     1. YESTERDAY

By Naomi Ragen

One of the reasons I write this information down and send it
out to you is because I really do believe that all those who
love Israel and the Jewish people – whether they are themselves
Jewish or not—are part of one great family.

The only way that a family stays close, is for all members to
understand and experience what the others do. Divided by great
distances not only of land but of mentality, information, and
experiences, I hope in some way to help us bridge those
yawning gaps, to make those great leaps, with these missives,
typed in my little office in the hills overlooking my
beloved Jerusalem.

Perhaps it is a mistaken belief, but one I subscribe to
nonetheless, that any good, decent, reasonable person who
hears and sees and understands what I do, sitting here, would
draw the same conclusions I have about events and our
attitudes towards unfolding history.

And so, with your permission, I should like to tell you
about what I saw, heard and understood yesterday,
February 6, 2002.

The news told me this: A suicide bomber got on a bus in
French Hill , a bus with fifty people coming from Jerusalem
to Maaleh Adumim (near the Dead Sea).

His coat was zipped up, and his hand was playing with
something in his pocket.

The bus driver asked him where he was going. He wouldn’t
answer and sat down in the back. The driver called out to
him again, seeing strange wires dripping out of his coat.

A passenger approached him, grabbing his hand out of his
pocket. The driver made a dash for the nearest IDF
checkpoint and called out to the soldiers, who boarded
the bus, got punched in the face by the bomber before
eventually subduing him.

Had it been me, I would have thrown the bastard into a
ditch and machine-gunned him until he exploded.

But not our soldiers. Our soldiers risked their lives
to hold his hands still until the sappers undid the belt,
then exploded the beltin a ditch. I saw that explosion
on tv. It would have incinerated that bus.

Then on the news I saw a truck that had been stopped at
a checkpoint. It was going from one Arafat -controlled
town to another . The IDF seached it and found rocket
launchers hidden inside bags of flour.

Rocket launchers capable of exploding in the center of
Israeli towns. I heard our Minister of Defense, Labor
party MK Ben-Eliezer, say that if they attack our towns
with these launchers, then its a whole new ball game.

And I thought: You had the Karin A, Mr.Ben- Eliezer.
You have this truckload on its way. Only when x number
of Israelis are lying dead are you going to go in there
and put a stop to this?

Only then is there a new ball game?

Then I heard CNN report about Arafat’s letter to Mr. Bush,
in which he said he didn’t know anything about the
Karin A, but took responsibility anyhow. He wrote about
all the ways he was trying to subdue the extremists.
I heard Colin Powell talk about the need for Israelis
to cool down the situation. A little later, I saw film
footage of Mr. Arafat giving a speech in Arabic in
Ramallah.

He said this, no, actually he chanted it, smiling:

”We will send a million suicide bombers to Jerusalem.
We will send a million suicide bombers to Jerusalem.”

His entourage grinned. The crowd chanted back. I saw a CNN
advertisement for it’s new Arabic CNN, and finally
understood what the past two years of CNN pro-Arab
propaganda was meant to facilitate. Congratulations Mr.
Eason Jordon! You and your fellow CNN money grubbers
would sell your grandmothers for some filthy lucre!
Real, patriotic Americans! I hope Ted Turner is happy.

I was pretty tired by nightfall, but couldn’t sleep.
My son was watching tv and I joined him. “There’s been
another “piguah”( attack) he told me. I hurried to my
computer to find the on-line Hebrew news. A terrorist
had entered the home of farmers in the Jordan Valley
and murdered a 51 year- old mother and her handicapped
eleven year old daughter.
(Not that it makes any difference, but this was Jordan
Valley, not West Bank, and so Reuters shouldn’t be
calling it a “settlement.” Tel Aviv is also, according
to that, a “settlement.”)

A soldier guarding the community was murdered. Five
other soldiers wounded.

I heard planes overhead. I heard sirens. I looked
across at the Arab village that faces me, wondering
if they would suddenly be taking Arafat's incitement to
heart, wondering if I really should get a gun.

I finally went to sleep.

I’ll let you know what happens today.

     2. THE PUBLIC & PRIVATE TREATMENT OF ISRAEL
   by Richard H. Shulman

Antisemitism is irrational. How should people react to it?
They should treat it, as other prejudices, as a social disease
and a psychological one. The fault is not in the reactor but
in the actor, the bigot. Many Jews, however, react as if
they can win over confirmed antisemites by being nice to
them. Being "nice" means giving in to them. Appeasing bigots
is neurotic, too. (Mild antisemites sometimes can be won over
by a combination of goodwill and strength, in my experience.)

If Israel acted firmly, confidently, and justly in its
interest, it would accomplish what it must. Most of the world
would admire it as a self-respecting power. Instead, the
leaders of Israel act mildly, hesitantly, and unsure of
their cause, hoping that their restraint and patience would
be admired and rewarded. Human nature doesn't work as they
anticipate. The meek may go to Heaven but they don't inherit
the Earth. What kind of a world do the Israelis think
this is? One that does the right thing by those who do the
right thing? No, this is a world with many decent souls
ruled by selfish ones ready to exploit the weak and fight
their defenders. In such a world, Israel must be strong,
act with strength, and present its case strenuously. Then
its case might be heard rather than ignored.

Publicly, Israel is treated with contempt and increasingly
like a leper. All the more easily, then, were Israelis
taken in by the initial Oslo thaw in the Arab League frost.
The Arab start of diplomatic recognition of Israel and
reduction in the trade boycott of Israel signified not a
success in peace-making, as Israelis wishfully thought but
an enticement for Israel to continue making concessions to
the Arabs. When the concessions ended, so did diplomacy
and trade.

The many fine things that Israel does, such as disaster
rescue work for other countries, medical innovation, and
hands-on foreign aid, get little recognition.

Privately, Israel is treated differently. There is much
more respect there, on specific matters, but the foreign
countries are circumspect about it, as if ashamed of being
publicly associated with Israel. It would not be
politically correct. For example, foreign countries
privately are consulting Israel on how to thwart terrorism.
This acknowledges that Israel is fighting terrorism. Israel
is fighting the good fight. Then its enemies are terrorists.
But the foreign countries don't acknowledge it. Some of them
even second the daily Arab statement that their terrorism
is just "resistance against occupation." (I don't accept
the premise that Israel is occupying anything in its own
homeland.) However, terrorism is a means and resistance
to occupation, is an end. Terrorism and resistance cannot
be compared any more than oranges and apples as types of
citrus. In other words, if the means is bad, i.e., if the
means is terrorism, it doesn't matter whether the cause is
good. Evil means sullies the cause. Are we now Bolsheviks,
who say the ends justify the means? Nor do the Arabs have
a just cause to begin with. They simply are bigoted
imperialists. But that is beside the point -- terrorism
is uncivilized and anyone who rationalizes it is an
accomplice of it.

     3. ARAFAT AS PEACEMAKER

By Natan Sharansky
February 8, 2002 - Wall Street Journal

Earlier this week in the New York Times, Yasser Arafat wrote
of the "Palestinian vision of peace." What is the free world
to make of Arafat's "vision," filled with the promise of
peace and reconciliation?

Though there are leaders whose vision helps us see beyond
the often-harsh reality we confront and points us toward a
better future, there are also leaders who use the language
of "peace," "justice" and "freedom" only as an ideological
façade behind which they mask their true intentions.

Stalin was a perfect example of how a leader with Orwellian
flair can employ a beautifully sounding "vision" to cloak
the most horrific evil. While many in the free world
believed in his promises of peace, freedom and justice in
an age of universal brotherhood, Stalin was using communism
to justify the murder of tens of millions of people.

Instruments of Power

Fortunately, history has taught us that we can judge a
leader's vision before tragedy strikes by answering one
simple question: Does the leader see human beings as
merely instruments of power -- "cogs" as Stalin used to
say -- or as individuals whose lives are sacred in
and of themselves?

According to this criterion, Arafat's "vision of peace"
is another attempt to hide evil behind a respectable
veneer. The contempt for human life that Arafat has
shown over the last eight years clearly demonstrates
that, rather than being part of the fight for peace and
justice, he is firmly entrenched in the camp of evil
and terror.

Arafat has never had much respect for human life. In
fact, one doesn't even have to turn to his past and
present support of terror against Jewish and Arab
civilians to prove it. Just look at how he has treated
his own people. In 35 years, he has done nothing to
improve the daily lives of the Palestinians, preferring
they remain in the squalor of refugee camps where they
can be used as an ideological weapon against Israel.

In using the Palestinian people as pawns in the
struggle against Israel, Arafat is joined by many Arab
leaders. Rather than asking why after 54 years, the
Palestinians have not been permitted to return to
Israel, the world must ask why the leaders of Arab
nations have made the Palestinians the only
third-generation refugees in the world by refusing to
absorb their Arab brethren into their own countries.

When hundreds of thousands of Jews were thrown out
of the Arab world after Israel's independence, the
nascent Jewish State did not exploit the suffering of
these refugees to serve ideological ends, but
mobilized its limited resources to give them hope
for a brighter future.

At Oslo, Arafat was given the opportunity to build a
Palestinian Authority that could be used to better
the lot of the Palestinian people. But rather than
use his new-found powers to promote peace and bring
about prosperity, Arafat again turned them into a
battering ram against the Jewish State.

Money allocated to improve the Palestinian's standard
of living was diverted to support a vast network of
terror. Hundreds of millions of dollars earmarked
for economic and social development were instead used
to buy weapons to attack Israel.

Broadcasting stations meant to promote democracy and
freedom were used to foment incitement and justify
terror. Schools meant to educate the next generation
of Palestinians for peace with Israel have only
inculcated hatred for Jews and their state.

The Virtues of Martyrdom

While he writes in English of his vision of peace,
Arafat sends a very different message in Arabic to
his own people. He calls on them to become shaheeds
(martyrs) in the struggle to liberate Jerusalem, and
preaches the virtues of martyrdom to Palestinian
children though his state-controlled media.

The terrorist war he continues to wage against our
civilians in cafes, discos and pizzerias has killed
hundreds and devastated the lives of both Jews and
Palestinians. We have spent the last eight years
convincing ourselves that the key to peace was
strengthening a dictator like Arafat, rather then
the Palestinian people he continues to repress. The
result has been that instead of paving the way toward
an open and transparent Palestinian society that could
serve as a shining example for the entire region, we
have helped create a terrorist regime that endangers
both Israelis and Palestinians.

A genuine vision for peace in our region is one where
the free world stands firmly behind Israel's fight
against terror and where it treats the Palestinian as
equals -- devoting it resources and energies to enable
the Palestinian people to enjoy the same democratic
freedoms that we so rightly cherish and not subjecting
them to the rule of a terrorist tyrant.

     4. “AXIS OF EVIL”

Cynthia Yacowar-Sweeney - 05 February 2002

What could possibly be gained for three Palestinian attacks
in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv almost two weeks ago? The answer is
Israeli retaliation whereby hundreds, if not thousands, of
Palestinians would be killed by Israel´s superior military
strength. The more dead Palestinians, the more international
support for Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat
to achieve statehood.

Arafat is losing all credibility. The United States is
breathing down his neck. U.S. envoy to the Middle East,
Anthony Zinni, whose mediation efforts have been suspended,
has reportedly called Arafat the "Godfather" of the
Palestinian Authority "mafia" and an "incorrigible liar."
Arafat´s latest gesture for renewed negotiations in his
op-ed piece that ran in the New York Times this past weekend,
spewing with more empty promises to crack down on terrorists,
is yet another flagrant attempt to sway public opinion to
his side. Arafat´s "Palestinian Vision of Peace" is
diametrically opposed to the suicide bombings that he himself
encourages. Just over a week ago, after condemning the second
Jerusalem attack in English, Arafat called for millions of
martyrs in the battle for Jerusalem, in Arabic, to an
Arabic-speaking audience, declaring his own desire to
die as a martyr.

U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice described
Arafat´s opinion piece as "not helpful." She said that if
Arafat wants to achieve the vision of peace he outlines,
then he needs to go after terrorist networks responsible
for the bloody wave of violence in Israel. Instead, Arafat
has formed an alliance with the Lebanese-based,
Syrian-approved terrorist organization Hezbollah and its
patron Iran, the world´s leading state sponsor of
terrorism. There we have it, Israel´s axis of evil: the
Palestinian Authority, Hezbollah and Iran. This alliance
was evidenced in last month´s Iran-supplied arms shipment
of the Karine-A bound for Gaza. U.S. Vice President Dick
Cheney rightly accuses Arafat of working with Hezbollah
and Iran to get the 50-ton supply of weapons for the PA
to use against Israel. President Bush says he is
disappointed with Arafat over the arms shipment,
accusing him of "enhancing" terror.

In fact, the White House is seriously contemplating
severing ties with Arafat and his PA, shutting the PLO
office in Washington and adding Arafat´s Fatah
organization, along with his personal security apparatus,
Force 17, to the State Department´s list of foreign
terrorist organizations. Moreover, for the first time,
there is no mention of the "cycle of violence." The
U.S. stipulates that before peace negotiations can
resume, Arafat must crack down on terrorists and
acknowledge that the arms shipment was intended for the
Palestinians. Yet Arafat denies any knowledge of the
ship. No reference to the arms shipment was made in
his article appearing in The New York Times.

Despite finally admitting to his connection with Iran
and promising "that all links between the PA and Iran
will halt" (Ma´ariv), Arafat continues to strengthen
his ties with both Hezbollah and Iran, whose aim is to
annihilate Israel and create an Islamic empire in the
Middle East. Iran´s spiritual leaders, the ayatollahs,
who are the real source of power in Iran, are committed
to the destruction of Israel and call for the liberation
of Palestine. They do not consider Palestinian
terrorists to be terrorists, because, in their view,
these so-called "militants" are merely trying to free
their land. It was inevitable that Arafat would
eventually hitch up with Iran, recently identified by
President Bush, in his state of the union speech, as
comprising the world´s axis of evil, along with
Iraq and North Korea.

Iran, lacking a border with Israel, is using Arafat´s
PA, as well as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as proxies in
the PA-controlled territories to threaten Israel. In the
same way, it is using Hezbollah as its proxy army in
Lebanon to wage war against northern Israel. Just two
weeks ago, Hezbollah fired mortars and anti-tank
missiles at IDF positions along Mount Dov in the Golan.
Over the weekend, anti-aircraft missiles were fired
over northern Israel against IAF planes. According to
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, Hezbollah
possesses approximately 10,000 ground-to-ground rockets,
with a range of between 20-70 kilometers. These rockets
came from Iran. They carry conventional explosives, but
they could easily be converted to carry chemical or
biological agents. Considering the fact that Iran has
an excellent missile capability, thanks to China and
North Korea, and most probably has nuclear weapons,
thanks to Russia, destroying Israel should not be too
great a feat. In fact, just this past December, Iran´s
former president implied that Israel could be the target
of an Islamic nuclear attack.

In this radically dangerous context, Hamas has deployed
rockets in the West Bank that can target Israeli cities
around Tel Aviv and Ben-Gurion Airport. The PA is
preparing to launch attacks with new advanced weaponry
prohibited by the Oslo peace agreements. Israel has
warned the PA that any such attacks would result in
massive retaliation, which is exactly what Arafat wants.

Massive retaliation. Dead Palestinians. Public
international support. He wants all of Palestine,
meaning, the destruction of the State of Israel. With
the help of Iran and Hezbollah, Arafat´s goals do not
seem too far off.

     5. THE ENTIRE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT EXPLAINED
         IN ONE EASY LESSON

by Steven Plaut - February 5, 2002

1. You may have noticed the Saudi prince denounced the US
for its "indefensible position regarding the Middle East",
while at the same time calling for closer ties with the US
that do not involve the US nuking Saudi Arabia.

Now this mention of the "indefensible position" of the
US has inspired me to present a total and complete analysis
of the Middle East conflict in one simple lesson. You are
welcome to make use of it. I tried to get it down to the
same number of words as Hillel but without success.

Here goes:

The Arabs believe it is their Allah-granted right to
destroy Israel and to commit genocide against Jews. While
they claim that they need to commit genocide because
Palestinians are mistreated, in reality Israel treats
Arabs a thousand times better than Arab regimes treat Arabs.
Thus the Arabs seek to destroy Israel and to commit genocide
simply because this is something they think would be fun
to do. In other words, because they are savage barbarians
little better than the Germans in the 1940s.

The Arabs are angry at the United States because it
disapproves of the idea of the Arabs perpetrating a Second
Holocaust against Jews. The United States occasionally
even backs Israel's right to prevent Arabs from murdering
Jews. This enrages the Arabs. Who the hell are the Americans
to interfere with Arab plans for a nice Second Holocaust?
How dare the US side with Israel when it defends itself
against Arab murderers? Even worse, the US has not made
a total all-out effort in preventing Israel from
occasionally attacking Arab murderers in retaliation for
their murdering Jews or to prevent their plans to murder
Jews. And preventing murder and genocide is unforgivable
interference in things that are none of the concern of
the United States, say the Arabs.

This is why the Arab world and most of the Moslem
world are enraged at the United States. When Arabs demand
that Americans ask themselves WHY they are so hated in
the Middle East, this is the precise answer.

2. By the way, the 5 gents who became McNuggets in the
Gaza Strip today were from the Popular Democratic Front
for the Liberation of Palestine, set up by Naif Hawatme.
You may recall that it was precisely this group that
perpetrated the mass murder of children at Maalot in
the early 1970s. At the time I was a grad student at
the Hebrew U. I will never forget the fact that the week
before the atrocity in Maalot, the local leftist student
rag at the Hebrew University came out for negotiations
with, meetings with, and reaching an agreement with ....
(drums) ... the very same terrorist group, the PDFLP.
This was decades before the total conversion of Israel's
Left into the official Israeli movement for national
suicide. (Actually, it was even before the same people
came out for striking deals with Arafat and the PLO,
arguing that the Marxie PDFLP was better and
more progressive)

3. One corollary of the above MidEast-in-One-Simple-Lesson
involves the use of the term "racism". Israel's
anti-Jewish Left uses the word "racism" the way most
people use commas. "Racism", when used by the Left,
has only one single meaning = alleged Jewish "racism"
against Arabs, manifested in such things as Arabs
getting lower math grades than Jews. More generally,
the Caring Left believes the entire Middle East conflict
is a byproduct of Jewish anti-Arab "racism", and that
the solution is for the Jews to repent and make
affirmative action and compensate the Arabs and to be
nice to them. Or to put it another way, when Arabs
randomly mass murder Jewish children, this is NOT racism.
But should a Jew endorse the principle that Jews have
the right to defend themselves against such attacks,
now THAT would be racism. When Israel assassinates
terrorhoids in the territories who murder Jews, THAT is
racism par excellence. Should Israel desist and allow
those terrorists to murder Jewish children, THAT
would be a step forward towards peace, part of the
battle AGAINST racism.

The reality of course is quite different. Racism is
indeed a crucial and central part of the Middle East
process. But it is the anti-Jewish racism of Israel's
Caring Left, the same people who oppose each and
every act of self-defense by Israel and rationalize
and excuse each and every manifestation of Arab Nazism.
Who believe that every act of Arab savagery needs to
be rewarded with Israeli concessions. It is this
anti-Jewish racism that explains the blood union and
alliance between Arab fascism and Jewish leftism.
It is the new Axis of the Middle East.

4. You know how the traditional definition of chutzpah
is when someone murders his parents and then asks for
mercy from the court on grounds that he is an orphan?

Well, we have a NEW definition. For the past year
and a half the PLO has refused to agree to the
semi-lemming Oslo Lite condition laid down by the
Sharon government and opposed by Shimon Peres
requiring there to be a seven day period of no
atrocities by the Palestinians before resuming
appeasement talks.

Now the same PLO wants SHARON to refrain from
any retaliation for 10 days after every terrorist
atrocity, during which he should sit and wait to see
if the PLO will arrest the perps. As if there is any
question of whether it will or of whether the PLO
itself is the perp.

You think the fact that the world has a 3 day
memory regarding Arab atrocities committed against
Israel might have something to do with this new idea
already being endorsed by the Israeli Caring Left?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

     6. QUOTES TO NOTE

“It is the duty of leaders in the Jewish state to
raise their voices when they detect the smell
of Hitler. You need neither strategy nor tactics
         —you must tell the truth”

F.M. Shimon Peres referring to Iran, and responding to the
statement by Iran’s Defense Minister who vowed that “Teheran
would respond to a future military attack by Israel by
unleashing retaliation that was beyond the wildest dreams
of Israeli leaders”. (Ha’aretz, Feb. 6)

                ------------------------

“The Prophet Muhammad always defended the right of
the Muslim woman to fight in a holy war.”

Sheikh Hassan Yussef, a senior Hamas official in the
West Bank, on the Palestinian woman who set off explosives
on January 27 in downtown Jerusalem, killing an elderly man
and dozens of others.

THE ROLLING HORIZON INTO THE COMING WAR
Observe the "Rolling Horizon" of war much as the earth turns
and the sun comes slowly into view. The Arabs have spent
most of their dollars on building vast weapons' stockpiles.
With the Billions, perhaps Trillions of dollars spent on war
after war, these primitive nations could have educated their
people and made their lands into places to be admired.
Instead, they chose war, killing more than 25,000 Jews
since 1948 and now want the land restored to them that
they gambled away even as they yet pledge the total
destruction of Israel.

NO ROOM FOR ARAFATISTAN IN MIDDLE EAST
Leave it to Powell, the weak link in the war on terrorism,
to resurrect U.S. support for what former Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls "Arafatistan."
Everything that's happened since the Oslo Accords
demonstrates that a Palestinian state would lead to the
demise of the Jewish state.
