[AGL] AGL ghetto list still extant...

Apparently everyone subscribed here is also subscribed to Fontaine's
doppelganger maillist, except for me and Susan Todd Kramer, a list
creatively named ghetto2, created if memory serves by a quondam
subscriber whose name I forget who worked from a state agency and lived
in Houston and then up and died. If memory serves Simmons had a hate
Mike snit at that time or maybe it was the Houston gent and Simmons and
the Houston gent and a third, possibly Fontaine, contracted with
Pair.com for your basic cheap FTP account which gives you some space in
one of their servers, 100 mailbox addresses, and 1 maillist. If you want
an Internet presence, you pay every year for the domain name, once $35 a
year, now ~$13 a year. Simmons way back and Travis Rivers up and opted
for a Austin Ghetto website and the former got stuck with having paid
the $35 and Travis never coming up with the money (surprise!). And Karen
learnt some basic html coding and she or Fontaine or both paid for it
for a few years. Unfortunately, I cannot find any trace of it saved at
Wayback Machine. Anyone knowing its exact URL will likely find an
instance of it in the WaybackMachine archives. Karen, what was the exact
address of our lost website? It should be right there in WaybackMachine,
and it is easily resusitated. Its ongoing costs would be $25 a year, if
hosted by Pair.com, from my FTP account.
On a related subject, I attach a screen grab of the beginning of a very
amusing review of 3 books on the phenomenon of social media like Facebook.
The link to the review is

Parcipating in a maillist is easy if your just writing words. To attach
a picture to the email is about at the edge of the average woman's
competence. To code in a video clip that starts when the email is opened
is tricky tricky tricky. So Facebook and other social media do it for
their users. Of course to monetize their efforts their only business
plan is to mine their subscribers' every buying preference/prejudice and
sell it to advertisers. The George Carlin rule is that if you push the
grocery wagon around the store, you're working for them. But everyone
does that. It's a trade-off. If you're going to use Google search than
you will see many ads on various webpages for stuff you, Mr Google user,
have researched the previous week. All the major news sites contract
with Google to place your personally tailored wish list. Google pays
them for doing it. If you don't want to see the ads, you can, i believe,
instruct Google not to use your personal data. Good luck with that!
Besides, Google has the best search engine. As for Facebook, my poisonal
objection is aesthetic, so I won't subscribe to it although wife Madelon
does.
But email writing and reading them has kinda gone out. The with-it
millenial of whom I am not depends on texting and Facebook. Enjoy!
