Oh, I don't think Mother was too worried about exact dates. After having
talked about the 1600 era ancestor who talked back to the puritans, and the
one in the late 1700's who threw the snowball at the brit soldier, she said
that Sam Maverick showed up in Texas in 1630 - she meant 1830 of course. I
suspect that Feldman didn't expect the story about the presidents-nor about
the backpacking around and meeting all those nice men.
Had he pursued the president stories, he'd have heard the one about Mr.
Roosevelt giving his dessert (a beautiful bon-bon, I believe) to a nine year
old Terrelita who simply walked up to him at the end of a dinner party to
say hello. She told me that she and my grandmother were not even invited,
and were only there to pick up my grampa. There was little or no evidence of
Secret service back then.
She told me she was aware of the significance of the gift and swore never to
put her lips upon said bon-bon. She broke her vow later that evening at
home.
