How are you and Mike doing? All A-1 okey dokey?
Texas is having the current problem for a number of different reasons.
I've been researching the causes and as far as I can tell the main
culprits are uninsulated gas pipe lines and frozen water mains knocking
gas fired electric generating plants off line. The wind farms also have
a serious problem when there is an ice storm for ice building up on the
blades makes them vibrate which triggers an automatic shutdown. The
blades are not heated which is quite feasible - like the grid of heating
wires in the rear windows of cars which will melt any snow that builds
up on them. The cost of retrofitting electric heating into the blades is
prohibitive for it would require dismounting the blades from the
turbine. However wind farms are just a small part of the problem. They
were expected to contribute 10% to the grid but half are off line. In
the summer wind farms contribute a healthy 27% of the electricity to the
grid.
I don't see how politics comes into it. Politicians come and go. You
have a tendancy to politicize everything. The issue here is problems
with the infrastructure, not Rick Perry (is he back in Texas?) or the
guy in the wheelchair.
