Mike,
I don't believe you wrote this--but the sentiments expressed are spot on. If we can just get rid of the losing-cabal heading up the Democratic Party perhaps we can get back to the politics of meritocracy--the idea that the role of government is to do the best for most of the people, most of the time.
The religious right sees it as something evil, something that needs to be destroyed or, failing that, taken over. The faith-based-insititutions want their share of the revenue--they see government in their hands as a means of control. Period.
The tumble down I fear is global warming and the melting of the ice caps. Once in pre-history the shoreline ran right through the middle of Texas, the fossils remain today.
That's the one I fear coming back in my lifetime.
The Bush regime lowered the bar for the not-so-compassionate antithesis of conservationalism, calling it compassionate conservatism. Brute force rules, nothing else matters, let's hear it for the arms industry, the oil industry and everything that sucks off it.
Ike may soon be back in spirit to wash away refineries and those who build in the path of hurricanes--filled with hurricane hubris, Hope(TM) and Change(TM)notwithstanding.
Best,
Frances

President Palin there will never be.
McCain is going to win easily. But he's a tough
old bird and will last the 4 years (maybe).
If he retires in 2012, Palin will run and lose
to a Dem.
Palin communicates straight to the
subconscious of the great American electorate.
This is Archie Bunker land. Mencken used to
go on and on about the boobitude of Joe and Mary
Sixpack and that was in the 20s under Hoover
and Coolidge. So it was and so it will ever be.
How clever of McCain and his advisors to pick
her!
We are now living in the early years of
the long goingdown of the American Empire
which finds itself engaged in endless unwinable
wars much like the Roman Empire. The latter
empire took a long time to tumble so at our age we
have the good luck to be at the beginning of
the untergang of the empire we lived our life
in.
Have a drink!
