we woke up around midnight smelling smoke.

i got dressed and walked around this apt house.
a coon ran into the alley, another peered at me
with shiny eyes before disappearing back into
a sewer. 

later a norther blew in

some years ago one could smell the smoke
from fires burning in Mexico
