2. SHOULD ISRAEL RETALIATE?=20
By Avi Davis=20
There is a story told about Yitzhak Shamir=92s first encounter =
with James Baker immediately following the Gulf War. Approaching the =
Israeli prime minister with his hand outstretched, Baker, not known for =
his affability, exuded: Mr. Prime Minister, America, owes you a debt of =
gratitude for your perseverance in not retaliating against Iraq. Shamir =
looked at the hand then up into Baker=92s eyes and said tersely: You =
should know, Mr. Secretary, that being hit by 39 scud missiles makes a =
people look at the world in a very different way .=20
Although perhaps apocryphal, the statement nevertheless speaks =
volumes about Israel=92s attitude to the issue of retaliation. No one in =
Israel needs to be reminded of the frustration of absorbing six weeks of =
attacks, spending hours locked in dank, lightless bomb shelters, donning =
gas masks for protection and the feeling that they were paying the price =
for a war they did not start and for attacks to which they could not =
respond.=20
It cannot be too surprising then, that Israel is holding its cards =
close to its chest when it comes to assurances about its retaliatory =
intentions. During the Gulf War the first George Bush, according to then =
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Arens, did not request, but actually =
demanded that the Shamir Government not retaliate. Placating Israeli =
fears, Bush=92s military men assured Shamir that the Scud missile =
launchers would be found and destroyed. But the U.S. military, despite =
its reputed sophistication, was unable to locate even one of the =
launchers and the Scuds continued to batter the Israeli heartland.=20
Notwithstanding this catastrophe of reconnaissance, the United =
States failed, abjectly, to fulfill what it had more or less assured =
Israel as its primary military objective - the elimination of the Iraqi =
menace. The Shamir government had accepted the Bush calculation that =
Saddam Hussein would fall from power and if not removed by internal =
putsch, then would be delivered by American military intervention. But a =
decade later Saddam Hussein is not only still in power, but can be found =
fomenting terrorism in Israel itself though both a network of =
provocateurs and a system of cash back rewards for homicide bombers.=20
The Israelis also expected political rewards to follow their =
willing sacrifices on behalf of the U.S. military campaign. It is =
forgotten by no one that the last Bush administration was the most =
unfriendly to Israel since the country=92s founding. Shamir had =
virtually become person non grata at the White House. When in 1990, =
(prior to the Gulf War) James Baker famously admonished the Israelis: =
call us when you are serious about peace and repeated the identification =
of settlements as the major obstacle to achieving it , he turned US- =
Israeli relations into a bitter slogging match between lobbyists. Many =
in the Israeli political establishment therefore felt certain that =
compliance with the Bush Administration=92s demands would win them =
points in Washington and would convert a cold shoulder into a warm =
embrace.=20
But not even this panned out. The first Bush Administration, flush =
with confidence in its new diplomatic muscle, railroaded an unwilling =
Shamir into a peace conference in Madrid. The conference was hailed as a =
diplomatic breakthrough, attended by the President himself. But it was =
far from achieving anything substantive. While it did bring the =
antagonists face to face, it also succeeded in revealing the depth of =
hatred for Israel (and, if we are to be truthful, for the U.S. itself ) =
in the Arab world. In the end, Madrid did nothing to jolt the =
rejectionist Arab world into acceptance of Israel. And when the party =
was over, it was Israel who felt left to pay the bill.=20
It therefore should not be startling that the Israelis are guarded =
about their likely response to an Iraqi attack. Monday=92s meeting =
between Bush and Sharon in which the President made clear his =
willingness to countenance an Israeli response, was a significant =
movement in position. But it is still fell short of a vital =
acknowledgement : That the United States has no better military, =
political or ideological ally in the Middle East. That the approaching =
war with Iraq will only be buttressed by the involvement of Israeli =
intelligence and military advisers who are both familiar with the =
terrain and skilled in combat against Arab militia. And that without a =
friendly coalition to protect from disintegration, the United States has =
no sound tactical reason to exclude Israel from a direct contribution to =
a military assault.=20
For allowing such an Israeli involvement would send a clear =
message to the Arab world: the balance of power has shifted. No longer =
will the United States feel beholden to perfidious Middle East oil =
barons who attest friendship one day and finance terror against US and =
democratic targets the next. No longer will it feel the need to placate =
brutal autocracies who decry supposed Israeli human rights abuses while =
subjecting their own peoples to manifest repression. It might finally =
acknowledge that the future of the Middle East lies in a quarantine of =
the region by a quadrilateral military alliance, linking those =
democratic countries such as Turkey, India, Israel and the United =
States, who feel most threatened by the export of militant Islam.=20
Seen in this context, the issue of retaliation is almost =
irrelevant. The real question remains whether the United States, in the =
cold light of victory, will be finally jolted, in Shamir's words, into =
looking at the world in a very different way.=20

3. CHRISTIANS RALLY FOR ISRAEL IN WASHINGTON=20
By Lou Marano - United Press International - October 13, 2002=20
Opposition to a fully independent Palestinian state and support =
for a greater Israel that includes the West Bank were themes expressed =
at the Christian Coalition's "Solidarity with Israel Rally" on Friday. =
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has accepted the idea of a =
Palestinian state once hostilities cease -- a position that, polls show, =
a majority of the Israeli public also favors. But on May 12, 59 percent =
of the voting members of Sharon's Likud Party, senior partner in =
Israel's coalition government, voiced opposition to a Palestinian state =
in a non-binding resolution pushed by supporters of former prime =
minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
Netanyahu has argued that no one in the Likud wants to govern =
Palestinians and that Palestinians are entitled to self-rule, but never =
to a sovereign state that could build an army and invite in the forces =
of nations hostile to Israel. Speakers at Friday's rally, which was of =
two hours' duration within a two-day Christian Coalition conference in =
the capital, expressed similar beliefs.=20
"We are in a war on terrorism," said former presidential candidate =
Gary Bauer. "We are trying to limit and lessen the number of terrorist =
nations. So under no circumstances should we create a new terrorist =
nation of Palestine."=20
Bauer said it is obvious that United Nations bureaucrats have =
infinite tolerance for dead Jews, and the diplomats of Europe have =
looked the other way as the beast of anti-Semitism springs up again. The =
U.S. media, Bauer said, have "sided with the murderers instead of the =
murdered." But the Christians of America have made their choice: "We =
will stand with Israel," he said.=20
Bauer, a domestic policy adviser to President Reagan, is =
co-chairman of the American Alliance of Jews and Christians, which =
describes itself as supportive of Israel and in favor of traditional =
values.=20
He noted that on Sept. 11, 2001, there was dancing in the streets =
of the West Bank, but Israelis lowered their flags in mourning. "We will =
not forget who stood with us on 9-11," he said, adding that Yasser =
Arafat should not have control over Christian sites in the Holy Land.=20
"Here's a question to our critics," said Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Tex. =
"Do we want Israel to look more like the Middle East, or do we want the =
rest of the Middle East to start looking more like Israel?"=20
The House majority whip said: "Citizens of free nations share a =
bond that flows from a common set of enduring principles. For this =
reason, Americans have always identified with the righteous struggle of =
the people of Israel."=20
DeLay said Israel and the United States differ greatly, but both =
countries are filled with immigrants following their dreams, fleeing =
danger and finding safe harbor. Both respect freedom and honor the =
rights of the individual, tolerate loud debate through free speech and =
free press, have contested elections and live under the rule of law.=20
"The dangers confronting Israel are enormous. I saw it for =
myself," DeLay said. "I've been to Masada. I've toured Judea and =
Samaria. I've walked the streets of Jerusalem, and I've stood on the =
Golan Heights. ... And you know what? I didn't see any occupied =
territory. What I saw was Israel!" he said to applause.=20
"We can't expect the people of Israel to make territorial =
concessions that leave them unable to defend themselves," DeLay said. =
"When Israel is attacked, we should not ask them to withdraw. We should =
stand with her and fight! ... America doesn't run from a friend."=20
Rep. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a candidate for the seat of retiring =
Sen. Strom Thurmond in the Nov. 5 election, promised to vote to protect =
Israel for the rest of his time in politics.=20
"If America doesn't have the character or the wisdom to stand with =
Israel today, God will not stand with us tomorrow," he told the cheering =
throng at the Washington Convention Center. The congressman said if =
Americans let others bring about political change by blowing up children =
in buses and shopping malls, "We're next. So if you want to defend =
America ... you'd better have the guts to stand up for Israel."=20
Graham predicted, "There will be an awakening in the Arab world. =
There will be people in the Arab world who are tired of seeing conflict, =
tired of seeing their children having no future. They will come forward =
with our help.=20
"There are people in the world today who want to destroy Israel. =
Those people will be my enemy forever. Those people who want to bring =
about peace -- come join us."=20
Graham said he hopes soon to see the United States "send a signal =
that's undeniable, unquestionable to all the forces of evil that you =
will not destroy the state of Israel. If that is your goal, you will =
lose."=20
Pat Robertson, founder and past president of the Christian =
Coalition, said: "Israel is being beset by enemies who hate her. There =
are Islamic schools in the Washington area funded by the Wahabi sect in =
Saudi Arabia, which have maps (of the Middle East) that do not include =
the name Israel. They just have maps that say Palestine. And I submit to =
you today that throughout the Arab world there is no desire to let =
Israel continue as a sovereign state." Rather, he said, there is the =
desire to "wipe Israel off the face of the earth and drive the Jews into =
the sea, and we are not going to let that happen!"=20
Robertson said Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority has either =
killed or deported the vast majority of the Christian population of =
Bethlehem. He said that, contrary to popular perception, Palestine has =
in fact been occupied by Arafat and "a group of Mafia-like thugs" =
imported from Tunisia. "We cannot turn that country over to them," he =
said. The evangelical minister said Arafat and the PA have had since the =
1993 Oslo accords to build infrastructure, private enterprise, to =
educate the young, and bring about sanitation.=20
"They have done none of those things," he said. "All they =
understand is terror. And that's the kind of regime that's been imposed =
on the Palestinian people. And finally, thank the Lord, our president =
has waked up to the fact that Yasser Arafat is not somebody we should be =
dealing with."=20
Robertson said that the Israeli capture of east Jerusalem in the =
1967 Six-Day War was the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. "In my =
opinion, Jerusalem is the eternal ... capital of the state of Israel, =
and it must not be divided," he said. Robertson said God gave the Jews =
the land of Canaan "as your special possession."=20
The nations of the earth are lined up against Israel, he said, and =
the United Nations has passed many resolutions condemning the Jewish =
State. Certain U.S. universities have withdrawn investments, and "there =
has been a shocking turning against Israel on the part of the press." =
Regardless, Robertson said, "We will stand with Israel."=20
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert said: "As you all know, we are in the =
middle of a very vicious and brutal war which is waged by Yasser Arafat =
and his gang against innocent people in the heart of our city. There is =
nothing they want more than to break the spirit of our people. ... And =
nothing will break the spirit of the people of Israel. ... God is with =
us! You are with us! And we will stand firm, and we will win this war =
against the terrorists."=20
Olmert said the tears Israelis shed for their dead and wounded =
should not be mistaken for weakness. "No matter how hard and difficult =
it will be, we will keep this city united, undivided, as the capital of =
the state of Israel and the Jewish people."=20
"And I want you to know," Olmert told his audience, "how much we =
need your friendship and support and how much we respect these =
expressions of support that come from this evangelical community of =
great believers and lovers of Zion. We are partners. We are friends. ... =
God bless all of you. God bless America."=20
Israeli Knesset member Benny Alon, of the Moledet Party, advocated =
the transfer of the Palestinian population of the West Bank to Jordan. =
Israel's enemies think that Jewish values translate to weakness, Alon =
said, but "God knows how to teach us to combine the values of mercy and =
revenge." Israel cannot live with a Palestinian state between the Jordan =
and the Mediterranean, he said. An independent Palestinian state would =
be the beginning of the end of the State of Israel. Referring to Jordan, =
Alon said Palestinians already have a state on the east bank of the =
river. Alon, a rabbi, read aloud some of the last verses of Chapter 33 =
of the Book of Numbers, in which God instructs Moses on the plains of =
Moab. The Jerusalem Bible of 1966 renders the text:
"When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, you =
must drive all the inhabitants of the country before you. ... If you do =
not drive the inhabitants of the country before you, then those you have =
spared will be barbs in your eyes and thorns in your side; they will =
harass you where you live, and I will deal with you as I meant to deal =
with them."

4. KILL ARAFAT et al.=20
By Irwin N. Graulich/Jewsweek Magazine=20
Imagine the most bizarre scenario. American troops surrounding bin =
Laden and comrades somewhere in Eastern Afghanistan, while the US =
military allows him to operate al Qaeda out of his compound. This is =
precisely the present situation with Yasser Arafat.=20
The Thomas Edison of terrorism sits in Ramallah under the guise of =
land for peace, while European leaders still add to his pacifistic =
persona. Even Aesop would not have suggested such an implausible fable.=20
Unless Israel adopts the Bush-Rumsfeld model that terrorists and =
their "management" must be destroyed, suicide attacks will endure ad =
infinitum. In America, the Mafia continued to thrive for 50 years, while =
button men, killers, extorters and field soldiers were jailed. It was =
only after the leadership was put out of existence, did the criminals =
virtually disappear.=20
The obvious solution to terrorism is to eliminate the "Don" and =
his buddies. As a movie reviewer once said, "Every lesson in life is in =
'The Godfather'." Therefore, terrorism in Israel will only cease to =
exist after Arafat, Erekat, Ashrawi, et al, all terrorist motivators, =
are completely destroyed.=20
The pseudo-hawk, Ariel Sharon, is almost single-handedly =
responsible for keeping Arafat alive. "Sounds crazy, no? But here, in =
our little village of Israel, every one of us is a 'dove on the roof,' =
trying to make peace when it is impossible." Thank you Tevye for the =
inspiration.=20
If Bush, Cheney or Rumsfeld were prime minister of Israel, the =
entire PA leadership would ultimately be leading a Hamas procession in a =
wooden box or held in a POW camp somewhere on the outskirts of Cuba. =
Military tribunals would take place with an electric chair close by. =
This is the way a nation wins a war with terrorists.=20
The majority of Palestinian people dislike their leadership, but =
obviously hate Israel a great deal more. They know that Arafat and his =
cronies have stolen billions, while Suha Arafat lives high on the hog in =
Paris, shopping daily for Louis Vuitton bags and Prada shoes. However, =
extreme hatred has a way of allowing people to ignore truth. Yet, =
holding elections under the guise of the present Palestinian Authority =
is akin to allowing the Nazi party to attempt democracy after WWII.=20
History has proven that until an evil contagious leadership =
infection is completed eradicated, the disease will continue to spread =
throughout the population. Presently, there are approximately 500 PA =
carriers of the "Black Death virus," from Arafat right on down. Their =
philosophy and rhetoric are analogous to releasing a biological WMD over =
the West Bank and Gaza.=20
A democratic nation must never allow a temporary halt in terrorism =
to lull it into a false sense of security or complacency. America has =
been aggressive in its own battle, resulting in no further attacks. The =
American strategy is not only focused on active players in the field. =
The managers in the dugout are targets as well.=20
At Nuremberg, the entire world realized that it was the whole Nazi =
party including the accountants and limo drivers, who were responsible =
for WWII and The Holocaust. Only after the total destruction of its =
entire leadership by the Allies did the German people thrive. When will =
Israel learn that profound lesson?=20
Irwin N. Graulich is a well-known motivational speaker on =
ethics, religion and Judaism. A child of Holocaust survivors, he has =
been successful in showing religious and secular people the need for =
God-based ethics. Irwin considers himself a multi-denominational, =
serious Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jew.=20

5. EUROPE'S WAKE-UP CALL=20
By Jim Hoagland - New York Post - October 17, 2002=20
Terror attacks on European, Australian and other tourists in Bali =
and on a French chartered oil tanker off Yemen reveal the true nature of =
the threat posed by al Qaeda and its friends and sponsors: The world is =
afflicted with a deadly, undiscriminating disease that must be halted by =
painful and at times dangerous treatment.=20
The terrorists help change the driving force of world politics =
from economic interdependence to an imperative concern for security. =
Their blood lust limits economic globalization as it was pursued over =
the past decade, and causes foreign investment and tourism to retrench =
in specific locations.=20
The war on global terror is the least bad of all the bad options =
available to Washington to contain the disease as far away from =
America's shores as possible: This war is chemotherapy for weak =
governments like those of Indonesia and Yemen, which now face the stark =
choice of fighting international terrorism on their territory or =
watching their chances to become vibrant players in the global economy =
suffocate in the ruins of terrorist blasts.=20
Europeans who were tempted to hope that this all does not concern =
them because their Middle East policies are "better" than those of =
Washington have learned in the past 10 days that they are in fact all =
Americans now, as far as the loosely allied terrorists are concerned.=20
Do vacationing Germans really bear the responsibility for =
persecuting Palestinians and protecting the Saudi and Kuwaiti royal =
families from the criminally insane Osama bin Laden? The bombers of Bali =
say they do.=20
With us or against us is not a choice the terrorists extend. There =
is no negotiable outcome for this conflict, no pain-free way of getting =
back to the way things were.=20
President Bush, a historical optimist as far as I can tell, seems =
to understand this, as does Vice President Cheney, whose political =
career is a study in pessimism. But facing midterm elections, they have =
largely steered away from open discussion of the negative. That is now =
unsustainable. They can no longer avoid addressing the conflict of =
economic and security imperatives that the war of terror on America, and =
the War on Terror by America, involve.=20
Over months, the confidence of investors has collapsed. They have =
heard little from the White House or the Treasury Department to =
counteract the resentment and doubts many feel over having been lied to =
by corporate chieftains and left unprotected by government's supervisory =
agencies.=20
In the silence, terrorist blasts abroad and sniper bullets at home =
echo more loudly than they otherwise would. Anyone who has ever dreamed =
of a vacation in Bali or of making money by buying emerging-market funds =
that invest in Indonesia has different dreams today.=20
This is globalization's double whammy: Technology continues to =
pull nations toward interdependence. The communications revolution =
compels us to be more aware of the rest of the world. But increasingly, =
it is an awareness of risk that dominates the zeitgeist of international =
economics and politics, and not opportunity.=20
Bush must now show a capability to run the two-front war on terror =
that al Qaeda and Iraq's Saddam Hussein have forced on him while =
articulating an economic strategy to absorb and spread the costs of the =
conflict nationally and internationally.=20

"The territories are the largest detention camp in the world, =
with 3.5 million people inside its boundaries."=20
British Ambassador Sherard Cowper-Coles, in a meeting with =
Maj.-Gen. Amos Gilad, coordinator of government activities in the =
terretories, as reported by Ma=92ariv on October 14.=20
"The ambassador has forgotten that the British Mandate is over." =
A senior Foreign Ministry source, commenting on Cowper-Coles=92s =
remark.=20

7. HIGHLIGHT ARTICLES=20
The Christian Coalition and the Jewish Community Shame on us for =
questioning them. We have Farrakhan, Arafat and the European Union. Do =
we need to question the one community who wants to help us? I for one =
will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Christian =
Coalition, work for them and push the Israel and Pro-family agenda, =
which despite Abe Foxman's misgivings, is in fact in the best interest =
of the Jewish community.=20
The Root Cause? We're All Infidels An appeaser, said Churchill, =
feeds the crocodile in the hope that it will eat him last. But sometimes =
the croc eats him first anyway. For months, the U.S., Britain and even =
Canada apparently had warned the Indonesian government about terrorists =
operating within its borders.=20
Jerusalem Mufti Incites Armageddon The most volatile issue in =
the world today is Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. This is clearly =
predicted in Bible prophecy for the last days. Virtually all of the =
predicted signs that herald the imminent return of Jesus Christ are =
already fulfilled.=20
Is There Anything Dumber Than Repudiating Christians Who Support =
Israel? Disagree all you want with Robertson, but how many Jews have =
the Christian Coalition killed lately? They have been better friends to =
Israel than many Jews.=20

<B>2. <A name=3D2>SHOULD ISRAEL RETALIATE?</A></B>=20
<P>By Avi Davis=20
<P><FONT face=3D"Copperplate Gothic Bold" color=3D#800000=20
size=3D+2><STRONG>T</STRONG></FONT>here is a story told about =
Yitzhak=20
Shamir=92s first encounter with James Baker immediately following =
the Gulf=20
War. Approaching the Israeli prime minister with his hand =
outstretched,=20
Baker, not known for his affability, exuded: Mr. Prime Minister, =
America,=20
owes you a debt of gratitude for your perseverance in not =
retaliating=20
against Iraq. Shamir looked at the hand then up into Baker=92s =
eyes and said=20
tersely: You should know, Mr. Secretary, that being hit by 39 scud =
missiles makes a people look at the world in a very different way =
.=20
<P>Although perhaps apocryphal, the statement nevertheless speaks =
volumes=20
about Israel=92s attitude to the issue of retaliation. No one in =
Israel=20
needs to be reminded of the frustration of absorbing six weeks of =
attacks,=20
spending hours locked in dank, lightless bomb shelters, donning =
gas masks=20
for protection and the feeling that they were paying the price for =
a war=20
they did not start and for attacks to which they could not =
respond.=20
<P>It cannot be too surprising then, that Israel is holding its =
cards=20
close to its chest when it comes to assurances about its =
retaliatory=20
intentions. During the Gulf War the first George Bush, according =
to then=20
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Arens, did not request, but =
actually=20
demanded that the Shamir Government not retaliate. Placating =
Israeli=20
fears, Bush=92s military men assured Shamir that the Scud missile =
launchers=20
would be found and destroyed. But the U.S. military, despite its =
reputed=20
sophistication, was unable to locate even one of the launchers and =
the=20
Scuds continued to batter the Israeli heartland.=20
<P>Notwithstanding this catastrophe of reconnaissance, the United =
States=20
failed, abjectly, to fulfill what it had more or less assured =
Israel as=20
its primary military objective - the elimination of the Iraqi =
menace. The=20
Shamir government had accepted the Bush calculation that Saddam =
Hussein=20
would fall from power and if not removed by internal putsch, then =
would be=20
delivered by American military intervention. But a decade later =
Saddam=20
Hussein is not only still in power, but can be found fomenting =
terrorism=20
in Israel itself though both a network of provocateurs and a =
system of=20
cash back rewards for homicide bombers.=20
<P>The Israelis also expected political rewards to follow their =
willing=20
sacrifices on behalf of the U.S. military campaign. It is =
forgotten by no=20
one that the last Bush administration was the most unfriendly to =
Israel=20
since the country=92s founding. Shamir had virtually become person =
non grata=20
at the White House. When in 1990, (prior to the Gulf War) James =
Baker=20
famously admonished the Israelis: call us when you are serious =
about peace=20
and repeated the identification of settlements as the major =
obstacle to=20
achieving it , he turned US- Israeli relations into a bitter =
slogging=20
match between lobbyists. Many in the Israeli political =
establishment=20
therefore felt certain that compliance with the Bush =
Administration=92s=20
demands would win them points in Washington and would convert a =
cold=20
shoulder into a warm embrace.=20
<P>But not even this panned out. The first Bush Administration, =
flush with=20
confidence in its new diplomatic muscle, railroaded an unwilling =
Shamir=20
into a peace conference in Madrid. The conference was hailed as a=20
diplomatic breakthrough, attended by the President himself. But it =
was far=20
from achieving anything substantive. While it did bring the =
antagonists=20
face to face, it also succeeded in revealing the depth of hatred =
for=20
Israel (and, if we are to be truthful, for the U.S. itself ) in =
the Arab=20
world. In the end, Madrid did nothing to jolt the rejectionist =
Arab world=20
into acceptance of Israel. And when the party was over, it was =
Israel who=20
felt left to pay the bill.=20
<P>It therefore should not be startling that the Israelis are =
guarded=20
about their likely response to an Iraqi attack. Monday=92s meeting =
between=20
Bush and Sharon in which the President made clear his willingness =
to=20
countenance an Israeli response, was a significant movement in =
position.=20
But it is still fell short of a vital acknowledgement : That the =
United=20
States has no better military, political or ideological ally in =
the Middle=20
East. That the approaching war with Iraq will only be buttressed =
by the=20
involvement of Israeli intelligence and military advisers who are =
both=20
familiar with the terrain and skilled in combat against Arab =
militia. And=20
that without a friendly coalition to protect from disintegration, =
the=20
United States has no sound tactical reason to exclude Israel from =
a direct=20
contribution to a military assault.=20
<P>For allowing such an Israeli involvement would send a clear =
message to=20
the Arab world: the balance of power has shifted. No longer will =
the=20
United States feel beholden to perfidious Middle East oil barons =
who=20
attest friendship one day and finance terror against US and =
democratic=20
targets the next. No longer will it feel the need to placate =
brutal=20
autocracies who decry supposed Israeli human rights abuses while=20
subjecting their own peoples to manifest repression. It might =
finally=20
acknowledge that the future of the Middle East lies in a =
quarantine of the=20
region by a quadrilateral military alliance, linking those =
democratic=20
countries such as Turkey, India, Israel and the United States, who =
feel=20
most threatened by the export of militant Islam.=20
<P>Seen in this context, the issue of retaliation is almost =
irrelevant.=20
The real question remains whether the United States, in the cold =
light of=20
victory, will be finally jolted, in Shamir's words, into looking =
at the=20
world in a very different way.=20

<B>3. <A name=3D3>CHRISTIANS RALLY FOR ISRAEL IN=20
WASHINGTON</A></B>=20
<P>By Lou Marano - United Press International - October 13, 2002=20
<P><FONT face=3D"Copperplate Gothic Bold" color=3D#800000=20
size=3D+2><STRONG>O</STRONG></FONT>pposition to a fully =
independent=20
Palestinian state and support for a greater Israel that includes =
the West=20
Bank were themes expressed at the Christian Coalition's =
"Solidarity with=20
Israel Rally" on Friday. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has =
accepted=20
the idea of a Palestinian state once hostilities cease -- a =
position that,=20
polls show, a majority of the Israeli public also favors. But on =
May 12,=20
59 percent of the voting members of Sharon's Likud Party, senior =
partner=20
in Israel's coalition government, voiced opposition to a =
Palestinian state=20
in a non-binding resolution pushed by supporters of former prime =
minister=20
Binyamin Netanyahu.
<P>Netanyahu has argued that no one in the Likud wants to govern=20
Palestinians and that Palestinians are entitled to self-rule, but =
never to=20
a sovereign state that could build an army and invite in the =
forces of=20
nations hostile to Israel. Speakers at Friday's rally, which was =
of two=20
hours' duration within a two-day Christian Coalition conference in =
the=20
capital, expressed similar beliefs.=20
<P>"We are in a war on terrorism," said former presidential =
candidate Gary=20
Bauer. "We are trying to limit and lessen the number of terrorist =
nations.=20
So under no circumstances should we create a new terrorist nation =
of=20
Palestine."=20
<P>Bauer said it is obvious that United Nations bureaucrats have =
infinite=20
tolerance for dead Jews, and the diplomats of Europe have looked =
the other=20
way as the beast of anti-Semitism springs up again. The U.S. =
media, Bauer=20
said, have "sided with the murderers instead of the murdered." But =
the=20
Christians of America have made their choice: "We will stand with =
Israel,"=20
he said.=20
<P>Bauer, a domestic policy adviser to President Reagan, is =
co-chairman of=20
the American Alliance of Jews and Christians, which describes =
itself as=20
supportive of Israel and in favor of traditional values.=20
<P>He noted that on Sept. 11, 2001, there was dancing in the =
streets of=20
the West Bank, but Israelis lowered their flags in mourning. "We =
will not=20
forget who stood with us on 9-11," he said, adding that Yasser =
Arafat=20
should not have control over Christian sites in the Holy Land.=20
<P>"Here's a question to our critics," said Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Tex. =
"Do we=20
want Israel to look more like the Middle East, or do we want the =
rest of=20
the Middle East to start looking more like Israel?"=20
<P>The House majority whip said: "Citizens of free nations share a =
bond=20
that flows from a common set of enduring principles. For this =
reason,=20
Americans have always identified with the righteous struggle of =
the people=20
of Israel."=20
<P>DeLay said Israel and the United States differ greatly, but =
both=20
countries are filled with immigrants following their dreams, =
fleeing=20
danger and finding safe harbor. Both respect freedom and honor the =
rights=20
of the individual, tolerate loud debate through free speech and =
free=20
press, have contested elections and live under the rule of law.=20
<P>"The dangers confronting Israel are enormous. I saw it for =
myself,"=20
DeLay said. "I've been to Masada. I've toured Judea and Samaria. =
I've=20
walked the streets of Jerusalem, and I've stood on the Golan =
Heights. ...=20
And you know what? I didn't see any occupied territory. What I saw =
was=20
Israel!" he said to applause.=20
<P>"We can't expect the people of Israel to make territorial =
concessions=20
that leave them unable to defend themselves," DeLay said. "When =
Israel is=20
attacked, we should not ask them to withdraw. We should stand with =
her and=20
fight! ... America doesn't run from a friend."=20
<P>Rep. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a candidate for the seat of =
retiring Sen.=20
Strom Thurmond in the Nov. 5 election, promised to vote to protect =
Israel=20
for the rest of his time in politics.=20
<P>"If America doesn't have the character or the wisdom to stand =
with=20
Israel today, God will not stand with us tomorrow," he told the =
cheering=20
throng at the Washington Convention Center. The congressman said =
if=20
Americans let others bring about political change by blowing up =
children=20
in buses and shopping malls, "We're next. So if you want to defend =
America=20
... you'd better have the guts to stand up for Israel."=20
<P>Graham predicted, "There will be an awakening in the Arab =
world. There=20
will be people in the Arab world who are tired of seeing conflict, =
tired=20
of seeing their children having no future. They will come forward =
with our=20
help.=20
<P>"There are people in the world today who want to destroy =
Israel. Those=20
people will be my enemy forever. Those people who want to bring =
about=20
peace -- come join us."=20
<P>Graham said he hopes soon to see the United States "send a =
signal=20
that's undeniable, unquestionable to all the forces of evil that =
you will=20
not destroy the state of Israel. If that is your goal, you will =
lose."=20
<P>Pat Robertson, founder and past president of the Christian =
Coalition,=20
said: "Israel is being beset by enemies who hate her. There are =
Islamic=20
schools in the Washington area funded by the Wahabi sect in Saudi =
Arabia,=20
which have maps (of the Middle East) that do not include the name =
Israel.=20
They just have maps that say Palestine. And I submit to you today =
that=20
throughout the Arab world there is no desire to let Israel =
continue as a=20
sovereign state." Rather, he said, there is the desire to "wipe =
Israel off=20
the face of the earth and drive the Jews into the sea, and we are =
not=20
going to let that happen!"=20
<P>Robertson said Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority has either =
killed=20
or deported the vast majority of the Christian population of =
Bethlehem. He=20
said that, contrary to popular perception, Palestine has in fact =
been=20
occupied by Arafat and "a group of Mafia-like thugs" imported from =
Tunisia. "We cannot turn that country over to them," he said. The=20
evangelical minister said Arafat and the PA have had since the =
1993 Oslo=20
accords to build infrastructure, private enterprise, to educate =
the young,=20
and bring about sanitation.=20
<P>"They have done none of those things," he said. "All they =
understand is=20
terror. And that's the kind of regime that's been imposed on the=20
Palestinian people. And finally, thank the Lord, our president has =
waked=20
up to the fact that Yasser Arafat is not somebody we should be =
dealing=20
with."=20
<P>Robertson said that the Israeli capture of east Jerusalem in =
the 1967=20
Six-Day War was the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. "In my =
opinion,=20
Jerusalem is the eternal ... capital of the state of Israel, and =
it must=20
not be divided," he said. Robertson said God gave the Jews the =
land of=20
Canaan "as your special possession."=20
<P>The nations of the earth are lined up against Israel, he said, =
and the=20
United Nations has passed many resolutions condemning the Jewish =
State.=20
Certain U.S. universities have withdrawn investments, and "there =
has been=20
a shocking turning against Israel on the part of the press." =
Regardless,=20
Robertson said, "We will stand with Israel."=20
<P>Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert said: "As you all know, we are in =
the=20
middle of a very vicious and brutal war which is waged by Yasser =
Arafat=20
and his gang against innocent people in the heart of our city. =
There is=20
nothing they want more than to break the spirit of our people. ... =
And=20
nothing will break the spirit of the people of Israel. ... God is =
with us!=20
You are with us! And we will stand firm, and we will win this war =
against=20
the terrorists."=20
<P>Olmert said the tears Israelis shed for their dead and wounded =
should=20
not be mistaken for weakness. "No matter how hard and difficult it =
will=20
be, we will keep this city united, undivided, as the capital of =
the state=20
of Israel and the Jewish people."=20
<P>"And I want you to know," Olmert told his audience, "how much =
we need=20
your friendship and support and how much we respect these =
expressions of=20
support that come from this evangelical community of great =
believers and=20
lovers of Zion. We are partners. We are friends. ... God bless all =
of you.=20
God bless America."=20
<P>Israeli Knesset member Benny Alon, of the Moledet Party, =
advocated the=20
transfer of the Palestinian population of the West Bank to Jordan. =
Israel's enemies think that Jewish values translate to weakness, =
Alon=20
said, but "God knows how to teach us to combine the values of =
mercy and=20
revenge." Israel cannot live with a Palestinian state between the =
Jordan=20
and the Mediterranean, he said. An independent Palestinian state =
would be=20
the beginning of the end of the State of Israel. Referring to =
Jordan, Alon=20
said Palestinians already have a state on the east bank of the =
river.=20
Alon, a rabbi, read aloud some of the last verses of Chapter 33 of =
the=20
Book of Numbers, in which God instructs Moses on the plains of =
Moab. The=20
Jerusalem Bible of 1966 renders the text:
<BLOCKQUOTE>"When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of =
Canaan,=20
you must drive all the inhabitants of the country before you. =
... If you=20
do not drive the inhabitants of the country before you, then =
those you=20
have spared will be barbs in your eyes and thorns in your side; =
they=20
will harass you where you live, and I will deal with you as I =
meant to=20
deal with them."</BLOCKQUOTE>

Arafat.=20
<P>The Thomas Edison of terrorism sits in Ramallah under the guise =
of land=20

persona.=20
Even Aesop would not have suggested such an implausible fable.=20
<P>Unless Israel adopts the Bush-Rumsfeld model that terrorists =
and their=20

In America, the Mafia continued to thrive for 50 years, while =
button men,=20
killers, extorters and field soldiers were jailed. It was only =
after the=20
leadership was put out of existence, did the criminals virtually=20
disappear.=20
<P>The obvious solution to terrorism is to eliminate the "Don" and =
his=20
buddies. As a movie reviewer once said, "Every lesson in life is =
in 'The=20

exist after=20
Arafat, Erekat, Ashrawi, et al, all terrorist motivators, are =
completely=20
destroyed.=20
<P>The pseudo-hawk, Ariel Sharon, is almost single-handedly =

for keeping Arafat alive. "Sounds crazy, no? But here, in our =

<P>If Bush, Cheney or Rumsfeld were prime minister of Israel, the =
entire=20
PA leadership would ultimately be leading a Hamas procession in a =
wooden=20

Military=20
tribunals would take place with an electric chair close by. This =
is the=20
way a nation wins a war with terrorists.=20
<P>The majority of Palestinian people dislike their leadership, =
but=20
obviously hate Israel a great deal more. They know that Arafat and =
his=20
cronies have stolen billions, while Suha Arafat lives high on the =
hog in=20
Paris, shopping daily for Louis Vuitton bags and Prada shoes. =
However,=20
extreme hatred has a way of allowing people to ignore truth. Yet, =
holding=20
elections under the guise of the present Palestinian Authority is =
akin to=20
allowing the Nazi party to attempt democracy after WWII.=20
<P>History has proven that until an evil contagious leadership =
infection=20
is completed eradicated, the disease will continue to spread =
throughout=20
the population. Presently, there are approximately 500 PA carriers =
of the=20
"Black Death virus," from Arafat right on down. Their philosophy =
and=20
rhetoric are analogous to releasing a biological WMD over the West =
Bank=20
and Gaza.=20
<P>A democratic nation must never allow a temporary halt in =
terrorism to=20
lull it into a false sense of security or complacency. America has =
been=20
aggressive in its own battle, resulting in no further attacks. The =
American strategy is not only focused on active players in the =
field. The=20
managers in the dugout are targets as well.=20
<P>At Nuremberg, the entire world realized that it was the whole =
Nazi=20
party including the accountants and limo drivers, who were =

learn that profound lesson?=20

like=20
those of Indonesia and Yemen, which now face the stark choice of =
fighting=20
international terrorism on their territory or watching their =
chances to=20
become vibrant players in the global economy suffocate in the =
ruins of=20
terrorist blasts.=20
<P>Europeans who were tempted to hope that this all does not =
concern them=20
because their Middle East policies are "better" than those of =
Washington=20
have learned in the past 10 days that they are in fact all =
Americans now,=20
as far as the loosely allied terrorists are concerned.=20
<P>Do vacationing Germans really bear the responsibility for =
persecuting=20
Palestinians and protecting the Saudi and Kuwaiti royal families =
from the=20
criminally insane Osama bin Laden? The bombers of Bali say they =
do.=20
<P>With us or against us is not a choice the terrorists extend. =
There is=20
no negotiable outcome for this conflict, no pain-free way of =
getting back=20
to the way things were.=20
<P>President Bush, a historical optimist as far as I can tell, =
seems to=20
understand this, as does Vice President Cheney, whose political =
career is=20
a study in pessimism. But facing midterm elections, they have =
largely=20
steered away from open discussion of the negative. That is now=20
unsustainable. They can no longer avoid addressing the conflict of =
economic and security imperatives that the war of terror on =
America, and=20
the War on Terror by America, involve.=20
<P>Over months, the confidence of investors has collapsed. They =
have heard=20
little from the White House or the Treasury Department to =
counteract the=20
resentment and doubts many feel over having been lied to by =
corporate=20
chieftains and left unprotected by government's supervisory =
agencies.=20
<P>In the silence, terrorist blasts abroad and sniper bullets at =
home echo=20
more loudly than they otherwise would. Anyone who has ever dreamed =
of a=20
vacation in Bali or of making money by buying emerging-market =
funds that=20
invest in Indonesia has different dreams today.=20
<P>This is globalization's double whammy: Technology continues to =
pull=20
nations toward interdependence. The communications revolution =
compels us=20
to be more aware of the rest of the world. But increasingly, it is =
an=20
awareness of risk that dominates the zeitgeist of international =
economics=20
and politics, and not opportunity.=20
<P>Bush must now show a capability to run the two-front war on =
terror that=20
al Qaeda and Iraq's Saddam Hussein have forced on him while =
articulating=20
an economic strategy to absorb and spread the costs of the =
conflict=20
nationally and internationally.=20
