thanks Connie for the link.
The Raw Deal my favorite bar, especially Fridays.
As for the cosmogony of the bar I heard it differently, from Fletcher
himself.
According to Fletch, aka The Wizard, he discovered that the Sabine St.
bar was for rent with furnishings and beer license for a derisory sum,
something under $200 a month. His original idea was to get his friends
to contribute $20 a month and run the place as a private bar. This didnt
work out and seeing as Eddie Wilson had recently been fired from being
the manager of the Armadillo World Headquarters and with Eddie needing
something to do, he arranged that Eddie run the place as a bar and
greasy spoon. Which Eddie did with no success. (I dont remember what
Eddie called the place or even if it had a name). Well, Fletcher got fired
from running the Art Supplies department of a paint store (on Burnet Rd?)
because the paint store stopped selling art supplies and Libby suggested
that he take over the Sabine Street bar as his next job. Luckily Libby was
doing great in real estate at that time. Smithum was still married at that
time and his wife (whose name I forget) was a CPA or the like and like
Libby was like Libby in a position to support her man. Smithum being a
less lovable man than Fletcher she eventually left him for more hospitable
shores.
