[AGL] the raw Raw Deal

Wayne Oakes took many of the Raw Deal photos; there
was an album or 2 of them at the bar to look at. The
interior shot may have been taken by Wayne.

My roommate claims the gent in the center of the
interior picture is Roger Baker. Anybody?

The photo of the exterior shows the shoeshine
stand to which one would repair for a breath of
fresh (night) air and to smoke a joint. Fletcher
used to complain that the next morning he had
to sweep up all the dope butts on the sidewalk.
And he said he was specially gravelled because Sabine
St. was the shortcut for patrol cars returning to
police headquarters on 7th street and what would
they think of him? As they drove by, they couldnt 
fail to see the bar's patrons sitting on the shoeshine 
stand and copping one (to coin a phrase).

i will make it a point to check out the Waterloo
collection. Im guessing in advance that it is Leila 
Vance and Renee Dubose sitting next to Lilly.

as for the literary gifts of the Raw Deal regulars,
ha ha ha. one june friday night, i entered said
dive coming upon Dr. Jack, a delicensed doctor
from California (an Irish style Dr. Nick type who wrote too
many problematic prescriptions). What day is it?
he asked me. I thought a bit and realized that it
was June 16, Bloom's Day. He said 'not a one of 
these literary types had a clue.'  sweet memories!
