The food was truly disgusting. The blandest most tasteless aspects of
county cooking. Think liver covered with breakfast gravy. I suspect that
the menu was a provocation on Eddie's part. We didn't realize it back
then but Eddie Wilson is an Austin treasure.
Eddie has always been in full blowhard mode so far as my poisonal
experience goes. Cissi Alex used to take me to Eddie's office in the
'Dillo from time to time back in the day. Cissi had a jewelry bench
setup at the 'Dillo on and off. As visiting bands kinda sorta laid a bit
of their blow on Eddie, his stash was one toke mindblow.
After Eddie bankrupted the 'Dillo - do you remember the cute radio ads
of the new 'Dillo: "Yes, Eddie, there is life after the 'Dillo" -
Fletcher suggested he cook for and run a small Mexican bar on Sabine
between 6th & 7th. Fletcher was renting the joint for ~$100 a week with
the notion of running it as a private club - everyone pay $15 a month to
be a member - Fletcher's crowd included such as Dorothy Browne,
Claudette, Billy Lee Bramer, Peggy Underwood, etc. - but nobody would
pony up the money. How and why Fletcher and Lopez took over the joint I
do not know. Wait a minute. I remember. Fletcher was married to Libby
who was making BIG BUX schlepping real-estate. Fletcher was a salesman
at a downtown artstore which closed down so he needed something to do.
I could go on like this all afternoon. Sounds like a Grandpa Simpson
anecdote. "So I tied an onion to my belt . . ."
