We arrived on Thursday and had lunch at the Reef--met Josh, a friend of Lorelei's from art school who docks his magnificent sail boat there. He told us about an art opening on Friday at Sweeties (which we made.)I got in touch with Travis Rivers and he invited us to lunch on Friday at the Ferry Building oyster bar. Fabulous. He is a regular and got the very best table looking out at the Bay Bridge, watching the ferries come and go. He is quite the raconteur and told us much of the history of SF as well as the ballroom where the wedding reception was to be held--the occasion for the trip.We attended the magnificent wedding on Saturday. Everyone commented on how nice the ladies from Texas looked in their finery. But, darn it all, the camera/phone was all but dead and I was unable to take or send photos. I'll have some photos of us coming from other photographers by email, but I'm sure it will take a while. The wedding ceremony was held at the Swedenborgian Church at 2100 Lyon Street. The Mother-of-the-Bride told me that the family was 1%-ers with a ten million dollar mansion in Pacific Heights. She is very happy for her daughter to have landed this SF scion. She was a professional in the music industry when they were dating, successful enough to have bought her own house. She has degrees from UT.The reception was at the Julia Howell Ballroom, named for the first female architect to have graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris. According to Travis she is said to have designed the Hearst mansion and many other structures in SF. You can imagine the grandeur of it. One of the guests at our table, a doctor, told us that his high school was also designed by her. The guests were professionals, all handsome with good looking partners dressed to the nine's.
One of the bride's friends from Austin came to SF for the wedding but she didn't show up for the reception--h'ordervs, drinks, dinner with fine wines and dancing. She was one of the guests at our table whose place card seating spot curiously remained empty. She was staying at the Omni right across the street from the Julia Howell Ballroom. This morning we heard that unfortunately the woman had attempted suicide while it was going on and is the hospital in intensive care. Her mother is flying in to be with her. Such an incredibly sad end note for the bride and groom's special day. That was just our first three days! We are here for another six days but it is sure to be anticlimactic after all the events of the first three.Best,Frances
