1. THE TRUE SWEETNESS OF CHRISTMAS=20

      by Bill Murchison - December 24, 2002=20

      The sweetness of Christmas is among the casualties of these =
fraught and frantic times, with war looming and economic anxieties =
prancing about, more clamorous than reindeer on the rooftop. Could we =
finally be getting somewhere?=20

      Many of us -- you can tell us by our wispy hair -- grew up happily =
amid the sweet sounds and aromas of Christmas. These we took for =
granted: sweet Mary; sweet, precious baby ("No crying he makes"); sweet =
shepherds gazing in sweet adoration; sweet singing in the choir; sweet =
smells from the kitchen; sweet Christmas goodnights and awakenings.=20

      This is all very well. It is a part of why so many of the =
areligious and even anti-religious take improbably to the observance of =
Christ's birth. It is all very well, except ... except that Christmas is =
not inherently about sweetness. It is about things harsher and harder, =
many of them much more a part of daily life than sweet, soft hands =
sweetly arranging creche figures.=20

      The Christ child -- who happened to be, as the Gospels and the =
Creeds remind us, the incarnate Son of God -- must have looked immensely =
sweet in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. There was much more to =
the matter, even so. What on Earth was he doing on Earth, God in human =
form? Presenting himself for redemptive purposes, that was what.=20

      Oh? Something was the matter? Why, yes -- quite a few somethings, =
such as murder, fornication, idolatory, lust, robbery, the run of human =
accomplishments, bunched together and given the unappealing name of sin. =

      This was damaging stuff, demanding special intervention. Which was =
exactly what, as the good old King James Version would have it, came to =
pass: intervention of a hugely special, never-to-be-repeated character. =
The Son of God was born in order that he might die violently. What -- =
that sweet baby boy? The very same: all grown up; stripped, mocked, =
pierced, nailed to a cross. That same sweet baby.=20

      It sounds hard. No wonder. The condition of the human race is hard =
-- sometimes hardest just when it seems softest, with science at our =
beck and call, ready to beat back death, enlarge the supply of =
commercial enticements and even think for us.=20

      The God who had shaped and made man in his own image certainly =
knew all this and knew, moreover, what he wanted to do about it. His Son =
would, as it were, take the fall. The sweetness of the beginning would =
turn to pain and death.=20

      This odd paradox would endure. On God's green Earth there would be =
joy, pleasure, laughter, contentment. And it would be good in God's =
eyes, contrary to what various of his servants would contend.=20

      Yet these particular servants -- "puritanical" is the word often =
used to characterize their worldview -- were not wholly wrong. The =
world's leaks and groans and blockages were not, and could never be, =
eliminated with a visit from the divine plumber. The trouble was =
fundamental. It involved an imbalance in the human race itself. This =
meant pain and suffering. It involved -- yes -- war and killing, as well =
as bankruptcies and corruption; likewise poisonous words and malicious =
deeds of all sorts.=20

      In these oh-so-rational times, evil people, both here and abroad, =
would murder the innocent; headlines would chronicle the growing =
possibility of biological warfare.=20

      Days before Christmas, Americans at home swapped bitter words =
about a birthday party salute, while Americans abroad perfected their =
preparations for the likely invasion of Iraq.=20

      A national shortage of sweetness was in evidence. Still, it was =
Christmas, which was what counted in the end.=20

      That sweet baby in the stable, the one who was nailed unsweetly to =
the cross -- how was he called? Among his various names, so one of the =
prophets had said, was Emmanuel -- "God with us." Say it slowly for the =
full effect. God with us now; with us to the end, amid the worst we do =
to one another=20

      A blessed, and merry, Christmas to all.=20

      2.   'MERRY CHRISTMAS': THERE, I SAID IT!=20

      By Barbara Simpson - WorldNetDaily.com - December 24, 2002=20

      Hey gang, I hate to disrupt the secularism, but I think there's =
some reminding necessary. The name of the holiday is Christmas. As in =
Christ. As in Jesus. Remember Him?=20

      He is the reason for the holiday we celebrate on the 25th of =
December. It's the day that Christians observe as the day Christ was =
born.=20

      If you want to be picky, that may or may not have been the exact =
day (probably, it wasn't) but if you are Christian, that doesn't matter. =

      It's interesting how not knowing the exact date doesn't disturb =
Christians, but it seems to get everyone else all bothered.=20

      I never understood why that detail was so important to those who =
didn't believe in the Christian tradition. I always thought that if it =
wasn't your religion =96 well then, stay out of it. Essentially, it's =
none of your business. Since you don't believe, you don't have to =
participate.=20

      Seems to me it goes back to something called freedom of religion.=20

      Not that you are to be free from any exposure to other religious =
beliefs but that you are not required to follow if you choose another =
path to God or salvation or nirvana or nothingness. You decide.=20

      That being said, there's a religious battle in this country.=20

      There's a growing body of thought that if a person is of one =
particular belief, he should have no exposure to any other beliefs.=20

      The rationale and rallying-cry is the so-called "separation of =
church and state." While those words were never used in the =
Constitution, we are guaranteed to be free of a state-sanctioned =
religion in this country.=20

      The fear was that the government would decree what our religious =
beliefs should be. The founding fathers had their fill of that in Europe =
and wanted us (read U.S.) never to suffer that travail.=20

      However, they never said the way to avoid government-sanctioned =
religion was to wipe religion from the face of society. They never =
intended that the cultural basis of religious celebrations be eliminated =
unless in the privacy of a home or house of worship.=20

      Whether you believe He existed or not, whether you follow His =
religious teachings or not, whether you are a member of His Church or =
not =96 the fact remains that Christmas exists because of Him. Because =
of that, it is, of its very nature, a religious holiday.=20

      But this isn't just the age of secularism, it's also the age of =
the lawsuit. More quickly than you can say "offended," you can be sued.=20

      That threat has done more to put religious customs and beliefs on =
the run than almost any state-sanctioned religion. In fact, what's =
happening is laying the groundwork for a state-sponsored "non-religion." =

      It's ironic that the first definition of "offend" in my Webster's =
is "to transgress the moral or divine law." Darn. There's religion =
again.=20

      It's also interesting that those most supportive of diversity and =
tolerance in schools and civic life (whether voluntary or forced by =
government edict, namely new laws) are those who are the most =
intolerant.=20

      The definition of tolerance is "sympathy or indulgence for beliefs =
or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own." Yet if they =
don't like your religion, they want it removed from view because they're =
"offended."=20

      The result of unspoken legal threats is seen in schools and towns =
everywhere. Anything that smacks of religion or Christianity is =
verboten. Crosses are removed. Nativity scenes gone. Christmas carols =
with any mention of religion or Christ are banned. Bibles can't be read =
or quoted. Teachers ordered never to mention the religious aspect of =
Christmas. Pageants stripped of any religious connotation.=20

      Advertising and store displays are totally secular with the word =
"Christmas" banished. Store clerks are ordered not to say "Merry =
Christmas." The going phrase is "Happy Holiday, everyone." What holiday? =
Don't ask.=20

      Santa Claus is seen, although it's a matter of time before it =
sinks in to the "offended" that he's really Saint Nicholas. (Oops, =
there's religion again.) When that happens, good-bye Santa.=20

      Curiously, Jewish menorahs as well as symbols of Kwanzaa, Islam, =
paganism and other religious worship are not considered "religious" =
symbols and are OK.=20

      Actually, it's not really curious. Examine the goal. It's simple. =
Reduce and eliminate any mention of Christianity.=20

      The reality of this is an attack on the foundation of our laws, =
morality and system of government. Remove the religious/moral aspect and =
anything goes. There's no right and wrong and individuals are paramount. =
Sound familiar? We're more than half-way there.=20

      Unfortunately, the message to children of being "offended" at the =
mention of God in a public place and ignoring the religious basis of our =
history is to create another generation of self-centered, =
self-indulgent, pampered, amoral individuals. Didn't we learn from the =
'60s?=20

      Don't we see the chaotic results on our society. Isn't it time to =
fight back?=20

      Yes. But first, celebrate Christmas. The birth of Christ. The =
basis for peace on earth and good will to men. Remember the message. And =
tomorrow, defend your faith.=20

      =20

      3. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO MY JEWISH MOTHER=20

      By Dave Konig, December 22, 2002 - National Review=20

      Growing up with a menorah and a tree.
      Like most Jewish mothers, mine had an almost supernatural talent =
for saying just the right thing in any given situation to drive me =
completely insane. One example (chosen at random from a storehouse of =
several million): When I called her with the news that, after years of =
struggling in the outer regions of show business, I had finally landed a =
big role on Broadway, she responded, "Well, you keep at it dear, things =
should work out eventually.=85"=20
      Don't get me wrong, she wasn't a pessimist. In fact, she always =
looked on the bright side =97 it's just that her brain worked faster =
than her mouth and sometimes her thoughts came out a little, well, =
fershimilled. She was a confounding, but fascinating, woman. =
Opinionated, compulsive, talkative, extremely bright, and extremely =
short. She read voraciously and indiscriminately; always working on =
several books at once. And, as if that wasn't enough simultaneous =
intellectual stimulation, she played elaborate word games with the books =
she was reading. As she read, she would write down the first word of the =
first paragraph of each page on a little memo pad and then proceed to =
make little checkmarks for each time that word would appear in the rest =
of the book. Her entire life she was always surrounded by hundreds of =
books and thousands of little memo pads filled with words and =
checkmarks.=20

      Her spiritual life was equally peripatetic: She was Jewish, we =
were Jewish, but she had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a core =
restlessness that led to a lifelong self-education in theology =97 and a =
more-than-occasional dabbling in alternative spiritual paths. For a =
while she was very interested in Christian Science, the writings of =
Bishop Fulton Sheen were always comforting to her, and, as an =
on-again-off-again member of Overeaters Anonymous, she had a more than =
passing acquaintance with the 12 steps of recovery.=20

      For her, none of this was ever a substitute for Judaism, or a =
rejection of it. To the contrary, she felt it made her a better Jew; the =
more she learned and understood about the religions of the world, great =
and small, the closer she felt to God and the more tolerant she was of =
her fellow man =97 and wasn't that the whole point of being a good Jew?=20

      My mother loved Christmas. My parents believed, quite simply, that =
Christmas was a heck of a lot of fun =97 especially for kids =97 and we =
weren't about to let a little thing like the fact that we were Jewish =
get in the way of the fun! So, like a good All-American Jewish family, =
we lit the Hanukah menorah for eight nights, then got up early on =
Christmas Day to open the presents Santa Claus had left under the =
Christmas tree. We wished each other "Merry Christmas" (for those under =
30, "Merry Christmas" was a happy phrase =97 people used to say it to =
each other all the time, up until a few years ago).=20

      A few years ago my mother contracted colon cancer. She was only 67 =
=97 it was a bad break for a great gal who had a tough life. In the end =
she was cared for 'round the clock in an incredible facility: Mary =
Manning Walsh on the east side of Manhattan. She died on the sixth =
floor, loved and comforted and eased into the next life by some of the =
most wonderful people on earth: Gloria, George, Nurse Jackson, Conchita, =
Theresa. And, of course, prayed for by Sister Noreen and all the loving =
nuns and priests at this Catholic institution.=20

      It's been five years now. Like a good Jewish boy I think of her at =
this time of year. Merry Christmas, Mom.=20

      =20

      4.   THE KING OF CHRISTMAS=20

      By Vox Day - WorldNetDaily.com - December 23, 2002=20

      I love everything about Christmas. The white snow, the rainbow of =
lights and the dawn vision of presents piled under the tree. It is a =
happy time for my family, a time of joy. Some of our most cherished =
memories stem from this time of year. But we also remember the =
inspiration for the celebration, a truth both wonderful and grim.=20

      We remember that Jesus Christ had to come into this fallen world =
because it was, and is, under the rule of a cruel and malevolent prince, =
who tempted Him, who slew Him when He would not submit, and who watched =
in helpless horror as He rose again in power.=20

      The world is still under the rule of that cruel prince, the =
results of which can be seen every day in the news. Murder, war and =
tyranny continue to oppress many millions throughout the world, but we =
who refuse to submit to the ruler of this world are no longer bound by =
him, for we claim that truth that sets us free, the resurrection of the =
Lord Jesus Christ.=20

      Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the true king of Man, yet I remain =
convinced His Father is a libertarian. Not only did He send His Son to =
set us free, but He allows us, no, He forces us to decide between =
acknowledging His Son or seating ourselves upon the throne of our own =
lives. And that freedom of choice, in the end, is the central liberty; =
it is the only liberty that matters.=20

      A friend once asked how I could be so cheerful while America rots =
from within and endures attack from without. The answer is that despite =
my love for America and my passionate allegiance to the ideas upon which =
it was constructed, I know that its fate is immaterial. Our country, our =
homes and even our lives are all things of shadow which will one day =
disappear in the light of the glory of Jesus Christ.=20

      Despair is the natural state of the thinking man. This is why =
intellectuals grasp so readily at even the feeblest straw promising hope =
for Heaven on Earth. But there will be neither peace nor harmony until =
the revolution begun in a Bethlehem manger is complete, until the =
murderous ruler of this world is finally deposed. Then, at last, there =
will be peace and goodwill to men.=20

      Merry Christmas.=20

      =20

      5.   HAPPY CHRISTMAS=20

      National Post - December 24, 2002=20

      Over the past two weeks, the National Post has chronicled the =
lengths to which many Canadian governments and institutions have gone to =
turn Christmas into another empty, generic holiday. In Montreal, a =
private school has excised all references to the birth of Jesus Christ =
from its annual Christmas concert, opting instead for secular seasonal =
songs. In Edmonton, organizers of Operation Christmas Child -- a =
Christian program that sends gifts to needy children overseas -- were =
accused of serving as a front for evangelists. In Toronto, the city's =
Christmas tree was in danger of becoming a "holiday tree" -- which would =
have been only slightly less lame than the "multicultural tree" that =
surfaced in Manitoba's legislature in the mid-1990s (and has now =
thankfully been retired).=20

      Across the country, businesses and politicians have removed any =
mention of the actual occasion from their Christmas cards, opting =
instead for "Season's Greetings," sales staff at GAP stores have been =
instructed to offer only "Happy Holidays" to customers, and television =
stations have scrapped their traditional Christmas parties in favour of =
February get-togethers. The list goes on; indeed, we likely could have =
filled our entire newspaper with such stories.=20

      And yet, despite the best efforts of these unwitting grinches, the =
spirit of Christmas remains strong. One of the season's most touching =
stories is that of Andrew Shinewald, an observant Jew so taken by the =
Christmas spirit that he dresses as Santa Claus for patients at the =
Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. His example shows that the holiday's =
religious overtones need not exclude people of other faiths. The ideals =
venerated at Christmas time -- generosity, peace, family -- are =
important to everyone, even atheists.=20

      While Christmas is not the most important date on the Christian =
calendar -- Easter has that distinction -- it is generally the year's =
most important celebration. It is a time to celebrate life, spend time =
with one's family and exchange gifts. It is also about instilling in our =
children a sense of wonderment, not just at the notion of a jolly man on =
a sleigh, but also at the Christmas tree, the annual feast, lights that =
decorate our streets, the beauty of a white Christmas -- all magical =
symbols of a season that always ends too soon. Christmas is one of the =
few things in our society that requires neither amendment nor =
improvement. So have a "Merry Christmas," and don't let anybody tell you =
otherwise.=20

Many of us -- you can tell us by our wispy hair -- grew up =
happily amid=20
      the sweet sounds and aromas of Christmas. These we took for =
granted: sweet=20
      Mary; sweet, precious baby ("No crying he makes"); sweet shepherds =
gazing=20
      in sweet adoration; sweet singing in the choir; sweet smells from =
the=20
      kitchen; sweet Christmas goodnights and awakenings.=20

This is all very well. It is a part of why so many of the =
areligious=20
      and even anti-religious take improbably to the observance of =
Christ's=20
      birth. It is all very well, except ... except that Christmas is =
not=20
      inherently about sweetness. It is about things harsher and harder, =
many of=20
      them much more a part of daily life than sweet, soft hands sweetly =

      arranging creche figures.=20

The Christ child -- who happened to be, as the Gospels and the =
Creeds=20
      remind us, the incarnate Son of God -- must have looked immensely =
sweet in=20
      swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. There was much more to the =
matter,=20
      even so. What on Earth was he doing on Earth, God in human form?=20
      Presenting himself for redemptive purposes, that was what.=20

Oh? Something was the matter? Why, yes -- quite a few =
somethings, such=20
      as murder, fornication, idolatory, lust, robbery, the run of human =

      accomplishments, bunched together and given the unappealing name =
of sin.=20

This was damaging stuff, demanding special intervention. Which =
was=20
      exactly what, as the good old King James Version would have it, =
came to=20
      pass: intervention of a hugely special, never-to-be-repeated =
character.=20
      The Son of God was born in order that he might die violently. What =
-- that=20
      sweet baby boy? The very same: all grown up; stripped, mocked, =
pierced,=20
      nailed to a cross. That same sweet baby.=20

It sounds hard. No wonder. The condition of the human race is =
hard --=20
      sometimes hardest just when it seems softest, with science at our =
beck and=20
      call, ready to beat back death, enlarge the supply of commercial=20
      enticements and even think for us.=20

The God who had shaped and made man in his own image certainly =
knew all=20
      this and knew, moreover, what he wanted to do about it. His Son =
would, as=20
      it were, take the fall. The sweetness of the beginning would turn =
to pain=20
      and death.=20

This odd paradox would endure. On God's green Earth there would =
be joy,=20
      pleasure, laughter, contentment. And it would be good in God's =
eyes,=20
      contrary to what various of his servants would contend.=20

Yet these particular servants -- "puritanical" is the word =
often used=20
      to characterize their worldview -- were not wholly wrong. The =
world's=20
      leaks and groans and blockages were not, and could never be, =
eliminated=20
      with a visit from the divine plumber. The trouble was fundamental. =
It=20
      involved an imbalance in the human race itself. This meant pain =
and=20
      suffering. It involved -- yes -- war and killing, as well as =
bankruptcies=20
      and corruption; likewise poisonous words and malicious deeds of =
all sorts.=20

In these oh-so-rational times, evil people, both here and =
abroad, would=20
      murder the innocent; headlines would chronicle the growing =
possibility of=20
      biological warfare.=20

Days before Christmas, Americans at home swapped bitter words =
about a=20
      birthday party salute, while Americans abroad perfected their =
preparations=20
      for the likely invasion of Iraq.=20

A national shortage of sweetness was in evidence. Still, it was =

      Christmas, which was what counted in the end.=20

That sweet baby in the stable, the one who was nailed unsweetly =
to the=20
      cross -- how was he called? Among his various names, so one of the =

      prophets had said, was Emmanuel -- "God with us." Say it slowly =
for the=20
      full effect. God with us now; with us to the end, amid the worst =
we do to=20
      one another=20

gang, I hate to=20
      disrupt the secularism, but I think there's some reminding =
necessary. The=20
      name of the holiday is Christmas. As in Christ. As in Jesus. =
Remember Him?=20

He is the reason for the holiday we celebrate on the 25th of =
December.=20
      It's the day that Christians observe as the day Christ was born.=20

If you want to be picky, that may or may not have been the =
exact day=20
      (probably, it wasn't) but if you are Christian, that doesn't =
matter.=20

It's interesting how not knowing the exact date doesn't disturb =

      Christians, but it seems to get everyone else all bothered.=20

I never understood why that detail was so important to those =
who didn't=20
      believe in the Christian tradition. I always thought that if it =
wasn't=20
      your religion =96 well then, stay out of it. Essentially, it's =
none of your=20
      business. Since you don't believe, you don't have to participate.=20

Seems to me it goes back to something called freedom of =
religion.=20

Not that you are to be free from any exposure to other =
religious=20
      beliefs but that you are not required to follow if you choose =
another path=20
      to God or salvation or nirvana or nothingness. You decide.=20

That being said, there's a religious battle in this country.=20

There's a growing body of thought that if a person is of one =
particular=20
      belief, he should have no exposure to any other beliefs.=20

The rationale and rallying-cry is the so-called "separation of =
church=20
      and state." While those words were never used in the Constitution, =
we are=20
      guaranteed to be free of a state-sanctioned religion in this =
country.=20

The fear was that the government would decree what our =
religious=20
      beliefs should be. The founding fathers had their fill of that in =
Europe=20
      and wanted us (read U.S.) never to suffer that travail.=20

However, they never said the way to avoid government-sanctioned =

      religion was to wipe religion from the face of society. They never =

      intended that the cultural basis of religious celebrations be =
eliminated=20
      unless in the privacy of a home or house of worship.=20

Whether you believe He existed or not, whether you follow His =
religious=20
      teachings or not, whether you are a member of His Church or not =
=96 the fact=20
      remains that Christmas exists because of Him. Because of that, it =
is, of=20
      its very nature, a religious holiday.=20

But this isn't just the age of secularism, it's also the age of =
the=20
      lawsuit. More quickly than you can say "offended," you can be =
sued.=20

That threat has done more to put religious customs and beliefs =
on the=20
      run than almost any state-sanctioned religion. In fact, what's =
happening=20
      is laying the groundwork for a state-sponsored "non-religion."=20

It's ironic that the first definition of "offend" in my =
Webster's is=20
      "to transgress the moral or divine law." Darn. There's religion =
again.=20

It's also interesting that those most supportive of diversity =
and=20
      tolerance in schools and civic life (whether voluntary or forced =
by=20
      government edict, namely new laws) are those who are the most =
intolerant.=20

The definition of tolerance is "sympathy or indulgence for =
beliefs or=20
      practices differing from or conflicting with one's own." Yet if =
they don't=20
      like your religion, they want it removed from view because they're =

      "offended."=20

The result of unspoken legal threats is seen in schools and =
towns=20
      everywhere. Anything that smacks of religion or Christianity is =
verboten.=20
      Crosses are removed. Nativity scenes gone. Christmas carols with =
any=20
      mention of religion or Christ are banned. Bibles can't be read or =
quoted.=20
      Teachers ordered never to mention the religious aspect of =
Christmas.=20
      Pageants stripped of any religious connotation.=20

Advertising and store displays are totally secular with the =
word=20
      "Christmas" banished. Store clerks are ordered not to say "Merry=20
      Christmas." The going phrase is "Happy Holiday, everyone." What =
holiday?=20
      Don't ask.=20

Santa Claus is seen, although it's a matter of time before it =
sinks in=20
      to the "offended" that he's really Saint Nicholas. (Oops, there's =
religion=20
      again.) When that happens, good-bye Santa.=20

Curiously, Jewish menorahs as well as symbols of Kwanzaa, =
Islam,=20
      paganism and other religious worship are not considered =
"religious"=20
      symbols and are OK.=20

Actually, it's not really curious. Examine the goal. It's =
simple.=20
      Reduce and eliminate any mention of Christianity.=20

The reality of this is an attack on the foundation of our laws, =

      morality and system of government. Remove the religious/moral =
aspect and=20
      anything goes. There's no right and wrong and individuals are =
paramount.=20
      Sound familiar? We're more than half-way there.=20

Unfortunately, the message to children of being "offended" at =
the=20
      mention of God in a public place and ignoring the religious basis =
of our=20
      history is to create another generation of self-centered, =
self-indulgent,=20
      pampered, amoral individuals. Didn't we learn from the '60s?=20

Don't we see the chaotic results on our society. Isn't it time =
to fight=20
      back?=20

Yes. But first, celebrate Christmas. The birth of Christ. The =
basis for=20
      peace on earth and good will to men. Remember the message. And =
tomorrow,=20
      defend your faith.=20

almost=20
      supernatural talent for saying just the right thing in any given =
situation=20
      to drive me completely insane. One example (chosen at random from =
a=20
      storehouse of several million): When I called her with the news =
that,=20
      after years of struggling in the outer regions of show business, I =
had=20
      finally landed a big role on Broadway, she responded, "Well, you =
keep at=20
      it dear, things should work out eventually.=85"=20

Don't get me wrong, she wasn't a pessimist. In fact, she always =
looked=20
      on the bright side =97 it's just that her brain worked faster than =
her mouth=20
      and sometimes her thoughts came out a little, well, fershimilled. =
She was=20
      a confounding, but fascinating, woman. Opinionated, compulsive, =
talkative,=20
      extremely bright, and extremely short. She read voraciously and=20
      indiscriminately; always working on several books at once. And, as =
if that=20
      wasn't enough simultaneous intellectual stimulation, she played =
elaborate=20
      word games with the books she was reading. As she read, she would =
write=20
      down the first word of the first paragraph of each page on a =
little memo=20
      pad and then proceed to make little checkmarks for each time that =
word=20
      would appear in the rest of the book. Her entire life she was =
always=20
      surrounded by hundreds of books and thousands of little memo pads =
filled=20
      with words and checkmarks.=20

Her spiritual life was equally peripatetic: She was Jewish, we =
were=20
      Jewish, but she had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a =
core=20
      restlessness that led to a lifelong self-education in theology =97 =
and a=20
      more-than-occasional dabbling in alternative spiritual paths. For =
a while=20
      she was very interested in Christian Science, the writings of =
Bishop=20
      Fulton Sheen were always comforting to her, and, as an =
on-again-off-again=20
      member of Overeaters Anonymous, she had a more than passing =
acquaintance=20
      with the 12 steps of recovery.=20

For her, none of this was ever a substitute for Judaism, or a =
rejection=20
      of it. To the contrary, she felt it made her a better Jew; the =
more she=20
      learned and understood about the religions of the world, great and =
small,=20
      the closer she felt to God and the more tolerant she was of her =
fellow man=20
      =97 and wasn't that the whole point of being a good Jew?=20

My mother loved Christmas. My parents believed, quite simply, =
that=20
      Christmas was a heck of a lot of fun =97 especially for kids =97 =
and we=20
      weren't about to let a little thing like the fact that we were =
Jewish get=20
      in the way of the fun! So, like a good All-American Jewish family, =
we lit=20
      the Hanukah menorah for eight nights, then got up early on =
Christmas Day=20
      to open the presents Santa Claus had left under the Christmas =
tree. We=20
      wished each other "Merry Christmas" (for those under 30, "Merry =
Christmas"=20
      was a happy phrase =97 people used to say it to each other all the =
time, up=20
      until a few years ago).=20

A few years ago my mother contracted colon cancer. She was only =
67 =97 it=20
      was a bad break for a great gal who had a tough life. In the end =
she was=20
      cared for 'round the clock in an incredible facility: Mary Manning =
Walsh=20
      on the east side of Manhattan. She died on the sixth floor, loved =
and=20
      comforted and eased into the next life by some of the most =
wonderful=20
      people on earth: Gloria, George, Nurse Jackson, Conchita, Theresa. =
And, of=20
      course, prayed for by Sister Noreen and all the loving nuns and =
priests at=20
      this Catholic institution.=20

It's been five years now. Like a good Jewish boy I think of her =
at this=20
      time of year. Merry Christmas, Mom.=20

time of=20
      joy. Some of our most cherished memories stem from this time of =
year. But=20
      we also remember the inspiration for the celebration, a truth both =

      wonderful and grim.=20

We remember that Jesus Christ had to come into this fallen =
world=20
      because it was, and is, under the rule of a cruel and malevolent =
prince,=20
      who tempted Him, who slew Him when He would not submit, and who =
watched in=20
      helpless horror as He rose again in power.=20

The world is still under the rule of that cruel prince, the =
results of=20
      which can be seen every day in the news. Murder, war and tyranny =
continue=20
      to oppress many millions throughout the world, but we who refuse =
to submit=20
      to the ruler of this world are no longer bound by him, for we =
claim that=20
      truth that sets us free, the resurrection of the Lord Jesus =
Christ.=20

Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the true king of Man, yet I remain=20
      convinced His Father is a libertarian. Not only did He send His =
Son to set=20
      us free, but He allows us, no, He forces us to decide between=20
      acknowledging His Son or seating ourselves upon the throne of our =
own=20
      lives. And that freedom of choice, in the end, is the central =
liberty; it=20
      is the only liberty that matters.=20

A friend once asked how I could be so cheerful while America =
rots from=20
      within and endures attack from without. The answer is that despite =
my love=20
      for America and my passionate allegiance to the ideas upon which =
it was=20
      constructed, I know that its fate is immaterial. Our country, our =
homes=20
      and even our lives are all things of shadow which will one day =
disappear=20
      in the light of the glory of Jesus Christ.=20

Despair is the natural state of the thinking man. This is why=20
      intellectuals grasp so readily at even the feeblest straw =
promising hope=20
      for Heaven on Earth. But there will be neither peace nor harmony =
until the=20

National Post - December 24, 2002=20

Over the past two weeks, =
the=20
      National Post has chronicled the lengths to which many Canadian=20
      governments and institutions have gone to turn Christmas into =
another=20
      empty, generic holiday. In Montreal, a private school has excised =
all=20
      references to the birth of Jesus Christ from its annual Christmas =
concert,=20
      opting instead for secular seasonal songs. In Edmonton, organizers =
of=20
      Operation Christmas Child -- a Christian program that sends gifts =
to needy=20
      children overseas -- were accused of serving as a front for =
evangelists.=20
      In Toronto, the city's Christmas tree was in danger of becoming a =
"holiday=20
      tree" -- which would have been only slightly less lame than the=20
      "multicultural tree" that surfaced in Manitoba's legislature in =
the=20
      mid-1990s (and has now thankfully been retired).=20

Across the country, businesses and politicians have removed any =
mention=20
      of the actual occasion from their Christmas cards, opting instead =
for=20
      "Season's Greetings," sales staff at GAP stores have been =
instructed to=20
      offer only "Happy Holidays" to customers, and television stations =
have=20
      scrapped their traditional Christmas parties in favour of February =

      get-togethers. The list goes on; indeed, we likely could have =
filled our=20
      entire newspaper with such stories.=20

And yet, despite the best efforts of these unwitting grinches, =
the=20
      spirit of Christmas remains strong. One of the season's most =
touching=20
      stories is that of Andrew Shinewald, an observant Jew so taken by =
the=20
      Christmas spirit that he dresses as Santa Claus for patients at =
the=20
      Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. His example shows that the =
holiday's=20
      religious overtones need not exclude people of other faiths. The =
ideals=20
      venerated at Christmas time -- generosity, peace, family -- are =
important=20
      to everyone, even atheists.=20

While Christmas is not the most important date on the Christian =

      calendar -- Easter has that distinction -- it is generally the =
year's most=20
      important celebration. It is a time to celebrate life, spend time =
with=20
      one's family and exchange gifts. It is also about instilling in =
our=20
      children a sense of wonderment, not just at the notion of a jolly =
man on a=20
      sleigh, but also at the Christmas tree, the annual feast, lights =
that=20
      decorate our streets, the beauty of a white Christmas -- all =
magical=20
      symbols of a season that always ends too soon. Christmas is one of =
the few=20
      things in our society that requires neither amendment nor =
improvement. So=20
      have a "Merry Christmas," and don't let anybody tell you =
otherwise.=20
