
as the day WWIII stepped out of the pages of the Koran and into the =
current events.=20

      I pray the United States and Israel lead the world to victory in =
this war. Come to think of it, there is no choice, be you a Christian, a =
Jew, or even, believe it or not, a Muslim.=20

      4.   WHAT THE WORLD WOULD LIKE THE PRESIDENT TO SAY

      My fellow Americans:=20

      After consulting with our loyal allies in Europe, speaking with =
United Nations officials, reading major American newspapers, listening =
to National Public Radio, consulting with Hollywood movie stars, and =
meeting with professors from our universities, I have changed my mind.=20

      They are right.=20

      I now realize that the most important goal America and its =
president can pursue is to be liked, hopefully loved, by mankind, and =
especially by France, Germany, China, and the Arab world.=20

      I now realize that we Americans who think in terms of good and =
evil are simpletons. We should think, as the professors do, in =
multicultural terms and, therefore, render no moral judgment over Iraq =
or any other nation except Israel. Who am I to declare any regimes an =
"axis of evil"?=20

      I now realize that it was arrogance to make such a judgment on =
three regimes governed by men whom I should have tried better to =
understand. Now that I realize America's primary goal is to be liked, I =
will never again call any regime evil. In fact, in consultation with the =
presidents and deans of our major universities, I have decided to rename =
the governments of Iraq, Iran and North Korea an Axis of Diversity.=20

      I now realize that the only reason I ever considered putting =
thousands of young American lives in jeopardy was because of oil. I was =
deluded in thinking that Saddam Hussein might use his weapons of =
destruction against vast numbers of innocents, or to think because =
Saddam erased a sovereign nation from the map in 1990, he would =
contemplate doing such a thing again. The French have taught me that the =
way to deal with people whom I used to believe were evil is by giving =
them business contracts.=20

      Yes, all these people knew better than I that I considered =
attacking Iraq only in order to obtain cheap gas for American SUVs. Even =
though it would have cost us far more money to topple Saddam Hussein =
than we would make from Iraqi oil. Even though I could simply have done =
what the French and Russians have done -- make deals with Saddam to buy =
all the oil we want. And even though we publicly promised that after =
Saddam, Iraqi oil will belong to the Iraqi people.=20

      Despite all that, the left somehow recognized that a war against =
Iraq was really only a way to enrich my oil buddies. The left, whom I =
used to foolishly identify with appeasing and defending evil, have =
opened my eyes. They are right that nothing America does is out of a =
sense of mission to lead humanity in confronting evil. That was all a =
cover up for our true motivation -- more wealth. That is why we alone =
stand by Israel -- for all that oil in the Negev. That is why we protect =
Taiwan -- for Taiwan's bounteous natural resources. From now on, our =
moral model must be the Europeans who shape their Middle Eastern =
policies so as to be loved by 200 million Arabs rather than by a few =
million Israelis.=20

      I now realize that America must be guided by Germany with its =
100-year record of moral leadership; by France with nearly as long a =
record of standing up to evil; by our university professors, who almost =
alone in America understand that America and Israel are the world's =
villains; by the United Nations, which was so prescient in doing nothing =
during the Rwanda genocide and today provides more moral light with =
Syria on its Security Council and Libya heading its Human Rights =
Commission; by The New York Times and other newspapers that so =
insightfully attacked President Ronald Reagan for labeling the Soviet =
Union an evil empire; and by China, which I used to identify with =
cultural genocide in Tibet, but thanks to my new desire to be loved, I =
will now regard only as a huge potential source of love and cheap =
imports.=20

      My fellow Americans, I will no longer be calling you "my fellow =
Americans," but rather, "my fellow earthlings" or "my fellow citizens of =
the world." Nor will I conclude this or any future address by asking =
that God bless America. That annoys secular Europe, and if we aim to be =
loved, we can no longer speak in religious terms.=20

      Finally, given my new belief that America's task in the world is =
not to lead but to be loved, I have decided to step down from the =
presidency as soon as Congress and the states pass a constitutional =
amendment allowing Al Gore to be president. He, my predecessor President =
Clinton, and the whole Democratic Party have long believed that =
America's purpose is to be loved. They should be governing.=20

      My fellow world citizens, peace and love.=20

        In the skies today we saw destruction and tragedy. Yet farther =
than we can see there is comfort and hope. In the words of the prophet =

      Flurry of Trees to Rise in Israel in Memory of Lost Astronauts
      By Stephanie Strom - New York Times, February 6, 2003=20
      The Jewish National Fund America has had a surge in sales of trees =
to be planted in Israel in the aftermath of the shuttle disaster.=20

      "It's been incredible," said Russell F. Robinson, the fund's chief =
executive. "Our Web site is literally clogged up because of people =
clicking on to order trees, and the phones are ringing off the hook."=20

      Sales of trees over the phone doubled on Monday and Tuesday, and =
sales over the Web quintupled, Mr. Robinson said. All told, more than =
3,000 trees have been sold in memory of the Columbia astronauts, =
breaking previous records for tree sales, and he said his counterparts =
in other parts of the world were reporting similar sales.=20

      Col. Ilan Ramon, the Israeli astronaut who died on the Columbia, =
mentioned tree planting in a chat from space with Israel's prime =
minister, Ariel Sharon, on Jan. 21. "I would like to see at least 13 =
million or 14 million new trees planted in Israel exactly one year from =
now, on the anniversary of the launching," Colonel Ramon said.=20

      The Jewish National Fund, established in 1901 to buy land in =
Palestine and since designated as the official caretaker of the land of =
Israel, planted 13 trees on Jan. 23 in the Ben Shemen Forest in honor of =
Colonel Ramon and his six colleagues.=20

      Very few additional sales were made after his conversation with =
Mr. Sharon, Mr. Robinson said, but phone sales jumped on Monday after =
the Columbia disintegrated on Saturday.=20

      "His charge was to plant something in the earth, something living, =
and his death has sparked the outpouring that can make that happen," Mr. =
Robinson said.=20

      Gail and Richard Feinstein bought seven of the $18 trees, one in =
honor of each astronaut, after getting an e-mail message from their =
son-in-law's mother suggesting that a purchase would be a good way to =
respond to the disaster. "After 9/11, I gave to the Red Cross, but I =
wouldn't have thought to do that this time," said Ms. Feinstein, who =

      knew that many would immediately see it as divine judgment upon =
America=20
      and Israel. More importantly, they would also view it as strong =
signal=20
      that the two countries will be defeated, or at least severely =
weakened,=20
      during the looming showdown with Iraq.=20
      <P>My thoughts were confirmed a few hours later when Israel's =
popular Army=20
      Radio announced that Saddam's brutal regime had just issued a =
statement=20
      declaring that Columbia's destruction was the "beginning of =
Allah's=20
      punishment" upon the USA and its Mideast Zionist ally. The =
statement noted=20
      that the Israeli astronaut killed in the shuttle breakup, Ilan =
Ramon, had=20
      participated in the 1981 Israeli air force destruction of Iraq's =
nuclear=20
      reactor near the town of Osirak. Saddam is said to be still =
seething over=20
      that bold action, which thwarted his ambition to produce nuclear =
weapons=20
      by the late 1980's.=20
      <P>I will never forget the day in 1981 when Ramon and his fellow =
pilots=20
      roared over northern Israel, where I was then living, on their way =
to=20
      Iraq. Most world leaders and the United Nations strongly condemned =

      Israel's first ever Likud-led government for carrying out the =
"unprovoked=20
      attack." Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Defense Minister Ariel =
Sharon=20
      were subjected to withering criticism, even from Israeli =
opposition leader=20
      Shimon Peres. As far as I know, few world leaders later thanked =
Begin or=20
      Sharon for keeping atomic missiles out of Saddam's Gulf War =
arsenal.=20
      <P>Ramon's death is hitting Israelis very hard. His televised=20
      give-and-take from space with now Prime Minister Sharon was about =
the only=20
      bit of good news during January's dreary procession of election=20
      mudslinging, more Palestinian terrorism and Israeli military =
responses,=20
      and pending war in Iraq. For a few minutes every day, the weary =
public=20
      could turn their attention to the heavens as newscasters reported =
the=20
      latest details of the Columbia mission.=20
      <P>Israeli Jews were particularly touched when their first (and =
last?)=20
      astronaut revealed that he had brought with him a drawing of earth =
done by=20
      a Jewish boy while imprisoned in the Theresienstadt ghetto. He =
made=20
      mention of his mother's captivity at the Auschwitz Nazi death camp =
when=20
      telling the Israeli public about it via television from the =
shuttle. He=20
      also revealed that he had a miniature Torah scroll from the Bergen =
Belsen=20
      camp with him, along with a small Israeli flag and a kiddush wine =
cup.=20
      Everyone already knew that he had a microfilm copy of the Hebrew =
Bible,=20
      given to him by President Moshe Katsav. Most were deeply moved =
when they=20
      heard he had recited the ancient Shema prayer ("Hear oh Israel, =
the Lord=20
      our God is One God =85") while looking down from his celestial =
perch on a=20
      glistening Jerusalem below.=20
      <P>Now, they are preparing to look down through their tears into =
Ramon's=20
      grave, just as they have watched and wept as hundreds of Israelis =
were=20
      prematurely laid to rest over the past two years as a result of =
sudden,=20
      violent explosions. It wasn't supposed to end like this.=20
      <P>Is there a divine warning or message to be found in this past =
weekends=20
      tragic occurrence? Maybe yes, maybe no. But Columbia's unexpected=20
      destruction might at least help to remind us that things don't =
always work=20
      out the way that we hope or expect them to. This is a good thing =
to keep=20
      in mind as American soldiers mass for war against Iraq.=20
      <P>I for one find it odd that so many folks in America and Israel =
seem=20
      fairly complacent about the pending Mideast battle. Most seem to =
expect=20
      nothing more than Round Two of the 1991 short conflict. Trusting =
in=20
      America's techno-military might, the average Israeli seems to =
think that=20
      little will happen to them this time. That may be so. But we have =
a=20
      completely cornered Saddam in 2003, about to lose his seat of =
power, and=20
      probably his life. Under these conditions, he will surely release =
whatever=20
      demons he can to fight on his behalf, both here in the region and =
around=20
      the globe. I also find it odd that the growing prospect of a major =
second=20
      front in Korea does not seem to be rattling more cages.=20
      <P>The same Bible that Ilan Ramon carried into space warns us not =
to boast=20
      while putting on our armor like those who brag about their =
successes while=20
      taking it off. A little more humility might just be in order. =
Along with=20
      declaring how inevitable it is that America and her allies will be =

      victorious over Saddam and his axis of evil backers, I hope =
President Bush=20
      will call for national fasting and prayer before the guns start =
firing.=20
      The truth is, we don't always know how things are going to turn =
out.=20

      Episcopal priest friend in the military's chaplain corps, asking =
him how=20
      the soldiers he serves are bearing up these days, on the march to =
war with=20
      Iraq. He replied that most are going to the Middle East with "a =
resigned=20
      determination."=20
      <P>"Our men and women in uniform understand that we can defang =
this evil=20
      monster now, and take our licks," the chaplain said. "Or, we can =
defang=20
      him later, at a cost which is significantly higher. The odds in =
our favor=20
      decrease the longer we delay. To delay will cost Americans in body =
bags."=20
      <P>I then asked how the soldiers feel when they read of religious =
leaders=20
      denouncing war with Iraq, the same war they are going to have to =
fight, if=20
      it comes to that.=20
      <P>"Betrayed. Disgusted," the chaplain replied. "They find them =
na=EFve,=20
      clueless. It causes a rift between the soldier and the faith =
group. The=20
      Episcopalian soldiers I serve, for example, were outraged during =
the Gulf=20
      War when they saw the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church on =
the=20
      picket lines in front of the White House."=20
      <P>Well, Episcopalian soldiers, here's some comfort: Peter Lee, =
the bishop=20
      of Virginia (and thus the ordinary of Colin Powell, a parishioner =
at St.=20
      John's, McLean), has issued a thoughtful, balanced statement about =
a=20
      Christian's duty in the impending conflict.=20
      <P>"We pray for peace," the bishop said. "We uphold our leaders =
and our=20
      military in our prayers. And in a fallen world, we understand that =
one of=20
      the responsibilities of international leadership is to name the =
threats to=20
      peace and to participate in removing them, by diplomacy if =
possible, by=20
      measured, necessary force as a last resort."=20
      <P>Bishop Lee, a Korean war veteran, neither endorsed nor =
condemned this=20
      war, but said only that Christians should pray that our nation =
should do=20
      God's will =97 even if the divine will means fighting a just war. =
That seems=20
      about right. Yet such a statement puts Bishop Lee at odds with his =

      church's presiding bishop, Frank Griswold, a strident antiwar =
activist who=20
      recently said that the "world has every right to loathe us," and =
with the=20
      Archbishop of Canterbury, who has described a U.S.-led war on Iraq =
as=20
      "immoral and illegal."=20
      <P>Across the Tiber, the antiwar sentiment is much the same. Pope =
John=20
      Paul II has made several strong statements calling on the United =
States to=20
      stand down from war with Iraq. Top cardinals have sharply =
criticized=20
      America's march to war, saying that attacking Iraq now would =
violate=20
      just-war principles. Cardinal Francis Stafford, the top-ranking =
American=20
      in the Vatican, issued Rome's most detailed case against the war =
in this=20
      recent statement, in which he said that war can only be justified =
if it is=20
      defensive or the threat of attack is "very imminent."=20
      <P>"Furthermore, the concept of a 'preventive' war is ambiguous," =
Cardinal=20
      Stafford continued. "=85The threat must be clear, active and =
present =97 not=20
      future. Nor has the American administration shown that all other =
options=20
      before going to war have proven 'impractical or ineffective.'"=20
      <P>Though a number of U.S. Catholic bishops and heads of Catholic=20
      religious orders have taken hard antiwar positions, the bishops'=20
      conference last November issued a more balanced statement. Though =
they=20
      opposed military action, the bishops conceded that "people of good =
will=20
      may differ on how to apply just-war norms in particular cases, =
especially=20
      when events are moving rapidly and the facts are not altogether =
clear."=20
      <P>It's the same everywhere you look. Heads of mainline Protestant =

      denominations in America, including the Evangelical Lutheran =
Church in=20
      America, the United Church of Christ, the Presbyterian Church =
(USA), the=20
      United Methodist Church, are on record opposing the war. The =
National=20
      Council of Churches is strongly antiwar (which is like saying =
Homer=20
      Simpson is strongly pro-donut). Jewish religious leaders are =
divided, with=20
      some supporting the war and others opposed. Some Jewish peaceniks, =

      however, hesitate to join the antiwar movement because it has =
become home=20
      to overt anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiments. As for the =
Muslims =97=20
      well, do you really have to ask?=20
      <P>In fact, the only major American religious leaders to =
forthrightly back=20
      the president are Evangelicals. Richard Land, a top Southern =
Baptist=20
      official, joined Chuck Colson three other prominent Evangelicals =
in a=20
      supportive letter sent to the White House last fall. But the =
National=20
      Association of Evangelicals have declined to make a statement on =
the war,=20
      reflecting the ambivalence many congregations feel about attacking =
Iraq.=20
      <P>So: With the overwhelming majority of major religious leaders =
in the=20
      West either antiwar or ambivalent about military action in Iraq, =
what are=20
      we laypeople to make of all this?=20
      <P>I have heard some say that priests and pastors "ought to get =
behind our=20
      president," by which they mean refuse to criticize Bush and his =
war plans=20
      as a matter of patriotism. This isn't quite right. Religious =
leaders have=20
      a prophetic role to play, speaking truth to power when civil =
authority is=20
      in the wrong. Plus, does anybody want ordained men and women =
uncritically=20
      baptizing war? The pope was right to call war, even just war, a =
"defeat=20
      for humanity."=20
      <P>That said, religious authorities today are reflexively, and=20
      depressingly, pacifistic on this war, as if every devil can be =
cast out=20
      with high-minded talk and good intentions. Some of it has to do =
with the=20
      knee-jerk liberalism of the upper clergy in all the American =
churches,=20
      whose leaders are generally much more to the left on social =
matters than=20
      their congregations. These are the kind of hopeless naifs who take =
a=20
      fact-finding tour of Iraq, and return trumpeting news that the =
citizens of=20
      this totalitarian dictatorship don't want war. A generation ago, =
their=20
      predecessors took "peace tours" of the Soviet Union, and came home =

      denouncing America for its warmongering ways.=20
      <P>But there are those who truly believe that the classic criteria =
for a=20
      just war have not been met. The problem, though, is that just-war =
theory,=20
      which dates from St. Augustine's fifth-century deliberations, is =
in need=20
      of updating to account for the dramatically different conditions =
of the=20
      present age. (For a more detailed discussion of this, see George =
Weigel's=20
      lengthy First Things essay.)=20
      <P>In an era when weapons of mass destruction are possessed by =
rogue=20
      states, the very act of having such devastating weapons can =
legitimately=20
      be seen as an act of aggression requiring a response. This is even =
truer=20
      when it is known that a government supports terrorist surrogates =
that have=20
      sought to acquire such weapons. Must America lose New York or =
Washington=20
      before she is free to wage war on those who would nuke her, if =
they had=20
      the means?=20
      <P>Antiwar clerics have no answer to that question, and no =
responsibility=20
      for protecting populations from that fate. History will not hold =
bishops=20
      accountable for failing to prevent the annihilation of cities. One =

      suspects George W. Bush and Tony Blair wish they slept as well =
these days=20
      as peacenik vicars.=20
      <P>Many divines, citing the just-war criterion that insists =
"competent=20
      authority" must be in charge of a just war, say that America must =
not act=20
      without the United Nations. Leaving aside the risibility of =
theologians=20
      tutoring statesmen on the rules of international sovereignty, the =
United=20
      Nations is very near to proving its moral vacuity, its impotence, =
and its=20
      incompetence as an authority charged with keeping international =
order.=20
      <P>We are told by Christian leaders that America and its allies =
haven't=20
      gone far enough to resolve the crisis without resorting to =
military means.=20
      After 12 years of sanctions and a demonstrably useless inspections =
regime,=20
      and a year of intense diplomacy under the cloud of war, all with =
no effect=20
      on Iraq, there is simply nothing left to be done. We do not yet =
know how=20
      our religious leaders will react to the overwhelming case Colin =
Powell=20
      made this week at the U.N., in which he demonstrated conclusively =
that a=20
      dozen years of trying peaceful means of coercion has not worked =
with Iraq.=20
      But their credibility is on the line.=20
      <P>One antiwar argument the peace pastors use will not be swayed =
by=20
      Powell's U.N. speech: that the Iraqi people will suffer terribly =
in the=20
      event of an American-led war. That's probably true. But all war =
brings=20
      suffering to civilian populations. It's terrible, and an army must =
do its=20
      best to minimize it. Yet many more people =97 our own =97 may die =
if Saddam is=20
      allowed to remain in power, and develop his weapons of mass =
destruction.=20
      <P>Barring a miracle (for which we all must pray), this nation is =
going to=20
      war. "The course of this nation does not depend on the decisions =
of=20
      others," the president said to Congress. One might add: Not even =
bishops=20
      and pastors. And, considering what some of them are saying, =
perhaps,=20

      and Russians have done -- make deals with Saddam to buy all the =

      want. And even though we publicly promised that after Saddam, =

      will belong to the Iraqi people.=20
      <P>Despite all that, the left somehow recognized that a war =
against Iraq=20
      was really only a way to enrich my oil buddies. The left, whom I =
used to=20
      foolishly identify with appeasing and defending evil, have opened =
my eyes.=20
      They are right that nothing America does is out of a sense of =
mission to=20
      lead humanity in confronting evil. That was all a cover up for our =

      motivation -- more wealth. That is why we alone stand by Israel -- =

      that oil in the Negev. That is why we protect Taiwan -- for =
